On Antibiotic For A Month

Hi all,

My little shih tzu of 11 months is having tonsillitis since 3 weeks ago and has been under antibiotics for that long. She was put under anaesthetic last week so that the vet could check her throat out. Came out confirmed with a very inflamed and pus tonsils, stinky breath (literally can stink the whole room) eek1.gif ... given more antibiotics to tame it down.

We revisit the vet yesterday and Lexie is getting slightly better. Meaning the antibiotics are working on her. Less stinky breath (only can smell it if you are face to face with her), less inflamed and less pus though not better than what we would like it to be.

So, vet gave us a month's course of antibiotics to heal it.

Question here is what can I give Lexie, good balance of food maybe to balance up her diet as she would be under antibiotics for a month frown.gif

Don't want it to create new problems in her body. I did asked for probiotic but vet said it's not recommended as it may contradict with the antibiotics. confused.gif

Any advise would be much appreciated! smile.gif

As I understand it, there's no point giving her probiotics now as the antibiotics will just kill them off anyway. As Persephone has said - fresh food diet, nothing artificial and she should be OK. Once the problem is solved then a short course of probiotics may well be a good idea.

is your vet taking them out ? It's common place with Greyhounds and imporves the quality of a dogs life ten fold

the vet was planning to refer to specialist who would take it out, but because she is getting on well with the meds, so she wants to put her on it to heal it .. She explained that the specialist will go through the same thing as well. And if her condition worsen or if it re-occurs .. then will definitely refer to specialist . Should I request for it? Demand for it? confused.gif

Yep our vet would have taken them out

Is that safe while they are so infected though?

routinely done with Greyhounds, otherwise the animal remains chronically sick.

Id give the AB's a week and have the dog booked in to have them removed.

other than the inflamed, swollen & pus tonsils, she is eating and active as usual.. No fever except for her gagging reflex when she yawns..

I am thinking in this case, she is not chronically ill hence the vet is making sure she heals from it before going forward to remove it? confused.gif

not sure where you are located but I would get in touch with a vet that specialises in Greyhounds, there's quite a few around and they don't muck about with tonsils, they take them straight out.

I'm at chatswood, nsw.

Would have to find out the vets that specialist in Greyhounds nearby me soon

I'd just stand my ground and say take them out, you're the client. No way I'd let my dog suffer for over a month when there is an easy fix.

I need to pressure the vet to refer to specialist. I'm quite annoyed how she kept putting her on antibiotics since she is having some good result.

So very frustrating.

I would at least seek another opinion from a different vet practice. Also how are the antibiotics being administered? An injection may be more effective than tablets.

Yes I'm tempted to seek another vet's advice but am not sure how our pet insurance will be able to let us claim from both sides. Might give pet plan a call on Monday before doing it.

It's just tablets. Metrogyl quarter tablet twice daily & anti robe twice daily.
