  1. This isn't your dog & you need to back off . Sadly now this dog is more confused & the howling may result in other neighbours complaining or it digging out on the wrong side or something awful happening .
  2. I would not recommend a Std Schnauzer unless you are prepared to do alot of work . They are wonderful dogs with the right owners who respect them as the working dog they are, trained correctly great dogs. Not trained they are nightmares & very quick to out smart there owners. Owning a Std is like owning a Dobe,Rotti .Powerful breed that must be well socialized & trained . They don't do well when bored . There is one breeder in Perth & she does show ,doesn't have litters often . The most important thing is a Std is a true working dog ,they are a dog that loves jobs & using there brain ,they are commonly referred to as the dog with the Human brain & this is so true .You can not compare the 3 sizes equally ,Stds aren't big Minis & require a different lifestyle, training & owners . Stds won't tolerate non sense though ,your kids are young & stds will challenge the owners & house members the leader of the pack role so everyone needs to be on the same page . I agree don't be fooled by the relatives well trained dog ,it seems they where the right owners for the breed who have trained there Std to be a good member in society As for dogs wandering any dog will ,no different than letting one of your kids loss as a youngster & expecting it to know the rules . Minis shouldn't be fiesty although Black/Silvers are tad more on there toes within the colour range but they are territorial .
  3. The Lab people in WA are very helpful & approachable . Have you been down to shows ?? Have you looked at joining the Lab club in WA ?? As for showing bringing out the nastiness ,dog showing isn't an elite group to this behavior ,it happens every day in all walks of lifes & situations . No sport or activity is immune to it
  4. Yes they are ,they are financially set up ,breeders are offered the dogs first (and are aware of this) next in line is friends who will be the caretakers, any we now won't cope are to be put down or any elderly or assessed as not suitable are also to be PTS . We are also the caretakers of friends dogs with the same guidelines . All parties are aware . Are dogs will only be left to people dedicated to the breed, aware of the care required or rehomed with the assistance of there breeders . Not left to family . It needs to be changed often & ideally you should keep a folder of each dog ,details & any medical issues /vet .
  5. I did agility with my Grey & there is an ex racing Grey here currently competing in obedience & agility & doing well ,They excel at tracking. There are show greyhound breeders in NZ . I loved all 8 of our Greys but would never recommend them as a guard dog ,also what are the muzzling laws in NZ the one thing we found when walking our Greys who had to wear muzzles back them is people would approach to ask questions or comment .From the different breeds i have owned the public where more interested in approaching the Greys .
  6. Many breeds would suit but given she may want to show then that could narrow the choices of what will suit both , Knowing what breeds interest her would really be more helpful & give an idea of what path she is heading down . Most of the wants on her list are all about training
  7. The problem is people attend class once a week & expect the dog to suddenly become well trained & when it isn't they give up & the dog gets no where . For me class size isn't a big issue , i now some with small classes that are hopeless, boring & turn you off .If i was doing a 6 week course then i would expect strict guidelines by all in the class because its a short time to learn unless the offer another class more advanced afterwards ,Many people start "getting it" around 6 weeks & then need the class to help more & more with new behaviors. Distractions is what training is about & even when i train in the backyard ts all about distractions i don't train my dogs in quiet gives a false sense of achievement then the giant disappointment hits at class.
  8. Aloof breeds do in my opinion require a very dedicated owner .Understanding aloof & ensuring it is still socialized & managed is very important . I think you need to look at exactly what you are expecting from any dog, what temperament will best suit the environment it will be living in & the plan to live with such dog. What are must haves & what are must knots by breed nature. I would say if your not sure what you want then getting a pup in 3/4 months won't happen ,don't rush you need to meet breeds & good breeders won't sell pups to people who haven't truly researched & have a good understanding of the breed & why it best suits there lifestyle . Personally i would never select a breed thinking you could train it into something else . Characteristics can certainly be stronger or weaker in each pup but the breed will be what it is good & bad. Many people seem to buy Labs because of the perception of being Guides dogs ,guide dogs are well trained animals & a selection process of picking pups with the right attitude to the job is important but they don't pop out with those manners . I will say we don't recommend to our puppy owners taking extended time off work to be at home for pup ,this often ends p causing massive issues for the pup when suddenly left home alone .Start as you plan ,pick the time of year wisely .If your not a winter person don't get a winter pup ,some people find committing to winter training & playing outside not something they wish to committ to . My GSD was a gem to live with ,very independent & able to cope very well on his own ,30 mins walk ,he actually didn't shed alot but he had a vey different coat to many GSD that shed by the bucket load
  9. Fitting in is all about patience & the tolerance of the others already in an established pack & there age & what there lifestyle has been like & the changes that will take place . Rushing to make it fit in may not work ,the next 12 months will be all the dogs working out who fits where & maybe having to change scenarios to better suit. I would suggest making time to understand the dynamics of your current 5 dogs & ask yourself who may not adjust as well & who would be better around the pup at first
  10. Is this the 4 ft fence you mentioned in a previous post .If it is irrespective of what is happening i wouldn't trust that height fence anyway with both breeds in question anyway
  11. Agree structure & if the plan is to rehome do so sooner than later. If your keeping him then keep it simple ,if he has new routines to learn start sooner than later . Take each day slow & steady
  12. Kudah vet for hip/elbows Eye tests wise does your breed have a DNA test or require yearly eye tests?? We still yearly eye test our dogs that do have DNA test. For eyes we use Ziggy Chester based at either Swanbourne or Murdoch ,' If you wish to use the Aces scheme which we don't then Martin King at Rivergum specialist centre . For reading xrays some have used a lady at Murdoch uni but most send east
  13. I have used Bowen for years with great results ,the person i use is excellent though i have used others who where crap but you need to address issues quickly before muscle wastage & the other body parts taking up the slack & its harder to recover from. There is no quick fix im my opinion you can certainly supplement to help long term outlook but the recovery for an injury is patience, recovery work & building things up .
  14. All our pups must be spayed by 6 months unless there is a very good reason not too. Sadly no matter how good pet owners are our breed is highly sort after by BYB /DD & we have a number of vets who breed & try & convince clients to breed . If we find we can no longer trust people they will be spayed before they go,we do live in the real world. We so far have a 100% success rate for over 20 yrs breeding & no health issues with pups spayed. I do understand in larger breeds spaying latter has its merits but i also fully support early spaying in a world where breeding dogs & creating crosses has become far to easy . We ourselves spay all our retired showdogs i don't want extra bitches coming in season just for the fun off it
  15. You made the right decision i applaud you for doing so & also asking for other views .
  16. Walks here is for walks not social outings ,sniffing & peeing .I don't allow my dogs to think peeing up everything in public is acceptable . My dogs have other outlets to play & interact but not on there walks & i believe the greater majority of dog owners follow that plan aswell & see no issues with owners who do this . Infact i got feed up walking my dogs in some areas where other people thought it was there right for there dogs to interact with mine or play & then get all high & mighty when i would say no ,like i was the bad owner .There dogs would act like untrained crazies dragging them to play (well often that was the word they used when fairly obvious they had no manners & the owners not concept of control or respect ). It sad we live in a world where people are so quick to judge people who use different methods when out in public with often not knowing the full story & just getting the basics Here is a person whose dog is on lead & under control & she made out to be unfair ,then the next breathe we read posts about offleash dogs & there owners & there idiots because they don't have effective control . I now dogs feed a similar diet who have medical issues & its part of a process in working out a diet regime infact a dog we breed is currently being feed similar & yes the vet is happy with the diet so far for what they are achieving. Diet is personal & breed specific & i can tell you from someone who works with dogs 24/7 365 days of the year i see a wide selection of diet options & i think many people who be amazed at which dogs are often healthier & the diets there feed
  17. What did the breeders feed them ??Have you stuck with that diet or changed it ?? What other treats do they get?? How long do you leave the food bowls down?? Creating fussy eaters is an issue the more you pander the more the pups will play the game & generally win. We will change diets if a dog isn't doing well or truly isn't enjoying it but otherwise diet & feeding is not deal game here ,eat it or lose it

    Help Please!

I wouldn't trust hose panels for a Stafford baby & would be more concerned of the damage pup will do to it self with them .
  19. We would be bottle feeding not tube , Our pups are 3 weeks & drink water ,eating mince, soaked puppy & other foods & there a small breed
  20. Stupid you for selling without full payment. You need to stop phoning & start doing things in writing he said/she said won't be much help if you go civil & phoning every day isn't going to help the cause . You need to take a step back & approach this is a professional manner .Engage a debt collector like mentioned or send a bill ,find out what you must do to legally inform them you want payment ,make sure you do it all correctly & if no luck then small claims
  21. Also having no tail means nothing How does he behave with a different handler who you trust ?? It could be a combo of your handling .mixed signals & dog not knowing where it fits.
  22. Im the opposite all my active large breed pups are taught how to switch off . I do walk mine within reason as they need to be lead trained and experience the world but its a short walk We don't teach leash training in our backyard & all our pups from 5 weeks play in the front garden so they see cars, bikes ,kids & any other noise . You can simply sit out the front on leash . As for weight im not a fan of too lean ,my large breeds pups are well covered they grow quickly and a underweight pup can suddenly be anorexic when it grows so adjusting the weight to growth is important ,I see far to many lean pups up to 12 months & then they struggle to get weight or condition on . Your breeder should be a wealth of knowledge though & don't be afraid to ask them questions us breeders want to hear from our puppy buyers & give them sound breed knowledge
  23. I would be taking them to an eye specialist & getting a BAER test done . The question i would ask myself is would i take on this pup for ever ,if the answer is no them i consider the same applies to other people.
