    ~ Sam ~

so very sorry he sure was a very beautiful boy. winning races in heaven
  5. maybe it isn't food so you need to find a toy, something special that he might like, something that makes a noise or a special tug toy or a teddy with a squeak. Not all dogs are food motivated, most are but those that aren't need a high value reward, just special for training days, not for regular use. Have a look around an agility/obedience comp and you will see all sorts of stuff used as reward.
  6. Hi again Scat the xrays belong to you you paid for them they are yours go and get them then you can take to another vet initially for a second opinion. The other vet may decide that the xrays are not well positioned for reading. Speaking to my friend yesterday she told me that her xrays were always sent over east for reading, that the guy who was noted with the best diagnostic reading skills in WA was now retired and her confidence was not high. You need a radiologist to read the xrays... suggestions anyone as to where scat can send them.? Or take them to another vet as I suggested and ask that they be read by a radiologist.
  7. isn't research normally available to everyone in the animal health world? It is in human medicine. Immediately. This is just a general interest question as I was surprised that you would think that other trials would need to be used if yours are conclusive. scrap all that just looked at the website, sorry
  8. Hi scat my girl is 13 and she is a golden retriever. Good luck with your dog
  9. oh sweetie I am sending you masses and masses of hugs :D ;) such a lucky girl to have a wonderful loving family
  10. what standard is your grade one? then I can tell you or give you a guesstimate. Does it really matter how long just as long as you are enjoying yourselves? Are you with a club? If not join one cos you will get masses of support from others who are also interested in trialing.
  11. I never vary Ruskys diet as she vomits if anything with additives or food colouring is included so what she can have she has regularly like chicken carcas, marrow bones fruit and vegies. I get the carcas and bones from same source. I thought it was humidity too which we don't get too often over here but this summer has been very humid, then she got the hot spots last week and it is cool. :p I will try your method next time, this huge latest one is healing nicely but it affected her tail wag, so sad.
  12. I rinse Rusky with bicarb of soda, cools and heals. I thought this latest one was something worse like an allergy or something, it is so huge. Has responded well to the bicarb then I put a bit of that over the counter cortisone I think .2%, it is getting better. Horrid things.
  13. there have been lots of posts about this condition. I did a search for you and hope this works Hip dyslpaysia threads My old girl has had dysplasia all her life and it looked pretty bad. I reduced her protein intake, then gave chicken not beef. I took her swimming every day, I kept her lean and well excercised as she got older and I found some use for vitamin C. I have no idea if that did any good but I read about it and so tried it. She has done well and has not had surgery. If you have a bilateral hip dysplaysia you must understand that the operations on both hips will need to be repeated maybe 3 times in the dogs life. Get your dog as healthy and well as it can be and hold off on the surgery for a while. Also get more than one opinion, where is your vet? which suburb? sorry edited to add I give her glucosamine now, she has one, I have one... we pill pop together. :D
  14. I would not and will not buy any products which have companies which use any animal testing. I am speaking of non life threatening investigations. I am a realist and understand that certain animal testing is needed to develop some life threatening treatments. I wonder if people realise that keyhole surgery is first performed on poor unsuspecting piggies, medial profession do not use human guinea pigs anymore for practice. I would volunteer if I were in that position but now even that is impossible so the piggies get their bits removed. I think it is ridiculous to test dog food on lab animals. I will answer the question I asked of Cordelia. If I were approached by a dog food company and they said they wanted to take a blood sample then feed my dog on 'good dog' for one week then do another blood sample. I would ask why? I am asking why they need to use lab animals to develop a product. you are mistaken Koza but the life of a lab animal at uni can be ruddy disgusting, they still use primate testing at most universities. do not think that the fact that a uni might be used makes it somehow sensitive and acceptable.sorry I have gone off topic I do that sometimes...
  15. check out this site too click and treat it is an interesting and fun way to train, good luck.
  16. ? I think you might be on the wrong thread maybe. This is about Iams Eukanuba animal testing not about the quality or requirements of dry food. There is a thread going about that
  17. Cordilia you have this as your signature, I will answer you.. I will speak up for those who can't. I guess we will agree to disagree. I don't waste time trying to convert those who have already made up their minds, no point. I do think it is a low slung shot to show that 6 months of Iams and suggest that clouded Cordelias judgement. If I were an independant rescue I would take what I could for the dogs from wherever I could. I wouldn't give a rats if Codelia fed all her dogs on Iams for free for ever, the two are completely separate.
  18. well Dru, Cordelia, Wizs and others it is obviously acceptable to you that animals are kept like this the whole of their lives. It is not acceptable to me. It is acceptable to you too that vivisection was admitted to 2003 then they moved the lab. I don't think 2003 is such a long time ago, obviously you do. I do not think there is any reason for any dog to be kept in a lab to test ruddy dog food. I do not support companies who use this practice. I will speak up at every opportunity I do what I am able to. I was active when young, I am old now, but I still have a voice. I am sad that you find it so funny that you have little men rolling around laughing, that you laugh at the lab animals makes me very sad. Would you donate your dog to the lab? why is your dog different to any other dog?
  19. so you are saying you condone animal testing and vivisection on animals? including dogs? that these practices are ok by you? That all you have read is fine? That it is ok for dogs to be subjected to this kind of a life, a long life for the labs for the benefit of your dogs? Well it actually isn't ok by me. All I can say is that I have seen some of their facilities - have you Rusky?
  20. Friskies is Purina isn't your pet the lucky one, and I am very happy that he lives with you and is not still a lab animal Nestlé Purina Petcare Nine beagle dogs were kept in single isolation for 15 weeks, during which time their diets were changed every three weeks. The dogs suffered from diarrhoea in an experiment which has no relevance to improving the care of pet dogs. In addition to the inevitable distress of social isolation, frequently changing dogs' diets can also be stressful as they do not have the opportunity to establish a dietary routine. (Published 2003: Conducted by Veterinary University of Vienna, Austria; Hanover University, Germany; Nestlé Purina PetCare R&D, Nestlé Research Centre, Lausanne, Switzerland)1 Forty-eight labrador retrievers were kept in a laboratory environment for fifteen years (unless death occurred sooner). The dogs had their food intake restricted for the first three years of the study, after which their diet was restricted still further until some animals were being fed just half the amount of food of their litter mates. Dogs were weighed weekly, x-rayed annually, had heart scans, ECGs and blood pressure taken. Once a year the dogs were starved overnight then injected with glucose, before blood samples were taken from their jugular vein five times in two hours. Body weight of feed-restricted dogs was on average 26% lower than the body weight of litter mates. Adult body weights for this group were as low as 22kg; the ideal body weight for Labrador retrievers is up to 34kg. (Published 2002: Conducted by researchers from the Pet Nutrition Research Department, Nestle Purina PetCare Research, St. Louis, USA)2 Eighteen dogs (6 German Shepherds, 6 English Setters and 6 Miniature Schnauzers) were kept in single isolation for 12 weeks and fed either dry or canned dog food. Four dogs either became ill or refused to eat the food offered during the study. (Published 2002: Conducted by Nestle Purina PetCare Company, St Louis, USA)3
