  1. Watching that reminded me of Hamlet ..with a Cocker mum ..he was mostly 'nose' ..and would quarter an area really well , with absolutely no training ...
  2. Oh .. and live baiting of greyhounds is not for the purpose of culling ferals ..it's to make dogs run for money . Horrible way to do it. None of it is "right" really ...
  3. Hmmm ... there are pig hunters..and there are D!ckheads Some piggers have no compassion ...for the pigs, or their dogs. Around here , pups are just taken out on hunts with the adults .... let in on the less dangerous bits . Our Koolies were certainly never trained on piglets ..YUK. ..They just did it .. they knew where the safe spots were .They were never hurt, neither did they do it regularly - but if a pig popped up during sheepwork - it was caught & despatched . My Kieran was a pig dog prospect , dumped because he was scared... ( thankfully)
  4. SARS, yes,it is painful, and stressful, but not much else can be done where firearms cannot be used. I believe it is also 'preferable' to the agonising death from 1080, or to being live trapped, then killed. Live trapping is terribly stressful for any wild animal, pigs especially. I won't go into detail. These animals are wonderful in their own right, they are not where they belong, though.
  5. wise move . Not pleasant at all. I really dislike folks who make death into their entertainment .
  6. in mine ? yep ! looking a bit lost ;)
  7. I THINK it's a very different scenario ... usually , if pig hunting is done correctly .. dogs grab the pig by the ears ..and hold it until the hunter dispatches it quickly and cleanly with a knife. THis form of pig hunting is widely carried out in areas where firearms are not permitted - yes, and also by hoons , sadly . A couple of our Koolies were very clinical and efficient at holding strongly , way back when we were much younger , and pigs were a problem .
  8. Hmmm.. I THINK .. yes, it may well cost that much to obtain/train a dog for a specific purpose , but the organisation providing the dog covers that cost .. which they get from donations , etc. AFAIK recipients of a trained dog do not pay . It would be fantastic if that amount was raised , to donate as a lump sum to whichever organisation they choose !!
  9. @Roova the pelican flock/s appear for a couple of months in Winter ..not much during the rest of the year They do look nice .
  10. ..because our pets are not part of our food intake ? Fipronil is not licensed for food destined for human consumption...therefore , if found , that food must be disposed of. It is an insecticide ..and human food shouldn't have insecticides therein ... ?
  11. pelicans drying off on the sandbar ...
  12. Lovely portraits, teekay!! :D
  13. ..Such a magic time - so much to see and enjoy in your comfy camper Thank you for sharing your wonderful photos
  14. oh yes!! This is an important thing for pups (human kids too) .. the fact that we can sit & watch ..that everything moves around us ..that we don't have to be walking for the objects/humans in our vicinity to change ..that often we don't NEED to walk away/run away -- the odd/scary stuff will move away all by itself , OR we will be there , secure, long enough to get used to whatever smell/sound/sight has made us worry a bit .
  15. Sounds as if you both are doing really well Psst.. we need a photo or three ;)
  16. I do not think a puppy should be subjected to a head halter .... martingales are great
  17. That bolded bit terrifies me .. balcony walls I know are only around 4 ft high ...even 5 ft .. still way too low . A dog may well hear owners , or another dog ... & clamber up to have a look ... *shiver*
  18. Welcome What a cute puppy..an ESS . The best way to help with a pulling puppy ? Get some TRAINING , so You know WHY puppy pulls, and how to best communicate and teach puppy . Communication is NOT using a physical restraint ... have a look at these video- and I will give you a LINK to an excellent person with whom to speak CLICK Also @The Spotted Devil, a DOLer , could be a help as well.
  19. that sounds a description of a very lonely and sad dog . What breed is your dog ? I hope the balcony is well fenced - often dogs will try & climb over the wall.... to a bad ending . Where do you walk your dog, and for how long every day ? Does she enjoy her walks ? dogs are not people ..but think of this . YOU are living in a suburb which is interesting , has shops, a yard for you, good internet , and lots to see. YOU are moved to a suburb with NO internet , only office buildings, no shops, no public transport, and you can only see & smell car parks and bare walls. I think your family are maybe not BAD owners, but owners who don't understand what dogs really need to keep them happy and settled . have a think about if it's fair to everyone , this dog in the apartment ? Is it fair to neighbours, the noise? is it fair to the dog , the isolation, the lack of company and the lack of stimulation ..?
  20. ...he, he, he ...here am I , imagining a little old dog floating around the house , under a collection of bright balloons......
  21. yes indeed ... the other day I used the RFDS services , as I was not well enough to drive to town ( 90km) & see my own doctor ... I then was able to use A/B's from our locked chest of medicines ...This service is an oldish one , but now modernised .. phone/computer video appointments - without which , many folks would be very ill indeed! To have a DR available 24/7 ..and some serious medications has helped us a couple of times in emergency situations as well. back in our Grandparents' time ..it was be tough & hope someone knew something ..or die....
  22. That sounds a much better plan ..ESPECIALLY the relaxing on weaning - let them pretty much do it themselves ... This post might be helpful for you CLICK HERE remember , too , that parvo can not be killed by ordinary disinfectants ..it needs bleach , or the wonderful product, F10 , or other specific ones. bet your girl enjoyed her session of grooming
