  1. She is a gorgeous dog K9 Angel, be careful giving her heartworm prevention. If she has heartworm, the preventative could potentially kill her, she should have a blood test done first to rule it out. She looks as though she really enjoyed her walk, you did a lovely thing for her.
  2. Yes, Proban is for ticks too but it is taken every other day (or thereabouts), not monthly.
  3. When you first bring him home it might be an idea to have a friend pop around in the middle of the day for feeding and play. I wouldn't leave a pup near anything in the garage or home that it could chew/destroy. Then again, I am one of those who believe that pups should be out digging holes, tasting dirt and lying under a tree - not locked indoors all day while people are out. I personally couldn't leave a pup for that long but I have the luxury (as I see it, lol) of being able to work from home. Plenty of people do it though and their dogs are perfectly fine! Being a large breed pup if you give the pup plenty of attention and play time before you go he will more than likely snooze away most of that time anyway.
  4. I bought one years ago, lovely collar/quality etc. Except I've noticed The Reject Shop now stocks them and they're very cheap, but they look cheap too. I wonder if they do a different line just for the Reject Shop.
  5. I think she's confused, a lot of people aren't very clear about what preventatives they use or what they're called. I've heard some doozys.
  6. I think it's more that the breed itself is over represented coming from BYB's. When nursing we did see a lot of that breed in with skin problems, but none of them were even close to an okay example of the breed. Mine didn't ever had problems.
  7. A pedigree is often 'just a pet' for many of us But yes a rescue dog is always an option. I'm guessing a puppy appeals for the kids but Goldie Rescue take on lots of dogs if you prefer a dog out of the puppy terrors (like I do). Remembering that puppies jump and knock kids over, mouth them and so on. I'm get the shudders just thinking about puppies
  8. I don't think you can go past a Goldie for a larger family dog. They do need plenty of obedience training though. I know Goldies who rarely get walked and they cope fine, most people around my area are on acreage and the dogs just burn around on their properties. I think it just depends on the dog, some Goldies can be nutso active though it's just luck of the draw with some breeds and their activity levels.
  9. TBH I would have no clue how to clip a Borders foot, I've never groomed one as they are a rare breed here. Given that the OP shaves the dog off I just assumed they were after a neat and tidy look but more, to stop irritating the dog. And yep that is exactly how I get rid of the hair from between the toes (which is what the OP asked about ) from both top and bottom of paw. Further back in the pads I clip. I was just thinking about you and Lani yesterday! Was wondering how you got on with a new groomer and your 'Lani Styling'.
  10. Oh poor girl. So she got out while the car was moving? What a horrible accident - worst nightmare sort of stuff. Fingers crossed she's found safe and sound.
  11. Hey, just noticed you are in the Highlands too. Happy to show you how if you want to swing by sometime.
  12. Put the dog on a high table and lift his paw at a good height for you both. Push the hair from the bottom up through the gaps of his toes so it is sticking out in tufts on the top of the paw. Cut in an upward angle. Comb backwards across the top of the paw again and cut again in an upward angle to neaten it.
  13. Maybe the groomer gave him clipper rash? I second the suggestion to check the pads of his paws thoroughly.
  14. One of my clients used it and the dogs gums were 'burnt'. Very red, inflamed and sore.
  15. Sorry, can't help you but thought I'd reply so you didn't feel unloved :D Have only used it for the one season and loved the results.
  16. I'm not surprised it was done begrudgingly. The antivenin alone can make a dog very sick and give them long lasting side effects. I would not ever opt to do that unless it was a last resort. "Just in case" doesn't warrant what the antivenin can do to your pets system. You seem very bitter about veterinarians.
  17. That is incorrect. Advantix does repel ticks, you are mistaking the way it works with Frontline (where the tick has to attach in order to die). I would say it is your tick prevention product which is working to fight ticks rather than the dogs diet. ;)
  18. Maremma Rescue make them for fund raising so you know you're buying for a good cause.
  19. Symptoms can show up to a week later so keep your pup quiet. Given the size of the ticks I don't think you will have any problems though.
  20. I like to know if breeders have other animals. It certainly makes life easier knowing they've been raised with them (plus kids). I would however, omitthe part about being a Club member - a lot of breeders aren't for political reasons and it doesn't make them any less ethical. You just need to know that they are registered with the states canine council. Are you a member of any Clubs? Don't ask What do you like about the **? Don't ask Have the parents had any health checks/scoring? Ask What is the temperament of the parents? Ask Have the parents been shown? not relevant for me - I know breeders who breed perfectly healthy puppies who don't show for their own reasons - it's a plus but I wouldn't discount a breeder for not showing. Have the parents had a litter together before? Don't ask How are the puppies raised? (Outside, inside, combination?) Ask Will they have seen other animals, eg cats, chooks etc Ask What age is the puppy released to its new owner? Ask, but not necessary in first questions they will offer this information/you can ask later on in correspondence just keep to the basics to begin with How much is the puppy? Is a deposit required? Don't ask straight away What documents come with the puppy? Registration (main / limited)? Ask Vaccination? Ask but in next lot of communication, chances are pup will receive all necessary shots/chip Microchip? Pedigree? Is there a vet check of the puppy before release? Ask If kept crated/penned is there a separate area for toileting, ie do they go on grass / paper? Don't ask - but find out if raised indoors or outdoors - used to being crated if this is what you will continue with Are they currently playing with kongs or chew toys? Irrelevant, don't ask
  21. Absolutely they should be! Unfortunately children aren't always reliable. It has been drummed in to mine almost obsessively yet I still wouldn't trust her to always ask. Half the time when she's asking her hand is already stretched out ready to pat the dog and if the owner says yes my daughter often gets in the dogs face. It doesn't help that she has no fear and I am border line paranoid so we aren't a good mix. Obviously I am there with her but it's always nerve wracking for me, not wanting to put the fear of God in to her and pass on my paranoia but also trying to teach her to respect anything with teeth is proving more difficult than I would have ever imagined. Children are their own little personalities, not robots, so we can't always assume that a parent has been negligent in their duty to teach a child certain behaviours if the child behaves inappropriately. Sorry Katrina, I've just reread your post and I am not having a go just discussing ankle biters and how unreliable they can be.
  22. It's never too soon - the time is right when it's right for you! I actually think it's easier earlier rather than later - helps to take your mind off the loss but in no way diminish how you feel. I suck at name suggestions as I like dorky names. Basil? Roger? Herbert?
  23. Wow, intense! Good on you though for putting so much thought in to it The breeder probably needed a stiff drink after reading your email I agree with JulesP, try and salvage it by emailing her back and explaining you've been chatting with other doggy people and you realise you maybe have gone a tad overboard.
  24. Nic, I am rural. I mow twice a week and any wood piles are outside of my fenced area. We wear work boots outside and I make a lot of noise going in to feed sheds - mainly because I don't want to see a mouse *squeal* I have a water easement which runs through my yard and the duck pond so removing water sources outside isn't possible. I am not sure what else I can do - I reckon I could call my house dogs off a snake (have done it before) but I am not always around to supervise the Maremmas.
