  1. I would certainly let the breeder know, they need to if they are to avoid reproducing the problem. Whether I would seek a refund would depend on a number of things. Is there a contract with the breeder and if so what does it say about health guarantees? Is this a problem the breeder should reasonably have screened for, or is it something out of the blue? Sometimes things go wrong with animals that could not have been foreseen. I would only ever sell a dog as show/breeding ‘potential’, no guarantees as too much can do wrong even in a promising puppy. But if the breeder promised it was breeding quality that changes things a bit. I would also get a second opinion on the condition.
  2. I am surprised they can do it in the US and UK. While there are DNA schemes for health screening in those countries there are no kennel control obligations to ‘bank pedigree lines’ that I am aware of except the requirement to DNA profile popular sires and imported dogs in the US. Perhaps it is a Golden Retriever thing. If the capacity did exist and that bloodline existed in those countries you’d just post them the Australian sample, plenty of us use overseas laboratories. I dont think there is any way to do it here. DNA parentage profiling is common but not what you want. i just had a late thought- UC Davis in the US run a canine genetic diversity research project and Golden Retrivers are one of the breeds that have been assessed. I assume you know that if you are a Golden Retriever breeder. But if not contacting them might be your best bet, at least they will know what is possible. I have sent them samples for my breed’s genetic survey and it is an easy process. They aim to indentify all genetic diversity within a breed worldwide to better inform breeding decisions, it requires 100-200 or more samples from different populations.
  3. A more experienced groomer will get them shorter. But as she is only a small dog you can just round off the sharp edges the groomer is leaving with a professional quality human nail file if you want. I use clippers and then a dremal with a sanding band to smooth and shape. I have big dogs.
  4. In my breed there are all sorts of ‘show’ breeders but enough these days put colour in perspective and focus on more essentials traits for me to feel OK about the preservation of the breed. Bigger structural issues affecting society and dog ownership might bring the breed undone, but not the colour or fashion.
  5. There are some said to be here, in hunting circles, and probably many claimed to be that aren’t. If anyone wanted to get the breed ANKC registered it would not be hard if it is already accepted by the AKC, especially as that is the country of origin.
  6. I think it just means expressions of interest are sought. Possibly being used to dodge regulations requiring breeder numbers or microchip numbers being included in ads, whichever the rule is in the relevant state. They can claim it isn’t a sale add, just looking for expressions of interest - just my cynical speculation, lol.
  7. He sounds a bit bored and understimulated to me. So he is making his own fun. I’d start trick training, taking walks in new locations, and generally being a bit more out and about. He is young, he needs to do stuff and exercise his mind as well as his body. Just my opinion.
  8. I am so sorry. She looks gorgeous.
  9. Run free Tuppence, you are a good girl
  10. I put a sprinkler on to cool the dogs, next thing one of the youngsters has it in his mouth and is bringing it to me, I got soaked, lol.
  11. Just noticed this update online. The link with the food has been statistically confirmed it seems. https://phys.org/news/2018-12-megaesophagus-cases-dogs-linked-pet.html?fbclid=IwAR3mbkqdD6E7sFIlq2DBWk1TdVy68mNkGJvOrlGf-DThXZV0Ok9ldsF7E0Y#jCp
  12. The OP has said the dog is 21.6kg at 5 months which sounds too light to me to be a pure bred BM. But regardless 15 kms is too far in a day, I would do a third of that and spend the rest of the time on training, brain games and enrichment. If the dog is a bullmastiff those growth plates are far from being closed and being run is not good
  13. So those are just photos you found on line, not the actual dog? The colour is potentially easy, although without a photo there is only guessing. All yellow labs (and also all golden retrievers if that is what you meant) are ee ‘recessive red/ee yellow’ which masks the expression of other colours including black and sable, the kelpie just had to be carrying one e gene even if he was a different colour himself to give ee cream. Or it could just be sable with low intensity of pheomelanin. It is not an uncommon colour in mix breeds. But if you are curious try one of the laboratories that claim to test breed mix, the tests are pretty cheap. Although Dingos found close to farm land aren’t pure dingos these days, so much dog in them that I don’t know how a mix would test.
  14. Usually when older puppies are discounted it is because the breeder is having trouble placing them, that is very unlikely for Cavaliers. At 14 months he is still young but has passed the hard work months of puppyhood and adolescence, has had his vaccinations and will be desexed, and has probably been well socialised if he was a potential keeper. Easily worth as much as a puppy.
  15. Houndstoothchic in the UK also make suits. She does lovely work.
  16. Panagenics is my main shampoo and conditioner. Sometimes Isle of Dogs White EPO for the white dogs. Chris Christensen is good, but I find their white shampoo too harsh and drying. I like their 20 mm pin brushes or Bass brass pin brushes. Greyhound brand combs.
  17. If your dog is behaving as you want and is happy about it you don’t need to follow anyone else’s methodology. Well except maybe for class and competition stuff, but just find a trainer or club that suits you so there is no clash. I think you already know that. The only thing I worry about missing at a young age is exposure to new things. That builds neural pathways in the brain and positive associations that are easier to build when the brain is still developing. Behaviours can be taught whenever you need them if the dog is well adjusted and has learnt to be operant.
  18. You will find plenty of people who let their dog pull them over to you in vet offices, sidewalks and everywhere really. It is a PITA. Nothing much you can do about it except ask them not to which often gets met with a blank stare. And protect your dog if needed. I don’t understand your loose leash/ long leash question. Short leads can be loose. As for Rally, I know a number of people who got their first title at 6 months, which is the minimum age allowed to compete I think. Edited to add, if you think your dog is strong enough to break out of their collar, get a better quality collar. K9pro has gear they won’t break out of but any quality equipment should do.
  19. I don’t see that where I show.
  20. Something to try, when you bring her in turn around and take her straight back out again. For some reason that is when some of them go. Keep a handful of treats in your pocket and give her a treat when she goes outside. Stop telling her off, as you recognise yourself attention can be rewarding even if it is meant negatively. Lots of attention for going outside.
  21. That she is a breeder of Cavalier King Charles is kind of irrelevant, she could be very good at that but not great on behaviour of spitz and working breeds. Or she could just be a blowhard, they crop up in any walk of life. When bitches fight they often hold grudges more than males do and some types of dogs have reputations for not getting along because of their different behavioural traits. But that doesn’t mean your girls won’t be friends for life. Just deal with the dogs in front of you and don’t get agitated because of what someone who doesn’t know you or your dogs and whose credentials you don’t know says in a one off meeting somewhere.
  22. The Dogzonline main pages have a section where registered ANKC breeders can advertise older dogs. Sometimes they are retired from breeding but quite often they just didn’t work out as show dogs or were returned to the breeder as adults for some reason and need new homes. There are are a couple listed there now. The other good option is to contact your state breed club and ask if they know of any older dogs seeking homes. https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/mature/cavalier-king-charles-spaniel.asp
  23. We would all like to think that, but dishonest people aren’t necessarily stupid, they know what to say to sound authentic. I have placed all my puppies by word of mouth without advertising as I breed that little. But I dread the day I might have to, it is a dilemma. Breeders I know due heavy due diligence, asking for copies of drivers licenses, checking on google maps, stalking face book, before letting a stranger visit. We have so much at stake.
  24. Yes but they have to be desexed, which allows them onto the Associate Register. there are exceptions for the desexing requirement for dogs on recognised working registries and a few others.
