  1. If you find a breed that does the housework please let me know! My tibbie x 'helped' me do a sudoku last night though..... He sat next to me staring at it and pawed the page if I hadn't written in a while....maybe because he knew the answers.....or maybe because he was enjoying trying to steal the pencil every time I used it ; p It's this gentle playfulness that makes me give them the thumbs up!
  2. The uk have free bags on the doggy bins as well.... :)
  3. We came the other way round. We own 2 Tibetan Spaniels who behave exactly like Helen & Miki described by ESCS. This breed was bred for centuries to be close companion dogs in the monasteries of Tibet. So they're lovely, easy mainly indoor dogs. We wanted a puss-cat to fit in with the Tibs. Got help from the UQ Adoption Program to pick one, Sarah. The staff tested all the cats with dogs... and Sarah came out as happy to have a dog around. Sarah gets on great with our Tibbies....but absolutely loves the playful Tibbie next door, Lily. They have happy chases around the house (doesn't matter who is chasing who)... the games end with a big kiss. Maybe you could look at adopting an adult of whatever breed you finally prefer? And you could specially look for one who already lives happily around a cat. Also it'd be evident if it was a barker or not. As others have said, that's a critical issue in apartment living. But, then, you might prefer to start with a puppy & train from the beginning. Hee hee - you got in before me! ; P I was about to say something very similar! I have a tibbie x (but he looks/acts very much like a tib). This has been my first encounter with them and I am now a paid up member of the fan club! My little man is extremely adaptable - quite happy to join me on runs or on the sofa, cuddles or play wrestling. My (ex-marine) mans man of a partner loves him to bits.....they really aren't just 'fluffy little dogs' ; P Now I think you want a puppy (right?) and this little man may not be right, but I have to share the link: http://www.petrescue.com.au/view/157931 I've been 'watching' this guy for a while, love his 'smile' :)
  4. That makes me feel sick The poor owner and the poor dog, I hope it was quick and she wasn't in distress/pain
  5. How did the dog get in there?! Before the plates in anticipation?! Lol I wouldn't let mine lick the plates, for one as it has been mentioned I know what else they lick/ put in their mouths! Also they know the bowls their food goes in, I don't want them thinking our food is up for grabs. We have got them to the point where we can leave a plate of food in their reach and they won't touch it, even if we leave the room. If they were allowed leftovers off plates I don't think that would be the case anymore!
  6. Well you can't trust those door stops.....they are tricksy
  7. the dog must have been so bored! That dog was high on teddy chewing - had to be chased and tackled to the ground! I think these are hilarious, my two would have a huge list of the strange things they do ; p Whilst they don't (touch wood!) tend to chew things or anything, one of mine is a kleptomaniac. Any clothes or anything he can carry gets swiped (literally will creep in the room watching you, swipe, zoom, gone!) and gently placed in his bed. He sign would read 'I'm a hoarder' By the way this includes feathers, big leaves, anything he finds and thinks is a 'treasure' My girl on the other hand pretends to be dead to get out of doing things, in the past (when she was new to us) she faked a limp so she didn't have to run. We rushed her straight to the vet who figured that one out really quick as she forgot which leg to limp with and swapped, then ran after a treat he threw. Weirdly he laughed and said he'd seen this before?! Oh and she also comes over for a belly rub, farts then gets up and walks away like 'phew, thanks for helping with that one.....yeah I'm leaving your stinky chair now.....'
  8. Oh that poor bub Crossing everything. Don't mean to sound dumb, but some pounds have drop of chutes? I thought they had pens?!
  9. Bha hahahha!! "pretzel cross?" Jarrah yogi "ahh yes"
  10. Just checked out the site - stunning! Roxie at 9 weeks - what a little cutie :)
  11. Agree with above - no demand no breeding (obv one unfortunate unwanted generation would probably suffer but to save thousands of future pups) I get the money arguement a lot and usually get attacked for my reply - if you can't afford the pup/adoption fee, then you can't afford to keep a dog. I'm not some snob and have in fact just gone a long, long time, first where I couldn't afford a dog (straight out of Uni) then not settled (unfair to drag a dog around and potentially not be able to have it in rental homes). It sucks but you have to consider what is best for the dogs. In the meantime I looked after family/friends dogs and volunteered.
  12. As someone who adopted a reactive, completely unsocialised dog, I can tell you taking them to a dog park would been extremely detrimental for the dog, and incredibly rude and stupid for the other dogs at the park. We joined a reactive rover class and trained on lead. First greetings were on lead and very gradually worked on off lead. These first off lead sessions we walked around a park (no stopping) and watched my dogs (and others) body language intently so we could pre-empt any issues and gently remove her from the situation. Luckily she wasn't aggressive, just had no manners, which I wanted to protect others dogs from. It has been a long road, training every day but we got there. If a dog walker had done with her what you suggest it would have set her further back. Also if I was at a dog park and you turned up with a DA dog and let them loose (muzzle or not) I would report you. Maybe you should invest in some dog behaviour training to assist your current profession before innocent dogs (both DA and the dog park attendees) get hurt.
  13. Breed you would love to own 'before you kick the bucket' (die!) If (when) I ever have the space (acres and acres lol) I would love a Tibetan mastiff :) Would also love a dobe......and for that matter about 100 other breeds. All living with my heart dogs tibbie and JRT/ foxy type cross pups :)
  14. Yay! Very happy for you :) Yep, lots of pics :) What type of Mastiff? (sorry if a stupid question, I'm not mastiff savy at all!)
  15. This is exactly what I was going to say! A lot of people bow out after a first bad experience, a mentor like you could be invaluable :)
  16. Lol, let's not make this into a GSD are bad thread ; p Sadly some people are set in their ways Also if it was obedience class I bet they were all on leads anyway! Good on Diesel :)
  17. I've never been upset at having a dog called old, like others I have a soft spot for old grey faces :) Now when I'm told that my dog must be aggressive/yappy/not safe in public/not a real dog (I've had a lot of very different breeds lol) due purely to its breed, not its behaviour - then im offended.
  18. Urgh, what an idiot. Of course if a dog had turned around and nipped after being taunted I'm sure the mum would have something different to say. It's just rude, you were in the right and that's what counts. Also, why pick the dog beach if she didn't have a dog with her?! Lol
  19. Bahahahaha - not Fames' best angle haha!!
  20. I'd suggest that you visit a local (reliable) shelter and see if they have a dog that matches on temperament (if you only want a compatible dog rather than a certain breed) Maybe try fostering the dog and see how it goes? If you get an adult dog you will be able to match the dogs energy levels and personalities. We let our dog 'choose' her 'brother' and it has worked out perfectly :)
  21. Isn't it the same with some ridgeback breeders? Some pups are born ridge less and these are culled. I totally agree that there would be buyers not looking for show quality who would purchase these pups as pets.
  22. My GSDs could swim and loved it, staffy.......not so much lol! His back end would sink and we'd have to help him in! My JRT/Foxy cross is not a fan of the water, neither is my Tibetan x, however they love coming on the kayaks with us :) My JRT x once chased a dragonfly right off the kayak and went straight down, she popped up quick enough so we could pull her out but she was very sheepish for a while......
