  1. Happy birthday Gemma basset! What a gorgeous looking girl she is! ♥♥♥
  2. Mocha is adorable! I confess to not being so much of a little dog person, but I did meet a rather lovely griffon at work a while back and the more I see of him, the less impossible it is to imagine myself owning one some day.
  3. Happy birthday to Ollie! His (and your) story has been inspirational! Hugs to you both!
  4. No, we don't put the pics of the dogs on the website, for a number of reasons. One is, the dogs come and go through the system too quickly (if it all goes to plan). Also, we try to match the dogs personalities and characteristics to the right family; we were finding that if people saw a particular dog they liked the look of on the website, but it wasn't the right dog for them in temperament, it became a problem because people set their hearts on "that" dog. It got to be a bit of a hassle to be honest, so we have found that not having the pics of available dogs up there prevented that disappointment and some of the unrealistic expectations of potential adopters. There is a lot of great info in the website though, and pictures of lovely adopted dogs! :D
  5. Unfortunate, thought the 19000 was Australia wide and the 450 was Victoria only (I think), but still, it can be improved, which is something all the GAPs around Australia have been working on. The story was good...should create more interest from adopters! Stumpy looks like a cutie!! :D
  6. Actually, I believe in certain circumstances the two species will mate naturally. I went to a zoo many years ago (in Australia) and they had two Tigons that were the result of an "oops" mating in a circus (through the bars of their cages). Because it was an accidental mating, and they didn't want anyone to think they had done it deliberately, they refused to use them in their circus and donated them to this zoo instead to live out their days. I must say they were very lovely animals...one of them even let me touch him through the fence. :p
  7. I didn't want to wash the dogs' things in my washing machine, so I bought a second hand front loader for about $100, especially for the dog stuff. It's awesome!
  8. Awesome, thank you so much. I had been looking for one of these - just put my order in!
  9. What size/brand are the greyhound sized ones Rebanne...I really need one for my old girl...she seems to hate wearing coats but it's getting too cold for her to go without something, so I thought a heating pad might be the answer.
  10. Yes, I feel very lucky to be able to do this. Fortunately, I can afford to not earn much (cos neither job is on the high end of the pay scale ) . I did also do a very short stint as a vet nurse, but that didn't work out. I feel blessed to be able to do what I am doing and to really enjoy my work; I have learned so much (and continue to learn all the time).
  11. I have two part time jobs, and I am lucky as both of them involve dogs. . One is as a track attendant, working at the Greyhound races. The other is as an assessment assistant (plus some other duties) for Greyhound Adoption Program Qld. I love both my jobs! ETA Also a pet owner of course...4 greyhounds!
  12. There looks to be a recue group in California for these gorgeous dogs - http://www.peruvianincaorchidrescue.org/ Might be worth contacting them, in case they are not aware of this dog.
  13. I used to know a greyhound X ridgeback - slightly strange looking dog because he had the lean bone structure of a greyhound in his body, but a big square boxy head...he was dark brindle colour. He wasn't the nicest dog in the world either, but he had been rescued from an abusive home, so that may have affected his temperament.
  14. In most cases maybe, but honestly I don't think anyone could ever guarantee that. Many, many years ago I had both GSDs and cats. One day I came home from work to find one of the dogs had killed one of the cats...a cat she had known and been friendly with for 5 years. She was covered in blood and protecting her kill from the other dogs (they actually weren't particularly interested in it). So, I certainly would never think that you can ever fully 100% trust dogs with cats, or any other small animals.
  15. My grandparents had a dachshund called "Chips" (don't know why they called him that). I currently have a "Candy". I'm not a huge fan of human names (or at least commonly used human names) for dogs...that's just my personal thing, but I do like some of the food (and drink) names in this thread - might have to make some notes for the future.
  16. Well, in 70-90% of cases anyway. Hope Portia is feeling better soon!
  17. Very sorry to hear of the loss of your beautiful girl. RIP Phoebe.
  18. I really detest this kind of "do you want fries with that" up-selling on medical stuff. As others have already said, if it is crucial, then it should be included...if it is not included, it isn't crucial in my book. I certainly don't worry about pre-GA bloods for surgery on young healthy dogs. If it was an older dog, or one that has some health problems already, I might consider it (though certainly not at $240! ). Ditto the fluids. It's OK for me because I have been around for a while and know my own mind; I am more than happy to say "no". I do worry that newer or less confident owners will be pressured by a kind of emotional blackmail into these overpriced extras that are not necessary.
  19. Sorry for your losses Bartok. Two in one week is a cruel blow. As Gapvic pointed out, greyhounds are not noted for their recall...if off lead and they see something of interest they are off and gone. If they don't get hit by a car or smack into a tree, they will more than likely get lost...they have a terrible sense of direction. Definitely on lead only would be my recommendation.
  20. Actually I think originally they were bred in an attempt to create a non-allergenic breed to be a guide dog...failed for that purpose though as of course only 50% of them retain the poodle non-shedding type coat. Really can't see them becoming a true breed in their own right in the near future though, because of the issues already identified by others in this post.
  21. Aside from the issues with your dog (and there have been some very good suggestions here already which I can't improve on), maybe you need to look into some counselling for yourself to help you get over what has obviously been a traumatic experience for you.
  22. Thanx! I tried to reply but your inbox was full! I appreciate the info and will make sure to take note of it...unsurprisingly it;s not the first time I have heard someone say that. Cheers!
