For All The Unethical (But Responsible) Dog Owners ...
JulesP replied to Willem's topic in General Dog Discussion
Having just dealt with pyometra, my position on de-sexing has changed a bit. I would always de-sex now. Pyometra is frigging nasty. I have had no problems with any de-sexed animal - cats, dogs & horses oh and a steer! -

Jolly good. Hope you never have to deal with pyometra. -
If her liver is a bit dodgy then the GA to do the biopsy would have knocked her around a bit. Hopefully she is feeling better soon and that the results come back with nothing serious.

In your experience how has a stand for exam helped your agility performance? -
Get your son to go get some tinned L/D from the vets teekay. Sick livers really need a rest and high digestible protein or toxins could start to build up. Sorry this is happening and extra sorry it is whilst you are away.

You are also up for higher penalties if your 'attack trained' dog chomps someone.

I thought it was 'illegal' in Victoria. I found this http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/pets/domestic-animal-businesses/training-establishments/dog-training-establishments-things-you-should-know Protection training Protection training is defined as training a dog to attack people or animals and includes the training of a dog to attack a human wearing padded protective clothing for any purpose including sport. It is not considered appropriate for a member of the community who is not a licenced security guard to have access to an attack trained dog and this is reflected in the strict provisions of the Domestic Animals Act. Dogs that have received this type of training will be declared as a dangerous dog by a Council. Licensed security guards Licensed security guards registered under the Private Agents Act 1966 are the only persons eligible to have their dogs trained as Protection Dogs, or to be trained in Protection Training. Proof of Security Licence must be shown to the training establishment prior to commencement of Protection Training. No member of the public may be trained in protection training unless the above pre-requisites are complied with. Eligible dogs Cartoon of a bulldog wearing a guard dog sign. The minimum age of a dog before protection training is allowed is 12 months. Only recognised guarding breeds of the large variety and cross breeds of these, are allowed to be trained in protection training. These breeds are: German Shepherd; Rottweiler; Doberman; Other breeds recognised by the VCA as large guarding breeds. Council notification An owner must notify the appropriate municipality immediately when attack training has commenced. Dangerous dogs Dogs that have been trained to attack are dangerous dogs, and owners will be required to adhere to prescribed conditions (contact your council for details). This includes clear identification of the dog and methods of restraint that will protect the community.

It was fairly late  I've been not feeding them when I first get up but letting them have a cruise around the garden for a while. It seems to be helping with her eating.

This bugs me. Is the same at my school. You don't pass that and you just don't pass and can't go on to do the other fun stuff. Happened to a friend of mine that wanted to do agility. -
And thank you to everyone that held my hand through this latest incident!

Amber is going pretty well. A tad fussy with food still but she actually barked me today to get up and feed her! She just doesn't eat a heap at one meal. It is weird having a dog that doesn't just scoff whatever you give them. She might have been fussy even without the shunts, dunno. Problem is she has no excess fat so you can't play hardball with her. She has to eat or she gets sick.

Didn't think it would be a good idea to vaccinate a dog with health problems full stop? Also not good for a dog with health problems to catch something nasty when you have limited treatment options! it is a matter of weighing up the lesser evil.

Could also be portal hypertension, which does cause nose bleeds in people, not sure about dogs. Does she also have fluid in her belly?

Liver issues do cause blood clotting problems but the vet tested for that.

Crow Snatches Puppy From Kilsyth Backyard, Owner Collapses With Shock
JulesP replied to Two Best Dogs!'s topic in In The News
Not far away though: if you do a bushwalk on the hill behind Browns Road (still in Montrose) there are plenty in the forest. They certainly came down into gardens around us. But as Kirty said, "no goannas around here", and yes it would be unusual. Yes I've met Goannas (very large ones) in the hills whilst riding my horse. It is a totally different area to the area of Kilsyth were the puppy was taken. -

(Is that true? Can't say I've noticed if it is but I'm an interstate immigrant ;) ) Don't think it is thing. Just most people wouldn't know the difference. As a Pommy I am a bit fascinated by the different birds and tend to look them up in a book or internet so I know what they are. -

Do you know your local 24/7 emergency vets Swain? Probably a good thing to know. Or even vets open on a Sunday. I had to call around the other Sunday to find a vet.

Kibble With Novel Protein Suggestions?
JulesP replied to fortam's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It is annoying that they put other proteins in with 'different' protein feeds. I picked up heaps of samples at the Dog Lovers show and they all contain other proteins as well as the main one. Having the same issue with one of my dogs. Just constant low grade ear issues. Which is why I picked up the samples. And despite explaining to the reps what I wanted all the samples have chicken, beef or lamb in them!! I did get some of the Prime rolls and they have gone down very well. I was very ick about the crocodile but it wasn't smelly at all. I (well the dog) tried the crocodile barf and the roo rolls. A 2kg roll has lasted 4 days btw. My dog is a good doer though but I find you don't have to feed a massive amount of these rolls. I spoke to the Zwipeak reps. You only feed a small amount of the product. I would be slightly concerned about protein levels with it though. My very fussy dog thinks it is amazing. Unfortunately she needs low protein and can't have much of it! Feeding dogs is currently driving me nuts! -

Currawongs are solitary but the news article said that she heard and saw multiple crows. I have seen crows/ravens pick up field rats and baby bunnies and fly them back to the nest, presumably to feed babies or maybe just to keep away from non-family crows. No one told my currawongs they are solitary as there are normally about 5 eating on the magnolia tree at a time. -

I'm the next burb over and get lots of Currawongs here. They could easily be mistaken for a crow and do kill little critters.
