  1. To help with leash pulling I found freezing for 10 seconds as soon as the leash tightens to be effective. You don't walk very far for a few weeks but it worked where everything else failed for me.
  2. Just thought I'd mention if you get a Billdog just give your credit card to your vet who will be delighted with his new Porsche. Last hairy mutt made do with about $500 a year until his senior years when arthritis treatment probably took that up to about $1500 a year. In 18 months the Billdog has spent more than that and about to embark on a new relationship building round of vet work......but darn he's gorgeous.
  3. Thanks Gertrude, it's taken 6 years but we nearly have the privet beaten and are starting to replant. It's very exciting to think the trees I'm putting in will outlive me and be home to generations if birds.
  4. My son was out jogging, as he ran past a guy with two dogs the one lunged and got him on the stomach. Ripped his shirt and broke skin, owner looked, shrugged and walked on. I've kicked myself for not doing anything, my son is 2m tall, what if it does it to a young child. How will you feel if you hear that next time a young girl is scarred for life? Maybe he'll keep it muzzled from now but might be worth reporting to council, it may not be the first time this has happened and at least there will be a history of the dog.
  5. Love it,Happy Birthday salt. This is probably the only photo I'm going to get of Jake with a dog friend.
  6. Looking at my couch pooch and wondering how it is he shares any genes with a dog like that. Love the working dog stories.
  7. Dog barking can be hard to pinpoint so she could be getting your dog confused with someone else's. Id go with the boarding for a few days and see what she says. Probably cheaper than getting the ombudsman involved.
  8. What an interesting looking dog. If you get 5c for every time you get asked her breeding you're going to be rich.
  9. Yea my reactive bulldog is a pitbull too, and they're going to call council because its illegal in NSW. Go for your life....
  10. Jake come, he's pretty good and I've been working on a long leash to get a quicker response. I can call him off chasing a turkey, he will stop from running to the fence to fight the neighbours dog. I think he sets me up for that though because he always gets treats for coming from a potential dog interaction. Training works both ways with us.
  11. Very sad but you tried. I wish you strength.
  12. I have huge respect for anyone in rescue, or police or any of the services that clean up the mess made by humans. I think I'd alternate between crying and cynicism. If she needs to vent, go for it.
  13. Thanks guys. he has to go back next week. He has a small ulcerated patch that came from nowhere. We had a good interaction with a swf today. It wandered out of its house and wanted to say hello. No barking just determined to follow us. Jake did the initial banshee thing but I got the peanut butter out and he calmed down. This tiny dog didn't care at all. It's owned came out and was lovely, I think because she was calm and the dog was unphased we stood chatting about three meters away from each other and I was able to take away the peanut butter and tell him to look calmly. think I'll be stalking that house now! Win some, lose some hey?
  14. Very good, I used to do my old man and I know getting it that neat is not easily achieved.
  15. We had the vet appointment from hell yesterday. Normally I try be the last appointment before surgery or end of the day but he had to be fasted in case they needed to biopsy a thing in his face. When I walked in to announce I was bringing naughty Jake I realized I just couldn't. There were about 10 dogs waiting and three medium large dogs were being allowed to roam on the ends of their leashes and it was chaos. Plan B was to have the vet come to the car so I opened the wagon doors and sat in the back with him. A lady parked next to us and when I said "oh you might want to get your dog out the other side mines not good with other dogs," she replied "mine's fine , he loves everyone," opened the door nearest me and let out her spaniel type dog leashless. Of course it dashed over to us and lots of chaos happened. Jake had had no water since midnight and it was hot and he was overheating so I was about to wrap it up when the vet turned up. Since he was now in distress and way beyond examining or sedating she just gave us a script for different antibiotics. I couldn't get him to drink so I took him to the bush path nearby and put him in a puddle in the creek and once he cooled down he had some water and I took him for a bushwalk to try end the whole scenario on a positive note. I guess the good thing is the vet won't be so blasé about his reactivity now she's seen him misbehave but I'm so sad because he's had such a good history there and I'm hoping it doesn't sour the vet experience for him.
  16. Excellent, actually in my attempts to encourage play behaviour in my dog I've found the stick thing quite fun.
  17. Sasha has a lovely nose. I'm sorry you're missing Cookie and Oreo. Now you can help some more huskies.
  18. Don't worry it's a lovely happy crying story! Thanks for posting.
  19. Part of my dogs sep anx remedy is to go thank him for barking, obviously check it out and then supervise a 'that's ok we're going to leave that ' retreat. It's been surprisingly effective, after a very short time he has learned to bark once and then come to tell me. Now if I could just get my neighbours to do the same. I've watched the dog stand barking at him while he mows the lawn for an hour, he doesn't hear it at all.
  20. Ha my Vizla breeder friend tattoos her dogs ears....6 degrees of separation maybe. Good on you, she's a lucky girl. Makes my blood go cold thinking of what could have happened.
  21. Oh he might be the man that told me my bulldog couldn't be a bulldog(ok he is a cross) because you can't train bulldogs to walk on a leash. The breeder told him so.
