  1. I can mainly only echo what everyone else has suggested, as to bringing her milk in, but as to her stressing when you take a pup....is there room enough in her whelping box to sit with her while you bottle feed? I found with my own bitches (ACDs), that if I sat with them, and nuzzled them, all the while keeping that pup in their line of sight, that they were okay with me taking a pup. I'm not sure why, but the nuzzling seemed to work wonders. Aunt-bitch behaviours with wolves? (By nuzzling, I mean using my face like a cat would do, and rubbing around their head, crooning soothingly.) I know that the first day she was super protective of them...is she still? Can you distract her, while moving the pups one at a time to the "milk-bar" and away from her front legs? And I mean one at a time, as in you take a pup to her teats, but leave the others in place, and then switch out pups. I'm so sorry that you're having to deal with this
  2. We tried using slow down bowls and Kongs, but the Dobe ate them Usually when I was in the other room with the other dog. So, now we just spread his food all over the store room floor and he has to find his food. We also have to hide the water while they're eating or else he'll drink and drink and drink. I swear that he WANTS to give himself bloat.
  3. We in Canada don't often get to see the Super Bowl ads, because of Canadian content laws and all that jazz (), but I did manage to find these two, which we can only see after the SB: Doritos Time machine Definitely NOT as cute as the Budweiser one, but they still have a dogs ! Found two more! Pugs and Great Danes, gotta love 'em, lol. I have seen the Great Dane one, but I have never seen the Pug one 2011 2012
  4. *comes out of lurking* Congratulations, SLF and Reba!! Fanstatic news, and yes, photos only when everyone is ready. What a great outcome after such a horrible start. Hugs all-round!!
  5. Let the dogs out this morning, and the Dobe did his usual running after our other dog, while the other dog is trying find a poop spot. This time though, he was so close to the fence, that when he went spun around in the snow to follow, he smacked the fence with his head (I saw the board bend ), tripped over his own legs, and did a face plant into the snow. He pretended like it didn't happen, even though his entire head was covered in snow Checked him over, but he didn't do any damage, other than to his pride.
  6. I know it's hard, but it would be best to wait until closer to the time to start planning. Prices and regulations change all of the time, and who knows what the rules will be in two years. They could be the same or they could have new ones. Prices will always go up, however, so you wouldn't even begin to start budgeting, except knowing that it will be over $2 000 aus, US, or Cad. The Canadian dollar is more or less almost at par with the U.S. dollar right now, to give you an idea. When I imported my pup into Canada from Australia 5 years ago, there was no quarantine but he did need to have his rabies shot for entry. At the time, he was five months old, weighed approximately 10 kg, and it cost me about $3 000 cad to ship him (and that's NOT including the airport, vet, and duty/import fees ). I believe we used Jet Pets, although I can't remember...would have to look at his paperwork.
  7. Dobe's like to do it too  He's 29 inches (74cm) at the shoulder, so a tall, lanky boy.
  8. I've never met a Basset. Not a single one, even though I've travelled to dog shows, and have lived in many different cities/towns. I would probably be astonished if I met one, and would probably fawn over it too lol. They are gorgeous! Of our two dogs, the Dobermann gets all of the attention while the ACD does not. Poor ACD, lol. HE'S the 'pet me, pet me, pet me!!!!' one while the Dobermann is the more stand-offish. We figure it's just because the Dobe is so much taller, that people see him first. If I walk the ACD alone, that's when I get all the questions, comments, and photos taken. While ACDs are not very rare in Canada, they're still not really common either, so people just love to try and come up with what mix he could possibly be. And, I've had the breed arguments too. One girl was very convinced my boy was an Aussie. She wouldn't listen to me at all, because she OWNED an Aussie, and my dog looked just like hers so he HAD to be an Aussie too. She showed me a pic on her phone, and her "Aussie" was actually an ACD...although an obvious BYB one. She still wouldn't believe me that she was wrong on both for both of our dogs. She persisted that she had got her dog from a 'papered breeder'' and her dog was an Aussie Shep. It took me going back to my apartment, grabbing all of my dog breed books, and running back to the park to finally make her realise that she was wrong, lol.
  9. I don't like hearing other neighbours' dogs bark, but I really dislike my own barking too much even more! The ACD normally only barks when we get home, if someone knocks on the door or gate, if my BF's parents come over, he's rough housing in the backyard, or he needs to go outside. Unless we're sleeping and he needs us to wake up, (and like other owners, I know the difference between his bark meanings) he will only give two or three short barks. When we lived in an apartment, whenever he would hear the door to the stairway open, he would just give two "Bup bups!" to let people know that he was there. The Dobermann...barks at squirrels, cars going by, his own shadow, neighbours walking by, but he won't bark when someone knocks on the door or gate. He seems to let the ACD be the main "talker" for that. If he's barking out our front room window, I will look with him to see what he's barking at, because I understand that that is his job, and then will shush him after I've shown him it's nothing. Sometimes though, when we're sitting nice and quiet downstairs and he lets out one of those big booming barks....I am usually so startled that I yell at him right away When the dogs are outside, they are not allowed to bark more than a couple of times and then are shushed. If it's after 8 pm at night, they are not allowed to bark at all, unless it's for a good reason! We have family with two young girls and a new baby in the other half of our duplex, so we try to be considerate for their sakes. Especially since their bedroom windows over-look our backyard. My BF and I even whisper to each other when we're outside after dark. My only gripe is that their kids are allowed to make as much noise as they want at whatever time they want <_< My BF and I work nights, and it's never nice to be woken up at 7 a.m. by screaming children, after you have finally fallen asleep! It's usually the silence that let's me know that something is really not quite right! The ACD is silent when he means business, and the Dobermann usually just low growls in his throat. That's when I really pay attention.
  10. I am so sorry to hear of Joey's passing I remember him from way back, back when I was on DOL more than I am now. I always loved looking at any photos you had of him and Renae and they always brought a smile to my face. He was a gorgeous little man. Big hugs, take care of yourselves *hugs* RIP Joey
  11. I remember back, when I had my horse riding accident, that my dog and bitch went berserk so bad that the neighbour way across the road came to see what was going on, and was able to drive me to the hospital. She said that she had never heard them bark in such a way before, so she just knew that something had happened. She could see our field from her windows, where I was riding the horses, but she said that she didn't even look out the windows. She just heard the dogs and come running. Another time, one of our horses had got into the bull's barn and had chased him out, but then couldn't remember how to get out himself (he wasn't the smartest of horses.) I had sent the dogs after the bull, but when I was trying to lead the horse out, he started cow-kicking at me, and I told him off. The dogs must have heard something different in my voice, because they came back lightening fast to get between the two of us.
  12. Our three cats have their own bedroom, so that we can keep them separate from the dogs if we are not going to be around (plus they are all cord chewers.) I always keep a very close eye on our ACD. He loves the cats, has been raised with all kinds of different cats since puppy-hood, and he and our fluffy cat wrestle all the time, but you just never know when that typical ACD attitude will appear if he gets swatted too hard one day, "what the...? Oh it's on!"
  13. I had a young bitch who broke her right, front elbow badly enough, that it was amputate, PTS, or have the elbow surgically corrected. Although the surgery option was there, it would have left her with severe arthritis (the specialist's opinion.) No brainer, we chose to amputate. Only four hours after surgery, they opened her cage for a pee, and she ran around the clinic visiting everyone.. It was so much fun trying to keep her quiet for the two weeks rest, that she was supposed to be on  She could wrestle with the older dogs, and became a master at the one-legged take-down. She had no problem keeping up with racing around the yard either. Glad to hear that your dog might not need surgery ( ) but if it ever comes down to needing it, never worry! Animals are extremely resourceful and resilient.
