Parvo

There's tonnes of parvo cases all over Brisbane..

Time to be extra vigilent with where your dogs go and who they are socialising with.

+1

We have had 3 cases in recently and we very rarely see Parvo in our area.

Can anyone confirm that these cases are in known vaccinated dogs.

The cases I have seen personally (3 in the past few weeks) have all been un-vaccinated puppies less than 4 months of age.

Thank you for your reply Miss B.

I would have thought that this may apply to un vaccinated dogs.

Most pups vaccinated at around 8 weeks with a reliable vaccine I believe would have a good immunity to this dreaded disease.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thats not completely true...vaccines are not 100%...

Have also seen cases of parvo in older dogs that were not vaccinated after their puppy series (I believe the booster at a year of age is a must), also cases in puppies that have had 2 vaccs but not the third.

A lot of vaccines just reduce the severity of the disease not the actual occurrence of it such as kennel cough (canine), strangles (equine), EHV (equine) ect. I think there are some which stop the occurrence of the disease such as tetanus (equine).

Quoted from a vet website in relation to the parvo virus "Vaccination is the best option. Dogs that come into contact with large amounts of the virus may still become infected but the vaccination will reduce the severity and allow the dog to have a good chance of survival."

Was at the emergency vets at Springwood over the easter break and we were chatting about pups and I was told of many cases of Parvo, dozens I was told, and other nasty things around at the moment. Vacination is not a 100% garentee but will reduce severity if they do happen to pick up the bugs.

I think I would be very carefull with young pups ATM even if they have been vacinated.

Why do people have a fear of Parvo when their dogs are vaccinated ?.

If you are vaccinated against Rubella you can't catch it, the same with Parvo.

This is why we vaccinate.

Actually you can, it is possible for your immune system to 'forget' about the antibodies your body produces when you have a vaccine (or the disease), especially if you have the vaccine/disease very young

I had the rubella vaccine as a baby, when I was 8 I caught it, I got revaccinated in the school program at 14. This year I had to get a blood test to show if I had antibodies for rubella for work...surprisingly I did, but after being exposed to it 3 times in my youth Id hope I am immune lol

Yes but Missymoo we know about Hef, but he is the exception to the rule. :p

The average run of the mill dog when vaccinated does not usually catch Parvo or die from it.

You and Hef were unfortunately the exception to the rule.

If you have had a puppy die from parvo how long before you can get another pup. I friend of my sons, recently had his 8 wo pup die and now is talking about getting another. Need some facts to give him so it doesnt happen again
