FionaC Posted April 18, 2010 Share Posted April 18, 2010 We have a 9yr old Oriental Shorthair ... he was a single pet for 7years so he didn't adjust to us bringing Morty home very well but he's handled having Archie home (who's now 5mths old) reasonably well.... They don't really interact as such - Talin (the cat) sticks to the high places and stays mainly in the computer room when the dogs are in the rest of the house ..... Teebs Posted April 18, 2010 Share Posted April 18, 2010 I have 2 dogs, 3 cats I had Bella cat first, then got Altas, they get along very well, At knows Bella is the boss! I then got Fanta, who isnt fussed on the dogs, so they pretty much leave her alone Then Kaos, who wanted to play with both the girls, but soon learned she would get bashed up then came Sumo, it took him a long time to get along with the dogs, he would hiss and carry on everytime they were in the same room, they now are ok, but was a good 6 months before i would leave them in the same room without the dogs crated! Bella and Fanta are Moggys, Sumo is a British Shorthair. they all are good now, all sleep on the lounge (or my bed!) together, i would never ever leave them alone together though, dogs are outside or crated when I am not home :D Mum and dad have a dog and a Maine Coon, they play with each other all day! Gayle. Posted April 18, 2010 Share Posted April 18, 2010 I have 3 cats, 2 Burmese and a Maine Coon. They are all indoor cats and get along great with the dogs. The dogs greet the cats when they come it, rub noses with them and just say hello. The boy Burmese teases the dogs and tries to get them to chase him, which they're not allowed to do. Gotta laugh when I think of the saying "fighting like cats and dogs" This most certainly does not pertain to your gorgeous Joey and Leroy - A match made in heaven. Many older dogs (rescues) who have never been with cats, and cats who have never been with dogs. No issues, the dogs learn very fast that the cats are GOD. Most of my cats, exs oriental breeds (eses, ie. burmese, tonkinese, siamese), and my devon rexes are bossy with dogs and the dogs let them do everything first. It is funny seeing wolfhounds wait for a drink while a 2kg. kitty is drinking :D I have had feral cats too and they have been great with the dogs. All eat , sleep together. Interact a LOT! Crisovar Posted April 18, 2010 Share Posted April 18, 2010 3 cats, 2 older moggies, 1 young Ragdoll, no problems inside the house, cats do not go out into the yard with the dogs, they would be chased outside by a couple of the dogs and no doubt everyone would join in. We separated them initially but it took years for the cat to not run off when Zoe approached, they are fine together now, even roll around on the floor together for a belly rub although the cat would prefer if she were an only child Mostly we have to stop Zoe following the cat everywhere and her constant need to see if she smells the same as 5 minutes ago.... mita Posted April 18, 2010 Share Posted April 18, 2010 We have a domestic short-hair cat, named Sarah. She came via the University of Qld Adoption Program. They rescue friendly cats from pounds & keep them in the Centre for Companion Animal Health for up to a year. The pusses are used for non-invasive, non-hurtful research.. They get the best of care & have their own playroom at the uni with loads of volunteer attention, cuddles & play. The professor even has them spending a day with her, in her office. So these pusses are very well socialised. We asked for a puss that would be happy living with tibetan spaniels. A stroppy puss could strike out & injure their prominent eyes. The uni tests all the pusses on a rating scale of how they get on with dogs. Sarah scored the 2nd highest level of being quite happy to have a dog around....without being pushy. So she gets on wonderfully with the tibbies & has become the very best friend of Lily, the tibbie girl next door. It's wonderful to watch these 2 playing & teaming up to do insect hunts. And it doesn't matter how hard they play, they never ever hurt each other. I've never seen a dog & a cat so devoted to each other. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The Exotic was adopted from DCH, he waltzed right in here and started throwing his weight around on day one - he is now the boss. My dogs are pretty good with them but I don't leave the Staffords and the cats together when I go out. My two Persians don't defend themselves, they just flop and hope for the best. RufusTheDoofus Posted April 18, 2010 Share Posted April 18, 2010 I have a Russian Blue X DLH who is 2yo and a 7 month old DSH x Oriental. The DLH will attack the dogs if they corner her and it has taken nearly a month for Shiloh to stop bailing her up. Both dogs groom the kitten (flea biting or licking him) and he sits there and purrs or grooms them back. However, she doesn't touch Rufus because he knows the rules. Fact is, most dogs will chase stuff that runs. Kitten just lies there if a dog chases him so they dont bother. If he wants to play he runs right over one of them to try and get them to chase. He is pretty sure he is a 4kg GSD though. I have had him since 5 weeks (fostered the litter) and he was reared by Rufus as much as by me lol. Not all of the kittens were great with dogs though. Some of them tolerated the dogs and at least one wanted to claw their eyes out from day 1 and it took time for her to accept them. I will add another pup to the household one day soon and it will learn the rules but I will always be vigilant and I never leave the dogs and cats alone together. The level of interaction depends on each cat, but there is certainly no concern about leaving any of them unattended with each other. altheau Posted April 18, 2010 Share Posted April 18, 2010 (edited) When I was a kid my mum used to breed Burmese cats. we always had at least 1 dog as well and we never had any problems. Mum had a hell of a time with her last littler of kittens though. We had a lovely doberman boxer cross girl. Mum tried to wean the kittens, only to have Jess (our dog) bring on milk for them, and they had no qualms about suckling from her since their real mum had moved on ;p was pretty cute.
