Unwell Rotties

Basically on the X-Ray Eza you can see how it has eaten into the bone...

It hasn't gone to her brain as yet as there are many layers to the skull...

It has started to affect her hearing and she is scratching at her ears, when we had the scans done it had not gone into her

sinuses or into her spinal cord but we are assuming that it will...

We really don't have anything to go by and i have not been able to find another dog through all my research and the vet said that he has only ever heard of one other case like it :)

We knew that she was special but we didn't think that she was this special....

I have hardly been on DOL of late and the only times I've popped in was to check for updates of our sick dogs, so this new sub-forum IMO is a great idea, Thanks Troy and those that suggested it.

I love that everyone is being so supportive and it is helping all the rotts mums and dads cope a little better and not feel so alone with their heartache and grief.

To CavNrott, BP, and ZednQ I send you all warmth and kindness, positive thoughts and understanding for what you are going thru. I have no words that can truly make you feel less sad except to say I understand how you and your families are feeling. Be strong for them.

RnB, big hugs to you too on the loss of Tyson, Im very sorry to hear this and please pass on my sympathies to Tysons owners too.

Hi Eza, no it's not breed specific but seems to be much more prevalent in this breed than other breeds. The Rottie breed is suffering really badly with osteosarcoma over the last few years. It seems to be showing itself in uncommon places in this breed too. A few of us here have lost our Rotties to osteosarcoma.

Most osteosarcoma happens in the limbs but BP's girl has it in the bones of her head and my girl has it in her bottom jaw bone as well as a tumour on her gum.

My son's Rottweiler was pts last week. She had it in her shoulder. Bone pain is very severe.

What do your vets say about the pain management?

My girl Shadow (greyhound) started limping one day, nothing much but we took her to the vet, he took Xrays and sent us to the ortho specialist the next day, who diagnosed osteosarcoma. Given the location (very high on the leg) and her age (9yo), she advised against amputation and that Shadow get her wings that day. She also said that the usual pain meds aren't very effective with this type of cancer, so didn't recommend that we leave it and just try to treat the pain.

When my Rotty Tara had bone cancer we used codeine phosphate for her pain and this was fantastic for her. It was me who suggested its use to the vets because Im a nurse and have seen it be very good for humans bone pain be it a fracture or bone mets due to cancer. It is also an opiate and so some vets may be cautious about dispensing it but mine had no hesitation and as I said it worked really well for her in conjuction with an anti-inflammatory med.

CavNrott, BP, how are Sophie and Keisha, did they have a good day? I really hope they did. BP, did you go to the vets today for more meds, if so what are they? What did he say about Keisha shaking her head and did you mention her hiding behind the couch?

Sorry for the questions but I am very interested.

Thanks guys, I spoke with them first thing today and they have changed the way that the Feldene is given.

She now gets 1/2 tablet morning and night, no head shaking or ear scratching tonight and she hasn't hidden away from us at all...

We think that the hiding has something to do with wanting to be close to us but also it is darker there benind the lounge and she tends to put her head under the side table in the dark..

She hardly goes outside so we are assuming that maybe the light makes it worse and causes a bigger "headache" for her...

She seems better today sleeps pretty much 24/7 and doesn't move around at all normally she is in the same spots, I can go out and come home and she wouldn't have moved..

She used to greet me at the window when i got home from work now when i'm walking in the door she is still managing to try and get herself off the lounge to greet me.... Sometimes if she is asleep on my bed she wont even make it to greet me and i have to go in there and say hi to her...

IHF... Yes i would be 100% certain that the tumor has grown and is irritating her more... If you look back on the pics i posted in this thread you will see the difference that 4 months has done to the size i have a pic from december and it is about 1/2 the size from the last pic that was taken last week :(

cavNrott asked me to pass on that Sophie is doing ok today and that she is hasn't been banned or warned she is just not up to getting on here after all the nonsense.....

I've just found this thread and wanted to let all of you with your special loved rotties who are unwell that I am thinking of you all. I'm glad this thread has been setup, as I just don't have the time to check on 30-40 pages of chit chat to find your posts on the rottie thread.

Hugs to Sophie, Keisha & Zed and all the other rotts who are going under special care. :)

Thanks everyone, It means alot and i will be sure to let cavNrott know that you are thinking of her too...

Today we had a really bad morning

Kiesha wouldn't eat and was all disorientated and hid in the corner when she woke up....

I offered her some shaved ham and she spat it out on the ground

OH and i really thought that tonight was going to be horrible as we just couldn't leave her go being all strange and hiding, she really looked like she was lost and didn't have a clue where she was...

I managed to get her to eat by hand feeding her then she finally ate from her bowl then went to the kitchen and stole the rest of Diesel's food....

I thought about her all day at work and was really hoping that i would come home to find her in a better way....

What do you know i got home to her greeting me at the front door and she had the biggest happiest grin on her face i was so relieved... Jeff said that when he got home he couldn't find her anywhere and went into a panic...

Said that he looked everywhere for her and was calling her...

Her hearing must be going as he said that he found her outside playing on her own in the sand and when she noticed him she ran over to him all happy, i cant tell you how relieved we were that she was ok tonight.

I think that i changed over her medication dose wrong so that could be the reason she was so bad this morning...

She went from 3/4 tablet at night to 1/2 a tablet morning and night....

Last night i only gave her the 1/2 and then the other 1/2 this morning but i think i should still have given her the 3/4 and then started this morning with the 1/2 doses.

I'm not sure if this would do it maybe some of the nurses out there can shed some light on that one but i have a feeling now thinking about it that i should have done it the other way round.....

Just sooo thankfull that she is ok tonight, she even managed to go for a walk to the park...

Sorry BP, i was thinking that maybe it is going inwards as well as outwards and that was why she was shaking her head.

I am so sorry you had a bad morning. You must have been distraught all day.

I think about you and Keisha, Anne and Sophie and Zed and Zed_n_Q every day and hope you get another day together.

BP, that would have been so distressing. I hope you get her meds sorted and she continues to have better days. Poor baby.

CavNrott, I hope Sophie is coping and having good days. Even though you are not posting I hope you are reading our good wishes.

ZednQ, how is our Zed boy this morning. Hopefully he is enjoying the cooler weather. Much better for our sick furkids.

Thinking of you all, always.

I hope the special girls and guy are doing well today and that the cold snap is not having an adverse effect on their comfort.

cavNrott, bluepoppy and ZednQ stay strong for your exceptional dogs.

You are all doing a fantastic job looking after them, but don't forget to be kind to yourselves.

Wishing you all hot chocolate, marshmallow and Tim Tam moments today.
