If the dog is scared it needs gently and slowly desensitising, not walked out where it is afraid. It took me a couple of weeks to get my last rescue out of the driveway, soon as she showed fear we turned around, it got better and better till she was a joy both on and off lead, loved to run with other dogs but before would roll on her side and pee at the sight of them... and cry. I have watched the DVD, it is very similar to the book but I wish she was as entertaining as in her seminar. The son does a bit too, it is worth watching... will pm you with more info.

read this article and see if you can follow through. The water is to get instant attention and I wouldn't use that, a squeeky toy will work just as well to stop and get attention and then the treat with the words used in the article. good luck guys stop barking

It would depend on the question. Do you remember the specific questions? We didn't have many questions in Perth probably because the clubs all use positive training as do the therapy and assistance people. I wish there had been more questions from the floor but really everyone wants a nice well mannered dog at home and that is the basis of her work not formal training for any specific need. She announced to us that she was now going to be involved at Battersea and was really looking forward to the challenge. I hope her involvement and testing will result in the fearful dogs who have been treated so badly getting a second chance. Dog breeds have been developed to provide needed traits such as herding, guarding, retrieving and sitting on your lap to keep you warm, plus many others but essentially they are all dogs. I personally don't believe that any breed strays from basic requirements. I really liked her use of the phrase 'multi pedigree' nicer than mutt or mongrel or even bitzer. I have stolen the phrase, I am sure she won't mind.

I went to the Perth seminar The obedience trainers there from the dog clubs, the therapy and assistance trainers and just about the entire audience loved her seminar. I found Jan Fennel to be a wonderful speaker, very funny, very interesting and a dog lover... Jan Fennel actually does not describe herself as a trainer or the 'amichien way' as a training method which is why she does not suggest it be used with aggressive dogs, very sensible, there are fields of experts to deal with aggression. her methods are really 'how to live happiy with your dog' nice manners but it is not a training programme, it is the foundation and if everyone who had a pup behaved as she suggested towards our dogs then life would be wonderful. Regarding her statement about breeds, I know different breeds are different, she was saying "a dog is a dog is a dog" breeds do have differences but they are all dogs and will react to her suggestions in an identical way, it is basic dog communication. I assumed she meant it as in 'a human is a human ' we all have the same needs, food, shelter, family or friends but we are all differnt too. I thought she explained that very well "where would you be right now if you didn't know where your next ,meal was coming from" human or dog... very basic needs. I read one of her books but really she is a fantastic speaker and has an amazing way of helping people understand. I have watched the DVD and her personality does not shine in that either but it is a good DVD for anyone to gain an understanding of dog.

when a dog is excited it is generally playing, without seeing the situation it is difficult to give decent advice but I would never suggest a spray nor would any trainers I know, in fact it would be viewed by all I know as silly, unacceptable and shows the trainers to be inadequate. The spray can easily and quickly have the result which Haven has described They are suggesting a dog be punished for communicating with its own kind, If I were your friend with the spray advice I would quickly seek out another trainer or club.

welcome back Erny ;) and hope the new puppy works out brilliantly, I am taking care of a rescue golden retriever which has been a bit emotional but she has really helped me, I hope I am helping her too. Can't help myself, I just love all dogs ;)

Barking Problem With A Difference
Rusky replied to gsdog2's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am sad that you guys can't see the negativity of your advice. If OP is unable to talk to her neighbours and the neighbours are unable to talk to them then intervention is required to see both sides of the story. mental health team would assist, a community social worker is an excellent idea too. I can simply see a massive degeneration tit for tat situation arising which I find fearful. I have see it all before and it can result in criminal activity if the situation which is very stressful is not handled with kid gloves. exactly I think they both own the problem I was appealing to the OPs good nature to find a better solution by communication. I am very sad about the cat trapping, I know it won't have helped anything at all. -
Barking Problem With A Difference

and has trapping the cat done anything except make them madder and more distressed. Would removing the cat maybe upset the daughter more? I expect that when the dogs bark and she gets upset that the situation inside their house is desperate. Seriously I would contact your mental health team and have a chat, see if they can't intervene on your behalf to work out a mutually acceptable solution. Maybe also contact your GP to see if he can't give you some information about autism and aspergers. I am thinking that I am the only person on this thread who did. -

I think this is so terribly sad as you are describing the total breakdown of community and neighbours. I imagine the family have a great deal more to cope with than you do if their daughter has Aspergers syndrome and maybe this family just needed some neighbourly friendship. You are the resposible ones here, so far as I can see the dogs aren't a problem except that the daughter is terrified of them. This also could be worked on, not with you but with the help of the mental health team. I hate that you trapped the cat because now the whole situation will degenrate, there was some hope before you trapped the cat. I would be steaming if you trapped one of my animals without speaking properly to me about it. I don't understand people anymore, you can ask advice on here from people you in all probability will never meet, don't know you either and yet you are unable to invite your distressed neighbour over for a cuppa and discuss the shocking situation you both find yourselves in. You and your neighbour are equally to blame and the cat and dogs are simply pawns in a neighbourhood battle. -

try making your own liver treats buy ox liver, boil for a few minutes, with oven on lowest setting allow to heat up. Slice your cooling liver as thinly as you can leave in oven till dry but check every now and again and maybe break up a bit more. allow to cool completely and store in a yoghurt container. dogs love home made treats and they are cheap and very easy to dispense. Also I buy polony and cut very small... teeny bits, they throw well as do the liver treats. if you have your dog to hand ( so to speak) you can have mushed up in your left hand with clicker to right when heeling so only using teeny bits. I also buy chicken drumsticks, microwave say a kilo for 10 minutes or till flesh comes off bone, place that on a tray in oven at 180 for 20 minutes or till crispy.. dogs love it.. great stuff with the clicker training

I think bones are major prizes, like 'he who has the most toys wins' I never ever give my dogs or have ever given big chewy bones to dogs together. I always make sure they are private and have space. I am sure that your taking the bone peed him off just as he was saying to the rest of the pack 'look at me, look what i have' I don't think he mistrusts you at all, some dogs are spunky and are always a challenge, he will respect you all the more now you have nipped this in the bud. I would try feeding him separately, do the on lead, wait, look permission routine. I would also give toys and take toys to see if he is really resource guarding or if it was just the bone and the particular situation. If you are at all worried about taking food from him for instance try with a broom handle and stuffed glove attached and throw him food with a 'good boy" when he allows you to take whatever he has. He may be feeling his maturity, maybe the pole peeing is marking. Some dogs can get incredibly distracted by aromas when they are growing up, praise and treat, go back a few steps( in training) and praise and treat again. Find a toy for a reward if you don't already have one and only use that toy for his training reward as it will lose value if it is lying around. Hope I am not teaching grannie to suck eggs here as you always seem totally confident with your lovely dogs. Good luck. BTW you already know that if he does get a bit too much up himself you need to get some personal help in your home. oh and happy birthday Nova

interesting you mention the old dogs SP. My old darling who just went to the bridge never wandered in her life, one afternoon I was called by the ranger that some people several streets away had my dog.. I couldn't understand it. She had slipped out the back past our immediate neighbour who was working on the back wall, into the church carpark behind us, these people saw her, thought she was an escaped dog of a relative, got her home realised she wasnt and called the ranger with her registration details. Her new flash disc I just had engraved was sitting on the bench ( we had recently moved) All this took a total of 10 minutes, imagine if I had removed her collar to put the disc on and that had happened I bought the finders a box of chocolates immediately and thanked them even though they felt guilty for picking her up and driving her off. The scenarios I played in my mind drove me insane, but she was chipped too. I made sure she always had her disc on after that as I realised a little light had gone from her eyes and that she was disorientated. We need to keep a good eye on old dogs because like puppies and beagles they follow their nose.

thanks Raz and Cordelia I just think quite simply that the OP from this and the rescue thread hasn't got a clue about dogs but would like to think they have, actually they don't know a lot about people either JO you pee me off with your silly uneducated twitterings. You couldn't even walk your dog if I remember, came on here looking for magic. Suddenly you are an expert on dog training I can ignore your canine ignorance but you have upset some great people who love their dogs and are desperately searching for them, some for years. So I can't forgive you and I hope that hole you are digging fills with water.

How To Get My Dogs To Love Me?
Rusky replied to daniel83's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
great pics pandii nice to see the dogs getting a cuddle, speaking of cuddles I expect a lot of you will be busy giving skin babies cuddles as we now have school holidays.. off topic? maybe not -
this reminds me of when Rusky was a puppy and we were going out for dinner... we bought son KFC for tea, we left... he called as he had left his KFC on the coffee table and Rusky had eaten it cardboard and all :D then she was sick, not surprised really :p I would keep a clean bench and washed dishes for a couple of weeks while you work on your problem then maybe trekking? turn it around, he has a good nose obviously, make that sniff work.

I don't know Jenny but I am sure she was well met at the bridge by lots of lovely dogs. RIP dear lady and thank you for all you have done for the animals.
