^ upload the photos to a site like http://imageshack.us/ and post the link it gives you in here. I think.

Very nice photos, Snook.

I have a nifty fifty (f1.8) :D But no doggie-related photos :(

So here is one I took with that lens, on my D90 (before I got the D700)even though it's not dog-related :o

OK, here goes. For some reason the images are lighter on my camera screen than here on my computer?? .

So sorry these are SO BAD :o . I haven't edited them at all, other than to make them a little smaller.

Huh?! why aren't you happy with these? They are warm tones and lovely shallow depth of field and I think that tree is amazing!! Very moody and eerie, kinda spooky, I half expect to see a witch on a broomstick flying by. I love it.

You can play around with the depth of field, I'm guessing you had it wide open for the doggy shots which gives a limited range of what's in focus. I like the effect but you might want it wider. They greyhound has lovely kind eyes doesn't he/she.

You are far too kind Kirislin!! In my head, they are just crappy, boring dog photos :o ... your photos are all so much more creative. Any ideas why they are so much darker on the computer screen than on my camera?

Took the tree one early this morning, in the fog, and had lighter shots on the camera but they seemed over-exposed. Will take me a while to work out how to use my camera I think. On that tree photo, can you see the stone wall and bench in the pic? I can't see them on my computer screen at all, but they are quite clear on the camera.

Re the greyhound, those are his scared eyes - don't point that thing at me is what he's saying  . His name is Zephyr and you're sure to see him in lots more photos.

What brand camera do you have. I only have very basic editing skills and only use the programs that came with my camera but you would be able to lighten that tree pic up and play around with shadows and contrast more to give more definition to it. I really like it though.

Great to see you positing, gap!

On your camera, make sure you have your histogram turned on. That's the little graph on the lcd screen - that will give you a better idea of how your exposure is than looking at the photo on the screen will. If you can, turn on your blinkies so that the totally black and totally blown areas of a photo will blink to alert you - sometimes you WANT those areas, but sometimes you don't.

Remember, there's no one proper exposure - whatever you like is correct :)

Thank you everyone! I needed to update some of the dog photos on our website so took the new lens out and took heaps of photos! Here are my two favourite shots (and a shameless plug - both dogs are needing homes :o )

Gorgeous Gap, didn't take long at all  If you're interested in Lightroom keep an eye out for offers here

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/720705-REG/Adobe_65081059_Photoshop_Lightroom_3_Software.html

I got it here a couple of weeks back for $169aus, but even at its current price it's a lot cheaper than on the Aussie Adobe site ;)

But they are just standing still.... you should have seen my action photos :o ! I'm pleased with them though - managed to get it all OK without resorting to the auto settings (despite being very tempted to just turn it on around to Portrait LOL!!!).

Off to Lancefield farmers market tomorrow with camera in tow :D

thanks heaps Crazy Cresties! I've only had a little play around on Lightroom at home and found it great! Will keep an eye on the site you've suggested.
