  1. Erny, I have been watching this thread...............so far so good and things look to be improving which is great for Mandela but also very good for you too! Carol is great with the dogs and she truly has the touch! I will continue to watch this thread for updates and I wish you both the best of luck!
  2. Hi Peachy, I am very sorry to hear about your bad news. I assume you have had xrays to confirm this?? I would possibly try to treat this naturally. Good luck. I would like to hear what you decide.
  3. Erny start with a cup of milk, most dogs take to it with ease. I have adult Rottweilers as well as puppies who all get goats milk. Our pups are all raised with goats milk as part of the diet. I also recommend you use it throughout your dogs life. A good meal to give is goats milk, a couple of tablespoons of yoghurt, add an egg or two (with the shell crushed up), mix it all up and serve. I also add other supplements if I use it as a main meal. Also very good to give bitch's in whelp as well as lactating canine mums. If you can get fresh that is great but if not, then you can find in Safeway (Pauls brand) in the milk fridge (not all carry it) as well as getting the UHT located in the long life milk section. A very special lady who was our local supplier died in the recent fires trying to save her beloved goats (RIP Rae, I dearly miss our chats)..... I will now have to get it from another Dairy Goat farmer who is located near Druion (sp?) who was good friends with Rae and I believe has some of her goats.
  4. There are many Pet Foods with this additive. You as the consumer need to make yourself aware of what you purchase for your canines, read carefully what the ingredients are and what perservatives are used. Educate yourself on the codes and or names used and what they really are. It is a mine field out there when it comes to commercial foods for the dogs. I prefer to feed fresh foods and I get the dogs mince from my butcher who will give me what I ask for and no other extras. Good luck with your homework!
  5. Berty, I am so sorry to hear about your loss of Honey. May she rest in peace and always look over you. I always remember what a friend said to me many many moons ago. Always cherish the time you have because tomorrow they may be gone. Unfortunatley for our beloved Black and Tans they are not here for long. RIP Honey
  6. I am sorry to say I totally disagree, because a dog can run does NOT mean that it's hips are fine. I have a bitch here that can move all day and she works and works...but sadly her hips are stuffed. Another example - a dog that did a lot of winning in the AB ring as well as doing very very well at Specialty level did move great, could keep moving correctly....but sadly that one had very high scoring hips.................you would have never known by the way it moved. As I have said .......Just because a dog moves great does Not mean it has great hips, radiographic evidence is the only True way to know for sure. I would rather have an informed picture of the health status of hips than guess based on movement alone..............but that is my opinion.
  7. Personally, I think all breeding dogs should be screened for HD, it is not only a large breed dog problem. Those that say just because Fred moves fine means his hips are fine is a load of rubbish.........the only way to know for a fact that the hips of a dog are good / suitable is by radiographic evidence which is scored by a recognised reader.
  8. Anne, my heart goes out to you at this time. Run free Sophie you will always be remembered for your courage. Your legacy will be that your fight will be able to hopefully help others in theirs. RIP Sophie
  9. Glad to hear that Sophie is doing well. Very glad to hear that Ollie doesn't have to have that Op (yet).....fingers crossed you can manage it as it is. Wishing the fur kids all the best!!!
  10. RIP Jaida............no more pain...... ..........its your turn to be free Hugs to you Shek..........
  11. To any others that I have missed, my heart goes out to you as you fight for your dogs. Sometimes life is just to bloody short!!!!!! And sometimes time just flys by before we even realise it!!!! Enjoy today and live life well! Hugs to you all.
  12. I'm so sorry to hear the bad news today Shekhina, fingers crossed for Jaida that she is just having a bad day only.........it does happen, as you know I think about you both each day. cavNrott, I'm wishing you and Sophie all the very best...........fingers crossed for both of you and wishing you all the best for tomorrow. Thank you both for sharing your journey as hard as it is it helps others in the same situation. Hugs for you all
  13. cavNrott I hope today is a better day for Sophie, lets hope it is the hot weather that has been affecting her............ Shekhina, same goes for Jaida, I too hope the weather is the affecting factor............... Lets face it most of us don't like the heat and the black n tans mostly don't like the heat! Wishing you both all the best for the girls and thank you for the updates. Fingers and toes crossed for them!
  14. I agree with the others here, could be for a number of reasons. Have his back checked out to make sure it isn't the cause. With Rottweilers we sometimes see cow hocked pups, it can be a growth thing and many do straighten up with age, sometimes it is structural. I wouldn't be over exercising a young pup as it will do damage to young joints. You really need to know what is normal in the lines, I suggest you go back to the breeder to ask........... I would suspect at this age it is a growth thing as in a loose puppy going through through the ganglies - JMHO
  15. Wishing all the Black N tans all the best. I hope they and the humans are coping Ok in this heat. Best wishes to all!
  16. cavNrott, so very glad to hear about Sophies continued good news. And thank you for sharing the above information, very very interesting reading. Fingers crossed for the future with Sophie, Good luck!
  17. ZedNQ so sorry to hear about Zed, RIP and be forever free
  18. This a great idea, I look forward to watching this thread grow.
  19. Thank you very much for sharing the xrays....................and sometimes you need to xray to see whether it is genetics that have caused the tooth not to erupt or something else...........but as you now know xrays don't lie. Again thank you. Good luck with your girl!!!!
  20. Chicken heads and feet are very good for your dogs, it is us humans that have a bit of a hard time with it. Just thought you may like to know that some of the chicken rolls on the market are made from head and feet. The feet hold it all together.
  21. My sincere condolences to you all with your sick Rotties. Cancer is such an awful thing and it clearly doesn't discriminate. I too have lost a Rott to Osteosarcoma, and know to well the pain of watching your dog deal with it day to day. Thinking of you all that are living with this day to day with your dogs and to those that have recently lost your dog / s my sincere condolences on your loss. RIP.
  22. Vaccinating for KC is IMO a waste of money. Everybody I know who has vaccinated their dogs for it have had their dogs come down with KC shortly after. As said previously there are a number of strains of KC. Sorry to hear that your dogs have it but it seems to be doing the rounds in a number of states at present.
  23. Yes I have had my vet suggest this for suspected ear mites and supply a packet ( I have a number of large dogs and this was the cheapest option to treat all of the dogs). I have found no consquences for doing it other than the suspected mite problem cleared up. It was suggested that the capsule be emptied into a small specimen jar and 1 drop syringed into the ears.
  24. I have been feeding a BARF diet to my dogs for over 10 + years. I do not believe in commercial dry or wet foods, and will not use them. I would suggest that the previous poster has had bad luck with the bones. Without knowing what type of bone has caused the problem to your dogs, I would suggest that a larger bone (one that is as big as the dogs mouth) be used. Some dogs are pigs and just swallow things whole, eg chicken wings. Bones that I use are Chicken frames, wings and necks, lamb flaps and necks, venison necks, brisket bones are a great bone, get the butcher to cut them up into smaller pieces for you, they are 100% digestable and I use these bones as the base of RMB's. My guys get a large marrow bone that has been cut in half long ways, that way they can get to the marrow and less risk of teeth problems. Mind you I have big dogs so I am cautious of bones that are to small for them. Note brisket bones are very fatty (which a dog needs animal fat in his diet) and can make your dog fat should they be over used. Bones are a natural teeth cleaner, dogs need bones in their diet IMO. One only has to look at the rise of dental problems in canines and what the "experts" say to feed your dog. Soft foods etc. Why should I buy the "teeth cleaning designed treats" when I can feed bones that are nutrionally excellent for your dogs and a more natural food for the dog than those made up things that I see advertised / available for dogs.......to me it just doesn't make sense????? As always JMHO.
