Poison Posted January 30, 2012 Share Posted January 30, 2012 I just want everyone's opinion on what i should do...if anything. My older brother got a dog about a year, maybe a year and a half ago. Him and his girlfriend had the dog for a few months and have since decided theres no place for it at their house, so its been dumped at my parents! The dog has never been socialised or trained and is just basically neglected.. (although they were considerate enough to arrange for him to be clipped last week by a mobile groomer!) My parents arent really dog people and other then feeding him and walking him 3-4 times a week.. its really left by itself. A few weeks ago during a conversation with my brother he mentioned that he wanted to breed with this dog! I scolded him and told him how irresponsible it was etc.. and he quietened down, so i thought my message got across to him. unfortunately not! just the other week he mentioned it again.. so... im in 2 minds.. im tempted to take it to the vets and have it desexed myself!! i really think the dog should be rehomed.. i dont know what to do.. but i feel like i have to do something... megan_ Posted January 30, 2012 Share Posted January 30, 2012 pretty sure the vet will check the microchip first, realise you aren't the owner and then not desex - I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to operate on dogs brought in by people who don't actually own the dog. I just had my chow desexed and undergo a bout of hotspots - so im not in a position to pay for him to be desexed. My parents will have to pay for this.. Plus they will have to look after him following the procedure so they'll definitely know. Do you think i should look into getting him rehomed? is this a possibility? I have a young relative who had the same idea, she had 2 chi's, one boy, one girl.. of course before the girl was one she was preggers.. they were so excited and expected me to be. My prediction came true, the dog was far too small to deliver the babies and ended up in labour at 10pm on a public holiday.. A C section was required to save 2 of the 3 pups and Mum. I'm told the bill was huge. After that they came to their senses and had her desexed. Feel free to share their experience if it helps them realise breeding is not all smooth sailing. Speak to your parents first about getting him desexed and talk to them about the possibility of rehomeing. See how they feel about it. They may be forming an attachment to the dog, the fact that they walk it 3-4 times a week is showing that they are willing to spend sometime with him. This could excalate. Since he is able to stay at your parents for now, you are not under any pressure to find him the best of homes and can do so with the utmost of thought and research. If so perhaps your parents could talk to your brother about doing the responsible thing and allowing this dog to find a home where it would be wanted and cared for. If they can get him to agree - perhaps by demanding financial compensation for caring for the dog - you could perhaps contact a rescue group and discuss options. My thoughts are that you talk to your parents and convince them that the dog needs to be desexed asap. Have your parents taken the dog to a vet? If so and the dog has been living with your parents for some considerable time, the vet may be able to overlook difference in ownership if the dog is microchipped to your brother. If the dog isn't microchipped: "Possession is 9/10ths of the Law". :) Keep the faith, Poison, and don't wait for another litter of dogs to be pound fodder. The ones that then carry on as if the dog is still their own make me feel nauseous. Desex the dog, chip it, and make a family decision about the dog without consulting your selfish brother. Work out whether the dog is to be owned and kept properly by you or your parents, or whether you need to prepare it for rehoming. Unless your brother comes up with some cash to cover every day your parents have kept the dog and to cover all other expenses, he should be told to go away and mind his own business. I would not be getting involved in this. If you do talk to your parents and do get the dog desexed you could be creating a much worse issue. The only person that can desex the dog or arrange a rehome would be the legal owner. Perhaps get the dog signed over to your parents first. but don't do anything until the dog is in either yours or your parents name. Frustrating as it may be but do you really what to be accused of theft (if you rehome). Not too sure what you would be guilty of if you desex a dog that is not legally yours. Either way it could create a massive disruption to your family. Possession is not 9/10ths of the law by the way. If you happen to be renting a property and leave stuff behind when you move out, the landlord can't just get rid of your stuff even though it is in their possession. Even though the property can be deemed as abandoned. as for ownership your brother really only has to provide evidence of ownership in a court of law. This can be vets Vaccination papers. If your brother can provide these then you do not have any legal standing in what happens to the dog. This could be very messy with no real winners. So what does your brother want to breed him for? do they plan on keeping a puppy and repeating the cycle again? or is it soley for the money. Do your parents interact with the dog at all? if not I would be 1) desexing and rehoming the poor little buggar myself or 2) contacting a rescue who may be able to help.
