  1. It would be very, very rare for me to withhold a reward as I pay any try. The dog would pretty much have to piss off to not get a reward. Then how does the dog know that the latest try was further from your goal than the others he/she had offered you? If the tries were moving away from the goal then I would be looking at what I was doing wrong. The degree of reward varies. It would be pretty picky to say it was a negative punishment to give only one bit of cheese and not two.

  3. I've made liver cake a couple of times. Needs some sort of flour though. If you google liver cake there are lots of recipes.
  4. ^ ^ ^ This is me, exactly! Same here! I'm not in any frustratingly bad groups anymore and it's so much nicer to just be in sensible, friendly and informative groups. Still see a lot of stuff in my newsfeed that makes me shake my head though. Unfollow and block!! Sometimes you need to block if you have friends that are commenting in the annoying group/page.
  5. I would use Secret in her kennel name and use Inky as her pet name. Just feel that Inky is easier to yell.
  6. I'm not in many dog groups as they annoy me too much. I have them set to not show in my feed too. The only one I don't mind is the sable border collie group and that one is just nice photos of border collies.
  7. Haven't noticed any difference between the boys and girls in bone burying. None of mine have ever buried fresh food. They hide bits of dead possum though! Poppy (girl) digs big holes to sleep in. Amber (girl) has also dug holes during phantom pregnancies. Both male border collies also did random digging. My darling Fern never did anything norty, ever
  8. No personal experience with this. Can she moved to a different vets now? Or does she still need 24/7 care? Maybe give your normal vet a call. Goodluck with her and I hope she gets better soon.
  9. How often do judges withhold points? I guess it is similar to a horse judge not awarding a first place or champion. It didn't happen very often. In 10 years of stewarding I only had a judge do it once and can only recall one other time were I saw it happen.
  10. ...have a look at post #59 from TF: ...it is part of the dog's training to charge at people in confined spaces...if the dog is left to make his own choice because he can't hear the handler properly due to the helicopter noise it is one option that he just does what he is trained to do...she made herself a decoy ... The handler made her a decoy. But thanks so much for sharing your immense wisdom and knowledge about dog training. ...stop thinking that everyone who knows a little bit more than you is an expert :D - he/she might have just done a little bit more reading about dog training instead of reading about the latest fashion news :D Thank you again for setting me straight. We are sooo lucky to have you here.

  12. The trainers and handlers obviously thought it was ok to do.
  13. I don't rug because they have thick coats. I have changed their sleeping arrangement to the laundry room now though. During summer they are out in their 'bedroom' which is a totally enclosed verandah. During the day they have free access to that room. If the weather is really vile they ask to come inside but they only want to stay in until the weather passes. I have water proof coats with no fill for rainy walking.
  14. Well to start with the crap about her making police men take off prong collars etc is obviously untrue. I counted a couple in the short clip she has up promoting her new show. Which does look interesting. She has said she doesn't train police dogs and that she wasn't there to train them on that day. I fail to see how her agreeing to sit in a helicopter was her screwing up.
  15. Yeah because us wimmins only care about what dog trainers are wearing....
  16. And why would anyone be gloating that someone got bitten? I'm not a CM fan but I wouldn't want to see him chomped.
  17. I don't know all the facts behind that video either, but you can't in good conscience recommend rehoming for a dog with a bite history. If you have a dog that bites, your only options are to keep the dog and get help and lots of management, or euthanasia. The family in that clip said they wanted to rehome the dog. Oh, I agree completely. The only time I'm okay with rehoming a dog with a bite history is if it's to an experienced trainer who's willing to take the dog on to rehabilitate it, and that would be pretty rare. If the family isn't willing to work with the dog, and if their child was genuinely at risk I wouldn't expect them to, then I don't know that there are any alternatives to euthanasia. If the bite incident wasn't serious or was provoked by something like a kid pulling the dog's ears etc.., then I think a good trainer should at least discuss rehabilitation and management with the owners, rather than saying the only option is to euthanise. But again, I don't know the background to this clip and was just posting it as confirmation that she does recommend euthanasia, not as a judgement on whether it was the correct advice for this situation. It wasn't just a bite history. From memory the dog turned into cujo at the drop of a hat. Perfectly fine one minute and then totally nutso the next. But people are tying to make out that she suggests killing dogs if her positive training methods didn't work. I have fairly fond memories of the show and I certainly would not have those memories if she was going around telling people to kill dogs. I haven't made it through a CM show for instance.
  18. as a start: she called herself a 'bystander'. Obviously it is not convenient to admit mistakes, but not taking responsibility by claiming just to be a bystander is IMO pretty shabby...for me a bystander is someone not directly involved in the setup, e.g. the owner of the pig in the CM incident, however, the moment I'm with a dog squashed in a helicopter as part of an exercise I'm not a bystander anymore but part of the setup. Thus it is also her duty of care to evaluate potential risks. If all the 'experts' involved in this incident would have taken 5 minutes for a simple risk assessment they would have picked up that the helicopter noise and the turbulences might make it impossible for the dog to hear the commands. The handler released the dog, the dog unable to hear the clue clearly made the choice - seeing a target in front of him - that he was sent to attack... and of course he did. They all let the dog down, and as all involved - she and the handler - are somehow experienced (if you look on her site she even runs some programs for avoiding dog bites!!!!) the reason for the incident was mainly grossly negligence. We are so lucky that we have such an experienced trainer like you to tell us wimmins how things are.
  19. Actually I do remember that dog. It was a Cocker that looked to me like it had cocker rage.
  20. Yes - I buy the smaller ones as fussy bum goes off it after its been open "too long". Fortunately for me I can only get the 3kg bags over here. Amber too. I get glared at. We just stop eating.... we can go up to 4 days before Mumsy gives in. Good to know who's boss eh? Last time we missed a meal we ended up at the emergency vets, so can't be skipping meals here!. She spits it out too. Took me a while to work out that the issue was when the bag was getting near the end. She isn't an enthusiastic eater at all, except she likes her tinned l/d.
  21. What did she actually do wrong? Trust the handlers and trainers when she shouldn't have? If handlers and trainers told me it was safe to sit in the helicopter I probably would have believed them too. I might have then looked at the revved up police dog and thought 'oh shit' but it would have been too late then. She isn't a police dog trainer. From watching her shows (and I did watch quite a lot) I can't even recall a heap of aggressive dog problems. It was things like dog pulling on the lead or counter surfing. Just pet problem stuff. I can't remember her ever saying that a dog should be put down I quite liked her and her boots  Oh and she had her own dog training business before the TV show.

  23. I just buy the small bags as I like it to be fresh. I was buying small bags of the super premium kibble at $35+ a bag so my wallet is rather happy with $15!
  24. I feed the VIP too. It does seem to be the kibble mine do best on. Last time I switched to a more expensive brand out of the guilts there was a noticeable drop in coat condition and Poppy got itchy ears even though the new food was also gran free.
