  1. If you are looking at Retrievers the sometimes overlooked Curly Coated Retriever would be worth a look too. The CCR's have a seasonal coat shed but the rest of the time are low shedding and are said to be "wash and go' grooming wise with a tidy up of straggly bits when needed. Always a good idea to consider what level of grooming and shedding you can live with;that will narrow down your list .
  2. My friend has a Smooth Collie ;he grew up with her 3 girls the youngest girl was 5 when they got him.She says he has been a great family pet.
  3. Cocker Spaniel or a Beagle;both great with kids.It is great that you are doing research into the right breed for you.It does take time but is well worth the wait to find the perfect fit. Oh and you must post pictures when you get your puppy.Best wishes to you..
  4. My Thomas cat thinks he is a dog so i will register him as a Pure bred Shitzabugapoolier..
  5. It can work if you have plenty of time to be with the dog and will do twice a day outings for exercise training and play time. I had a neighbour with 2 Weimaraners in a unit with a tiny court yard.He made it work by putting the time in to keep them happy. I think a Hungarian Vizsla may suit your situation .Talk to some breeders; they will help to find the right one for you. If the pups have been raised around cats and other pets that would be a bonus. Make sure you teach good recall;some formal training would be good idea and get the dog used to meeting other dogs and cats. efs
  6. Perhaps also speak to some one who has experience with similar dogs.Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue Australia are on Facebook. They have crosses as well. It may help to get some advise from them.
  7. Could it be the dog is showing normal protective behavior and you are reading it as aggression. IMO the shelter did not match the dog to the right home as i do not think you are able to manage a large protective breed of dog. Did you get a copy of the assessment done at the shelter? Rule number one when adopting any dog is to research the breed well ;you should have read up on Mastiffs and Ridgebacks as the dog would show a mix of temperaments from both these breeds then you would have some idea about what is normal behavior and if you can manage that. I had a large cross breed from a shelter who was friendly to all but i would never have left her alone with strangers. When we had visitors she was kept secure and introduced with supervision. No one here can say if the dog is able to be rehomed or not ;only a professional assessor can advise you if the dog would be suited to a home that is experienced confident and responsible with owning such a dog.If the advise is that dog is not suitable to be rehomed then you must be brave and responsible enough to PTS. You can get the Vet to visit your home it may be easier for you and the dog.
  8. It has been over 5 years since Pippa died and i have dreams that she is lost and i go out looking for her. One dream she was at an animal shelter -that is where i got her - but when i arrived there they said i was too late and she was in another home.. Mostly in dreams i go from place to place calling her.;once she came to me and i was so happy but then woke up and was upset for days after...

  10. A vote here for Australian terriers ,very adaptable breed;.good with kids and seniors...
  11. Agree;... After one large litter of pups with all the work and mess they cause; may make her rethink her plans to continue breeding more..
  12. Perhaps a Papillon;,still tiny bones but if you supervise around the big dogs and they are gentle with littlies it would work.. Australian Terriers are robust little dogs ..
  13. ...because their ancestors where French..
  14. When i had my GSP i also had a bird aviary and cages in the laundry where my dog slept. She had been around them from 12 weeks of age and had little interest in them and also loved our cat.She would chase other cats out of our yard . A neighbours Vizsla escaped when the latch broke on his gate and i had him for the day until his owner was able to come and take him home. When i took him out to toilet he made a dash strait for the bird room and was determined to get to them. I had to put him on a leash outside with me but he still just wanted to get to the birds. Not sure if all Visla would be like this ,there may be some who live with birds and i am sure many would be fine if brought up with cats .
  15. Try Australian Working Dog Rescue.. http://www.workingdo...urtesy-listing/
  16. German Shorthaired Pointer..However a Weimaraner may suit you too.Visit some breeders and dog shows, spend time with the breeders adult dogs and ask lots of questions. Remember every dog is an individual and a good breeder will be able to advise which pup in a litter would be the best match for you.. Tapua you type faster than me.
