car harness lead flat collar treat bags poo bags toys and lots of pretty clickers of all sorts and styles -
Thank you everyone, you are all so very kind. Erny the poem is so lovely and I am crying again.. I have Cindy here with me now in a lovely jarrah engraved box. I know it is silly but I often hear her claws on the wood floor and I hear her 'speak' I miss her so much. Someone told me to remember the good times, I can't yet, it is too painful, that probably sounds silly too.

Advice And Opinions Wanted On Mastering The Sit/stay
Rusky replied to rdr71's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
baby steps reward for one thing at a time count in seconds by your side till you have a perfect row of 5....... 5 second stays then pivot to just in front till you have a perfect row of 5... 5 second stays reward all the time with praise or food or pats. Increase the time in 5 second then 10 second sessions. always set the dog up to win so if he breaks go back to where the stay was perfect. I mean you may already have a minute so work from that. If you have a minute away at distance then return reward, feed, praise, repeat command and leave for another 10 seconds and so on. -
yes like any training perfect it to stay 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 then 5 seconds extending when each stage is reached. Set your dog up to win so make it easy baby steps. I like your idea

Fantastic Mrs D and a lovely dog too. So long as the dog gets the reinforcers and the timing is right, food, pat, verbal, toy whatever with the clicker combination it will work well. Not all dogs respond to food so you have to find what works for you. My grandfurbaby is responding brilliantly to the clicker I am impressed with the kids for giving it a go. We have all basics with 9 week baby including touching and targeting. Love that clicker I think you must be doing a perfect timing job.

Sweetheart you were so loved I can't write too much my heart is too full. Bye Bye Darling Cindy a loved Golden retriever born 21st April 1993 "Dancingate Dorcas Willow" went to the bridge 6th September 2006. You fought hard to stay with us. I miss you so much.

same as above with praise and reward  hey I have 5 kids and the dogs were always easier to teach anything, they don't care if it is a liver treat or a piece of cheese, kids never would perform for liver treats.

It is the same as teaching retrieve with the added extra of the toy box. Needs to learn the word toy and box teach with food and praise. Instead of give as with the retrieve you the say box and drop or put in box, like all one word, depends if you teach down or drop in basic commands. Also may need another word for box if you are doing obedience trials. Can learn masses of words and be really useful bringing you the phone or finding your keys. If you don't already teach retrieve you just need elements anyway. 'bring me the TOY' good boy cuddles kisses best steak Take to BOX ditto putinbox ditto ( eventually these commands will merge as he will offer the behavour. teach in stages make sure he knows the words first. One step at a time. Hey there is masses at the top on the tricks threads too. Good luck.

New Job And The Dog Is Not Happy...

I was watching the video first not knowing the breed of dog and thought it was a mastiff. Lovely dog, lovely work... thanks for posting

I am so sorry about your puppy They don't all make it even with treatment. If the puppy is 8 weeks presumably the breeders vet gave the last shot, have you contacted them to see if any littermates are sick. I wish I could help you with the money :p I know your heart is breaking, hang in there, thinking of you.

Rspca Investigates Dog Squad's 'cruelty'
Rusky replied to phatdex's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I was fairly sure when this thread was current that WA police do not use Ecollars or prong collars but had to check my facts. They don't and in fact were incredibly impressed with an animal trainer who uses targeting who taught the animal handlers at the zoo so that all animals are easy for the vet to handle that they are rethinking all their training. The do use positive training but do still use check chains on some dogs. Amazing apparently what a gorilla will do for raspberry juice -
yes Goldilocks my old Golden Retriever was like that

Rspca Investigates Dog Squad's 'cruelty'
Rusky replied to phatdex's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
no he doesn't have a criminal record, it wasn't a criminal court was it? From the sounds of the article it was a magistrates court. Innotek sell collars here in WA so if you lived here and took the collar to NSW and didn't know the law it would not make you a criminal, it wouldn't occur to me that something that was used in another state or by the local police would be illegal for me to buy or use. I think the magistrate saw that, there was no intent to commit a crime. I know they can't be used in NSW or Victoria so if I used one I would be breaking the law. Breaking the law is up to the individual. don't know but keep us informed. I am still wondering if the article alerted the law to the use by the police. -

no it wasn't dismissed, it was proven but the case was dismissed without penalty. There is a huge difference in the wording and what you may have understood from the wording. If you are in NSW and use an ecollar you are breaking the law. I gather from the article that the police also are breaking the law as they do not have any exemption. It is my guess that the doberman case highlighted the police situation. Will be interesting to see the outcome, hope you NSW people keep us updated. -
you need to be guided by your breeder with the feeding programme. Adult dogs when not working don't eat a whole lot, don't need to eat a whole lot. We give ours a mixture of food including dry, bones, vegetables and sometimes pasta or rice but not often. My mal loves apples and will steal them if she has a chance but she gets to share an apple with me sometimes. Marrow bones are left whole, I have a butcher, they are not sliced. In the summer I give Rusky my special frozen bones and she has a tin of sardines a week. I sometimes cook fish for her which she loves but no bones at all. Small amounts depending on your dogs level of excercise. I said much the same yesterday please do masses of research, then do some more

Is This Acceptable Behaviour?
Rusky replied to Kirislin's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think exactly as poodlefan does Give her a scenario? the dog can't be boarded, no one can care for it. Tell her that she will lose her dog if she doesn't listen. poor dog. The dog needs immediate attention -
the mind boggles.
