  1. This does not work when one dog pretty much fits in the other dog's mouth. Go the boot people. I'd happily lose a leg to save one of my dogs.. my hands are very much a part of my living. That's actually the correct thing to do....go in with the boot and kick like hell. Never go in with arms or have your face close I always prefer to choke any dog off a bite, I realise this may not be able to be accomplished by all people which I would then suggest kicking.
  2. It is hard enough to find a good Schutzhund club, but by you're standard the clubs which Bernhard Flinks and Ivan Balbanov train at are no good.
  3. Not BS at all. The number of Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds being used as police dogs has rapidly increased in the past 5 years. I would not be surprised to see Belgian Malinois exceed the numbers of German Shepherds being used especially in European countries. What Yesmaam has said is spot on.
  4.   There are really experienced people commenting on what they know about dogs and protection training why be a sarcastic ....? What Monelite has said is spot on.
  5. Try sending a PM to Poodlefan if she does not spot this thread. She is based in the ACT and might be able to recommend someone.
  6. unfortunately O'Conner is not known for his common sense, he is quite good at using scaremongering tactics to push through legislation.
  7. I am guessing it is only a ACT policy as the pound at Yagoona has rehomed dogs for training in these roles as little as 3 months ago when I assisted someone with temperament assessing a dog for explosives detection.
  8. How strange, I guess the RSPCA shelter at Yagoona is a bit behind the times with this policy...
  9. It is rare but Labs have been trained as dual purpose police dogs in a few different countries. I have trained a couple for protection work in Australia a few years ago. The main problem is due to the stereotype Labradors have as being friendly dogs they do fail as being a effective visual deterrent to most people.
  10. I am surprised no one has suggested dog grooming. I make it a daily activity to spend a few minutes with my dog giving them a quick brush and checking for any injuries.
  11. Why is it trainer error? The trainer has obviously made a mistake in the incident you are talking about.
  12. I have found Dogtainers to be fairly poor with customer service. I always seem to speak to the same man when I ring up who is next to useless. I have found Jetpets to offer better customer service.
  13. I am sure you can find a German Shepherd breeder who will have puppies that will be of a similar size and appearance to the dog you posted a picture of. check out the link below of available litters, the list gets updated fairly often. http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/puppies/german-shepherd-dog.asp
  14. Stopping hysteria and online dog forum very rarely go hand in hand. Nice facebook page though.
  15. If I was not so flat out with work at the moment I would have liked to get involved with the program. How many weeks are you expecting the program to go for?
  16. I am too impulsive for you to be advertising about Malinois puppies. I am finding it hard trying to dedicate the required amount of time training my current monster with work sending me all over the place.
  17. I agree with Staranais you will probably get a better response having the thread moved to the training section. It would be worth looking at what courses Tafe in Victoria have available. Tafe in NSW have some pretty good short courses which are run by some well known dog trainers which are good to complete in addition to the NDTF or Delta course.
  18. The dog rushed at the police officer in an aggressive manner, whether you believe the dog posed a risk or not does not matter. The officer believed it posed a risk and used his firearm which he is justified in doing so. It is justifiable to use a firearm against what you perceive to be a real and imminent threat to you're safety. I do not understand why people are saying the force is unjustifiable, The force is justifiable under every Use of Force policy regarding firearms I have ever seen or worked under. Just because you do not agree with something does not mean it is not justifiable under the policies and procedures set out by the department for use of firearms.
  19. The police officer believed the dog posed a serious risk, that is why it was shot. He is justified in his actions, just because you do not like his actions does not mean they were not justified.
