Clipping a dog that has not been washed or that is dirty or matted isa good way to blunten your blades quickly. I know because I have done it If I am being lazy I will clipp off the excess before washing, but for a super dooper finish always wash & blow dry first Using clipper spray whilst clipping helps & storing your blades correctly when finished helps as well. I keep mine in a jar of kerosene! But I have heaps & heaps of blunt or rusted ones -I might try the nice man!

What sort of meat & raw bones do you feed your dogs!! Most dogs are feed human quality beef or chicken bones? 20 years as a vet nurse have never heard of a dog with toxo!! Much more luckily to come in contact with toxo from vegies from market gardens or cat poo that has been hanging around in litter trays from a while!

Whats The Shortest Clip You Have Done
Poodle Mum replied to charlie mouse's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Some people like value for their money & they think if you clip the coat off shorter, visits to the groomer will be less frequent!! I only use a #10 if matted on the body. 7F or 5F looks much better ;) -
To Clip Or Not To Clip?
Poodle Mum replied to Jack@sandysmum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Wow - he is a hairy boy - His coat looks more golden than poodle. I would suggest clipping off for summer, thats just me ;) .....I like the short & tidy clip, easy to look after, but it will probably shock you initially!! -
"ouch" She can't hurt it buy licking at it as long as it is not oozzing pus!..........An e-collar is easy enough to make & it will stop her reaching the area, if that is what you wish. Good luck

Oi palane!! when you find the secret receipe for poodle hair will you let me know

Smelly poodles ears know them well. Yep, you have to & clean your poodley ears or poodley cross ears. If the brown/black crusty stuff builds up.........Phew. Blossom looks like she has hanging-down ears (this is the speak I use in puppy classes ) & the wax just doesn't come out as easy if she has erect ears!! I can vouch for not over plucking. I am a bit of a nazi when it comes to hairy ears & the vet nurse in me took over and I gave my girl an irritatde & sore ear :p

Comb For Tangled Poodle?
Poodle Mum replied to Poodle wrangler's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Don't you hate that Theres not much you can do except keep at in with the slicker. Part all the hair away to separate the tangle, then just keep "slickering" it. Sometimes you can split the tangle with a pair of scissors then brush with a slicker. Put one blade of the scissors under the tangle......between him & the tangle then use a sawing action upwards with the scissors....does that make sense? If all else fails & is too time consuming........you might give him an all over clip Good luck -
My Std Poodle girl bloated after eating raw bones. Thankfully I got her to the vets in only the nic of time She survived emergency surgery & had her stomach stitched to her adbo wall.

Counteracting Food Aggression
Poodle Mum replied to StaceyB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When sitting with her whilst eating start adding extra treats to her bowl rather than punishing. You want her to think that when huamns are approaching whilst she is eating they are going to maybe bring extra special stuff.....not remove stuff! Nedd to feed lots more bones, especially turkey necks if thats what you are going to give her. This will de value the bones & necks. If growling doesn't improve........don't feed turkey necks! I would never allow my kids to remove food from a dog whilst they are eating, you just setting some dogs up for failure. -
I'm looking after a Wei here that is an extremely itchy boy & reacts to loooots of things. I try to keep him off cortisone tabs for as long as I can, but when his belly is lumpy & red he needs the tabs. Immediate sign effects are increased thirst & hunger ( you don't have to feed any extra! ) just make sure there is more water. My dog always gets an upset gut, so its normal for him to gey diaherra (sp!) & very smelly....if you know what I mean :p More peeing as well. He would eat anything if I let him & loves to scavenge if he gets the chance Longer term sign effects - my dog is shaped like a lump, he is o'weight & has a large barrel shaped body. Animals on long term (over years)cortisone are prone to developing diabetes & other immune disorders as well as tumors. Cortisone is a great drug if used correctly, but lifestly needs to be managed as well. Hope this helps

Poodle Mum replied to ShellyBeggs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I lost a Std poodle to this disease when he was 15mths old. He was diagnosed, then died 4 days later But I know some that have survived, but it a long road. -
YES it's the same thing as vet nurses back I've been washing, drying, lifting & grooming for 15yrs & my back is stuffed. Its not only the dog its all the crap that that you lift in & out of the car @ dog shows ;)

I have the same problem with my 15mth old female Std Poodle :D I have tried Satin balls & yes she loves them....when she is in the mood. She just doesn't seem that fussed in eating. I also have 3 others dogs, Poppy carrys on when it is food time....then walks away like I am feeding her poison She is happy to let our 16yo cat eat her food. She is a pain in the bum, many a judge has commented on her condition in the ring. I wish I new the answer to getting weight on my dogs!!!!!

Poodle Mum replied to mrsgrumblebum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If we can put it on our face, I figure it should be OK for dogs to eat..............One of my poodles managed to chew up a tube of white zinc cream, typical poodle Your dog might have a blast out in the poo department -
I always clip my girl on the body with a 7F, in summer I will give her chicken legs with braclets

Luxating Patella + Something Else?
Poodle Mum replied to Poodle wrangler's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi PW Have you got your vet to show you how to ease the patella back into the correct spot? Has he suggested stabilising the joint with surgery? I know this sounds boring but I would suggested keeping him really restricted ( crate or xpen ) & keep him on the lead when walking all the time.....even when he goes outside to the toilet. Hang in there...........sending you poodlely hugs! -
Agility Classes On The Central Coast?
Poodle Mum posted a topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am keen to find out if anyone here goes to agility classes on the central coast?? I have a 15mth old jumping Std Poodle trying to grow hair for the show ring.........we want to try some agility while we are waiting!!! -
Very sad news. She touched my heart, if only for one day. But I was "bullied" & she changed my ideas.

Very common.......the canine hormones are strange. When a bitch has a season, regardless of whether she is mated or not, her body will think she is pregnant!!! Some will have puppies ( only if mated of course!!) & all the others will have a false pregnancy, just varying degree & symptoms......weird isn't it :D My girls will always get sooky & carry around a "toy baby" ......at the moment its a plastic goofy dog!! I never give them any drugs to get rid of symptoms, nature takes its own course. Sadly though I live in fear of pyos ( have already had 2 bitches that needed surgery) & my girl is going to be speyed.

Need to dissolve all the "brown erk" in the canals!! PW One week nice & clean.............next week it looks like the "pit of doom" I hate smelly poodle ears :D

Thanks all, I sent an email to bayer the other day, the reply was when they took over Vetxx they didn't get the rights to Leo Ear cleaner. She says not available in Oz. Shame its the best stuff for moving the wax. I find epiotic doesn't work as well or the illum ear cleaner. Will definatley give the metho a go.......thanks Shmoo

Is Desexing A Bitch In Season Safe?
Poodle Mum replied to my_sibe_owns_me's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes it is higher, and the aftercare needs to be more confined, as where to uterus has been removed and tied off with sutures is more enlarged. A bitch that is allowed to jump & play in aftercare may shift some off this internal sutures! Too high a risk for me!
