Prefix Suggestions

Hi Guys,

The time has come for me to get my prefix.. But im having trouble thinking of good idea, there are alot of creative people on here so though I would ask for some (extra) help.

I have Australian Shepherds, but dont really want anything breed specific (OH shows a Pointer so it wouldnt make sense anyway)

Im happy to have anything that links to the aussies personalities though, whether it be a working word, a mix of names - my boy (although he is a pet, my first aussie and my first pedigree dog) Is Sparky, 'Comeby Smoke And Water' and my girl Peach (my first showdog) is 'Tuscamada Peaches N Cream'

Any suggestions will be most welcome, anything else you want to know, just ask!

You really want something that reflects YOU, or how you want to develop your breed(s). The shorter the better ('cos you can attach longer names to it). Some people use names (e.g. names of their two children squashed together) or place names (twisted version of where they are living). AS you already know, some will use a mix of their current dog's names.Others use a word from their non-English speaking background. Some make up a word out of whole cloth.

So if you want us to suggest something, we will need a bit more background to make it relevant to you. Describe yourself in 25 words or less!!!!!

You will need about half-a-dozen suggestions, you won't always get your first choice.

I went through this recently. Firstly I decided what I didn't want.....I knew I didn't want a composite of names, and I especially didn't want peoples names.

Then I worked out what I did want.....something that was made up of real words, I didn't want a prefix that sounded like an invented word. And I wanted it to be easy to tack names after, so it had to be at least two syllables,

Then I wanted something about us.......either the dogs, or something else. My first choice was my first Aussie....part of his registered name, but that was rejected in favour of my second choice which was actually my equal first choice.......our address. Mainstreet. it's snappy, sounds pretty cool, it's real words, it doesn't sound made up (because it's not), it's great fun to try out with names after it....and we DO live on Mainstreet.

So start with what you don't want and make a list of things you do want.

By the way, Comeby is one of my favourite prefixes as it's a herding term, and Comeby dogs are herding dogs.

Mine is Parkeyre.

My last name is PARKer, and I was raised on the EYRE peninsula.

This links me to my childhood and home forever.

Even if I marry and move.

I love it.

The prefix I am going to use if I get into the breed I want next is a word that is very similar to my mum's Italian maiden name, and a Greek word for people who come from the region of Germany the dog originated from. Plus it is short.

My first choice for my prefix is related to the area I've lived in most of my life and not breed specific. I unfortunately didn't get it.

I got my 2nd choice, which was breed specific. I do like the prefix though.

Dug myself in a hole? Possibly, but I figure if I wanted to branch out and breed another breed I can apply for another prefix and let my original one lapse.

I had the longest list when I first started thinking about it.

I tried so many different things but it was hard, one day I liked something breed specific, other days something totally random....

But one day I bought a CD, looked at the title and thought that would be an awesome Prefix!

It reflected my heritage and my love of music so it's really quite personal.

and I dont mean to "hijack" a thread but have always wondered about a few things in regards to prefix names..

What would make a prefix name get rejected upon application? (apart from it already being used of course)

I often hear or people not getting their first or second preference so couldnt help but wonder.

And someone above mentioned the shorter the better...may I ask why?

Its not like I need a prefix name myself anytime soon (or ever maybe) but couldn't help but wonder.

For ideas sake, I believe these were my preferences:

LEEMA (which I got - "Lee" is my middle name, "MA" comes from "Matchstick", a nickname I had. This has long been my online identity.)

LEEMAH (just different spelling)

TWIO (from my first dog, who was called Wilwyn The Wait Is Over... First initials of his name.)

TWID (long story, but related to TWIO)

MACD (my first dog's pet name was "MacDogald")

MACDOG (didn't really like this, but same as above)

CHAIR

Everyone always says to me, "What if you got Chair?!" I think that would be hilarious. And I actually really like Overalls... I think I'll name a dog that one day.

I really didn't want anything breed specific. It is very conceivable that I will not only have border terriers forever-and-ever, so having a name that reflected me was more important. I also chose a neutral web address (leemakennels) instead of a breed specific one (leemaborders), even though it does sound a little commercialised.

Prefixes get rejected because they are the same or similar to someone else's and that is why so many are composite words. So many normal words, place names, etc are already taken. Also the name cannot be anything that can be considered offensive.

Keeping the prefix as short as possible makes naming puppies much easier. We used to only be able to have 24 characters and spaces in a dogs name, including the prefix and the space after it. This has now been increased to 30 characters and spaces but it is still really frustrating to think of a great puppy name and find it won't fit, so the more characters you have to play with the better. My prefix is 10 letters but if I had my time over again I would have made it just the first 6 letters, because there have been several names I couldn't use over the years. The more puppies you breed, the harder it gets to come up with unique names that fit in with your prefix. Having 14 or 15 characters in the prefix doesn't leave much room for names after it.

And one last tip. Don't make a prefix gender specific. I heard about someone that once registered "Princess" as their prefix, never considering that they would have male puppies to name as well as female.

Peachykeen is a US Border Collie prefix.

I worked out key points about the breed or words that I think of when I think of the breed and then played with google translator In my case I mostly looked at Gaelic and Celtic words due to that being the area they originated from.

Words that I played about with were versatile, agile, stealth (known for stealth like movement), faithful, friend, loyal. I also looked at names associated with places around the Scottish border regions.

This is what list looked like:

1. Talannach – variation on Talainne Gaelic versatile/able/talented

2. Ildana – gaelic for versatile/master of all

3. Reiver –gaelic for rivers in the border regions

4. Ildanach – gaelic, versatile/able/master of all. Variation of ildana

5. Ancith – gaelic, eager

6. Faili – Gaelic for stealth

7. Alsidige – Danish for versatile

8. Teliesh – Mum and Dads prefix (they used to breed shelties 30 years ago so I thought it woudl be nice to include on the list and I have often used it for online names and email addresses)

In the end I had Ildanach first as the versatility of the breed is something that is important to me and I come from a background of participating in a wide range of sports and had the only dog at the first border collie nationals to place in all the performance disciplines on offer. So to me it reflected my bachground as well as what I value in the breed.

These are some others I had on my list

Cliste – Gaelic for intelligent

Laidir – Gaelic for strong, powerful

Daicheil – Gaelic for graceful

Dileas – loyal

Ailte – Gaelic, agile/quick/clever

Caraid – Gaelic for friend

Diomhair – stealth/quiet/secretive

Ceile – Gaelic, partner

Good luck. It took me ages to come up with anything but once I started on the keyword and google translator idea I had a list within an hour. I then sent it around to a few people whose opinions I trust and got them to have some input as well.

Some bush flavoured ideas:

Friend always thought of fantastic names for his work horses:

View, Bushells, Quartpot, SouthernCross, Mulga Mist, Breeze, Smoko,

River system names - what is the name of your catchment? My friend used these to name his dogs:

Warrego, Barcoo, Roper, Paroo, Bollon.

Native grasses and plants: Buffel, Flinders, Mitchel, Wattle, Gidgea.

Where do you live? Get a good local geographical map and look at the names of things. Something might jump out as a good name. It's nice if it is somehow relevant to you.

Many dogs / horses in the bush are named as per where / who they came from:

Burleigh, Saxby, Beckman,

What is your ideaology? Are you breeding for colour (red dust) (silver moon), temperament (meander, take a spell), working ability (swift, Eye, balance up), show (sunburnt, far horizons)

Just some ideas. Look up some poetry that you like.

going to agree with don't necessarily choose something breed specific...

I chose my prefix based on location of the breeds origin...

I didn't get my first choice, which was Belwood - which was the name of a temple not far from where the breed developer lived

My other choices were all linked around that "Belwood"...

I ended up with i think my 3rd or 4th choice, Belbracon - Bel from Belwood and Bracon from Bracken, a common ground cover that setters would work over.

Who knew I'd end up with my first litter being a Weimaraner litter? It sounds ok, i guess, but it doesn't suit a weim like it suits an English setter!!

Our prefix was the 30th one we submitted so obviously not a favourite However, I just couldn't imagine anything else now.

Mine was my 10th pick - Dawnus - welsh meaning gifted, talented, capable etc

I love it too. Sparkle showed amazing instinct when we took him for his first herding clinic.

We won't ever be breeding Pointers, we have a boy and that is MORE than enough, he is a pain in the butt! (Sorry Doodle!)
