  1. They have cool mats at Kmart & Petbarn. Also online. I think My Pet Warehouse sells them. Otherwise you can soak a towel, fold it up in a plastic bag and freeze it. Then you take it out & unfold it. Could help. Might be a bit leaky though.
  2. Wings, feet or drumsticks in our house. I find they work best for our dogs. For some reason, both chicken and turkey necks won't settle in Scrappi's stomach even if he chewed it reasonably thoroughly. They cause him to throw up yellow bile several hours after dinner. So we don't give them for that reason, but if your dog is fine with them and they chew them well then necks are ok. Preferably turkey as they are a lot bigger and less likely to be gulped.
  3. Ohh cool I have seen Jumbaar before, I will have a look at that. We won't be needing titres for a while though as they only just got vaccinated about a month ago.
  4. Where do you get titres done? How much does it cost too? Since we live close-ish by I might have a look into it. Not sure if my small local vet does them and if she did it would cost more than vaccines for sure.
  5. Scrappi flew to us as a 12wk old from WA via Australian Air Express. Went well, I can't remember the price but it was a discount because it was part of the adoption fee. If I needed to fly a dog again I would consider them. I thought it was Jet Pets until I just double checked, Jet Pets also looks really good.
  6. Hello everyone, Hope this is okay to post! Thought I would share this video for anyone interested. Rachel Fusaro is a lady who lives in Texas and makes youtube videos about what it is like to foster dogs basically, and to spread awareness for fostering/rescuing. She is doing a challenge called "Scoop For Subscribe" where she is adding 1 cup of dog food to a tub for every subscriber she gets. When the bin is full she will donate it to a rescue who needs it most. Rachel asked this to be shared with as many people as we could. So if you are interested, you can subscribe to her youtube channel (which is free for anyone that doesn't know Youtube) and she will donate a meal to a rescue. If anyone else has a rescue/dog related Youtube channel, facebook, instagram, twitter or whatever else, you could run your own version of the challenge too Here's the link: New Year Challenge For Puppies - Rachel Fusaro As of today she is up to 470
  7. Yay I saw her latest video today, she's up to 470! I didn't know if I was allowed to put it in General but I will post there too.
  8. Same with nail clipping and paw handling!!
  9. Yes... This is true. Depending on the adult dog it can either be easier or much much harder. If the adult dog has been trained a certain way, or learned certain bad habits, it is much harder to "un-train" them than to just train a pup how you want in the first place. That said though, if you can find a suitable adult dog that doesn't have 1001 issues (unless you are up for that along with being in year 12) then it would be lovely to give an older dog a forever home (everyone wants a puppy so the adult dogs often get left behind). If you decide you want a pup you will of course have to look around at a lot of different breeders to find the one that suits you best and looks after their dogs the best, or if you would rather, there are also young puppies needing to be rescued too. So as Showdog said, puppies you need to put a lot of time and effort and make sure you train them the right way the first time and not let any bad habits take hold, but adult dogs or older puppies will often need training to correct issues. (Our staffy Monty is a shelter dog and he came to us at 6mths and by then had missed out on the most important socialisation period and had made his mind up about certain things (like dogs and being alone) and in turn has needed a lot of work to teach him that being alone is ok, that dogs on walks aren't out to get you and they also don't necessarily want to play, and that no, you cannot eat macadamias/mousetraps/the verandah/3kg of dry kibble from next door/your bed/sticks/poo bags...)
  10. I'm not sure how but there were some pets that had come here I'm pretty sure, obviously no easy task though! Or maybe they went to NZ I can't remember...
  11. That's awesome! So great that Pippin has found a loving home in USA. ❤
  12. Similar situation in Thailand. When our family went to Thailand we got to visit an amazing animal shelter/charity. We went to this beautiful small island in the South called Koh Lanta. It doesn't get too many tourists and it's so lovely there, but because it's a developing country and the island is quite small, a lot of the pets/strays are not desexed and don't have proper health care. There is a charity started by a European lady who saw all the animals in need when she traveled there, and she started Lanta Animal Welfare. It is a cat & dog shelter and vet hospital too. If you are interested have a look on their website, the volunteers try so hard with what they have, and one day I might go and volunteer there too. Of course it could do with a lot of improvement, but it is run entirely by volunteers and funded only by tourists to the island. People can adopt dogs from them and have them flown by flight volunteers (get a free flight!) to the new home! I also had a look at the Bangkok run shelter called something like "Soi Dogs Foundation" which does a much similar thing. That might be something I do in a few years, for hard work you get free accomodation and lots of experience on an AMAZING island where it costs barely anything to live in paradise. Plus if you are a flight volunteer you get to help a pup to their new home and get a flight to Europe/USA or even home to Aus. Pretty cool. I'll check out your link now.
  13. Yeah so we all do sort of the same thing. I bought a big lot of the Chinese takeaway containers too, but they seem to get lost and broken. When I bring them in to be washed I just rinse & chuck in the dishwasher but then whoever unpacks the dishwasher puts the containers with our "human" containers and then they get taken to work or used for things and broken and lost haha. I'm considering investing in some freezer containers specifically for freezing they might last better. If I had toy breeds or cats I would use baby food freezer storage things, I saw some the other day at Kmart & they would be perfect for little pets.
  14. Hello, just wondering on how everyone stores their raw food and how they do meal prep. I saw a pic on Instagram of someone who had meal prep super down pat and had everything all laid out and it reminded me I need to really sort out my dogs' food haha. We sort of fell out of routine over Xmas and need to get organised again! We have a garage fridge/freezer and use the freezer to keep their raw food. We have tried freezer bags (currently using those) but they often leak when defrosting. Zip lock bags which work pretty well and we freeze them flat so it fits much more, but they also leak a little and are pretty pricey for one use. Chinese takeaway disposable plastic rectangle containers, I'm sure you know what I mean. They are ok but they become brittle and crack a lot from being in the freezer and don't last many uses. I'd love to know what people find the best way of storing is, we usually feed chopped up meat & liver in one meal and usually chicken drumsticks in another, but we need to get back into raw feeding properly again.
  15. Saw this little boy on Petrescue who is in Glenfield Road Animal Shelter. Look at that sad little face! I don't think it really fits with what you wanted but he's pretty cute. https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/513741
  16. Yes I agree with that. With Scrappi, baths, towels and blow drys are now a fun game. We get excited and happy and praise him when we blow dry him and be all silly, and we also play "the towel monster" haha, looks silly but it works. As Karen said, I think that it's a good idea to let the pup know when they are being picked up, rather than just suddenly picking them up. Lets them have an idea of what's going on. We do the same when putting the dogs harnesses/collars on, we say "harness" or "collar".

  18. When he could fit, scrappi used to hide under the couch. There was a lining on the bottom which had ripped a bit when we moved, so he would crawl under there and sit in it like a hammock. Haha
  19. We usually feed home-made raw for dinner and a high quality kibble for breakfast. But a few times we have used Big Dog BARF and found it really awesome. It's definitely handy to grab a sealed up patty and defrost it the night before and have it ready to go. Although it did take me half a box of it to figure out it had a peely bit to open hahaha I'd been cutting it the whole time. We've had the fish and the rabbit, both are good and I like to buy flavours that have meats that aren't cheaply/readily available at the supermarket. As mentioned before, I'm not sure what the quality or price of meat in Taiwan is. I'm not sure if they outsource? Do you live in the city? I haven't been to Taiwan, but have been to HK. If I recall correctly they had the Chinese butchers which sold all the fun & weird "bits" haha. Raw pigs ears, all sorts of guts, trotters, chicken feet, duck (yum! Costs a lot here ) etc. Although not sure of the regulations there if they might use hormones in the animals which could get in your dogs diet. As an occasional treat it would be good though. Edible bones are definitely important to include though, things like chicken necks (if your dog can handle those), chicken feet/wings/drumsticks.
  20. It's crazy! They are definitely the trendy breed of dog that everyone seems to want, especially in/near the city! When I was in Sydney the other week I saw loads of them! They aren't very popular around where I live, I suppose though where I live is semi-rural. I think it's repulsive that breeders are breeding "rare" or "exotic" colours that used to be disqualifications and then going and charging upwards of $5,000. I suppose, yes, there would be some reasons why Frenchies might cost more for a breeder than a different breed (need artificial insemination & C-sections more often than some breeds, plus they can be unhealthy if not bred well etc) but I'm sure they haven't always been this expensive. People are obviously jumping on the bandwagon for the $$$, and breeders who have been breeding for a while would be rising the price because everyone else is. Another fear with breeds like Frenchies becoming so excessively popular is that puppy millers and BYB breed them carelessly which would make the genepool/breed unhealthier. Same with dachshunds being so popular, and pugs. Dachies backs and little legs are so succeptable to issues that it frightens me to see them being bred for pet shops etc by BYB and puppy farmers. But when you have a look at the amount of dachshund litters (mini/std/wire/smooth/long) there are barely any, and Frenchies have 72 puppy notices at one time! And that's just on dogzonline, there are also tonnes on Gumtree and in pet shops. That's a crazy amount! Last time I checked, Labradors (most popular breed in the world?) had less pups available than Frenchies! It won't be good at all for the breed to have such a sudden spike in popularity I don't think!
  21. That looks awesome I wish I'd seen it & somehow been able to go! My Grandmother really wanted to go to the Treasures of Versailles exhibit but had no one to go with so we could've gone! That's a shame. Two of my favourite things; dogs & art!
  22. Ok I'll go follow you, and then I will try to add you to the group.
  23. We're in the Maitland area On Instagram there is a group called the "Cute Dogs Club" I think haha. There are a bunch of local dogs and dog owners and the person who I believe started the group, Rocco a cavalier & his owner, often posts details for events, meet ups/play days and dog friendly beaches/parks If you're interested PM me on here and I can give you the details and try to add you!
  24. If no one will do it for the full time, you could get a few people to take turns house sitting or having him stay with them. Say someone takes him for 3 weeks, then another for a few more etc. Still that could be a bit hard on the dog being shipped around between new places he isn't familiar with. When we go away (longest has been 2 weeks so I'm not very experienced to help you) we take the dogs to stay with family. You could get someone you trust that the dog already knows and is familiar with. Or you could get a dog sitter/house sitter.
