  1. Yes, he/she was under shelter and in the shade. I might call the council and ask what their policy is... That's a good idea, thanks :) Also, the suburb that this supermarket is in (I live 15 minutes away in the next town) has a druggie culture and it's full of bogans and ferals... This is where I saw the woman wearing trackie pants with high heels. All the women look like clapped out old strippers... It's not a nice place. OMG Really!!! I would have had to run in case I saw someone wearing crocs too!
  2. I have know dogs to die from choking on a piece of dog roll, kibble, chunks of raw meat, the reality is anything that goes in a dogs mouth has the potential to go down the wrong way or unchewed. Undigested chunks or raw hide and other processed treats have also killed dogs from obstructions.
  3. There isnot only the added risk whilst desexing when they are in season but the added turmoil it throws their hormones into. It is much better for the dog all round to wait till they are well out, then desex them. Add this to the trauma this small dog has already been through and I would wait.
  4. Many Groomers will do them at bathtime :) Unless the dog has infected glands then the safest place is the Vets.
  5. I wonder if people make the same choices if they are parents?
  6. Quite a high percentage of snake bites the we see are from suburban backyards, bicycle paths etc as more and more habitat is cleared wildlife are forced closer and closer to homes simply to survive.
  7. I would rather give AV than wait and see if the Vet cannot test, but in all honesty the majority of snake bites that I have seen present at Vet clinics are showing symptoms. Time is of the essence with treatment, and there would be no what ifs with my animals, I have seen far too many snake bite deaths. Most people bitten would be due to accident but with our canine friends they have generally taken the snake on.
  8. Actually I think there are Breeders who do all the right things and deserve the respect and there certainly are greeders, they pump out byb dogs, and designer breeds with no health testing or vision. Their only aim is to make money. So call greeders, grubs or puppy farmers, anything to distance them from real Breeders.
  9. Whole unprocessed grains are included in the mix for roughage for healthy anal glands :)
  10. Our dogs have a clam shell every day during the hot months along with 3 large concrete water containers. The risk of the Lab trashing all the water containers to paddle if he is hot is higher than the risks of leaving them with the paddle pool IMO.
  11. I would remove the eye, given the dogs age, much faster recovery time with less discomfort for the dog. Having been through the wringer with one of mine at a much younger age when the choice between surgery and long painful recovery or removal as an older dog we didn't hesitate to remove the eye. I groom a few one eyed and also some totally blind dogs, they do just fine and with most of them you wouldn't realise if you were not told about it.
  12. Benadryl and Manuka honey is all I use.
  13. We have Natures Gift in the cupboard here for real emergency situations like being flood bound and the shops being unable to restock with fresh produce.
  14. You don't necessarily have to have your pup clipped, but it should be groomed regularly and have its hygiene areas attended to. If you are happy to thoroughly maintain the coat at home, a professional do, just for hygiene areas and and a trim up as needed may be all that is necessary, but she needs to become accustomed to it. It really depends on the pups coat and how you wish her to look and how much work you are prepared to do at home.
  15. This! Also animals recover from the anaesthetic faster when fluid therapy is used. At the very very least the dog should have an IV catheter in place so if anything does go wrong (anaesthetics are always a risk) one is in place to act quickly. The fluids reduce risks of side effects of preop & postop medications help maintain proper kidney function and maintain blood pressure which are affected by anaesthesia and If there are complications during surgery, the intravenous catheter is in place for immediate administration of medications.
  16. Thiamine, Protein, Vitamin A, Pantothenic Acid, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Vitamin B12, Iron, Phosphorus, Zinc, Copper and Selenium lots of good things :)
  17. what health risks do the clinic animals pose?
  18. A secure run for when you are not home. The high temperatures may be causing wildlife to come into closer contact than normal looking for shelter and water, we need to prevent our pets from distressing them more.
  19. Unless each animal received IDENTICAL treatment, as in diagnostics, medications etc what are they basing their opinion on, simply the price? No 2 animals are the same even treatments for a similar illness may require different approaches because of the uniqueness of the patient. Way too many variables, age, history, existing conditions.
  20. For use during whelping to help with contractions etc and after whelping for prevention of hypocalcemia the liquid forms of calcium are absorbed more efficiently and quicker, especially important during whelping, not so much for afterwards.
  21. Try Vet Products Direct their showroom is at 971 Nudgee Road Banyo.
  22. It's natural to have dogs within one breed with variations in features, and natural for some of these variations to be 'exaggerations', but for one of these to actually win at a show sends the wrong message. If they make you shudder, should they be winning? Even if there are only a handful that do? That sends the message to the breeder, and the other breeders involved in the same breed, that those exaggerations are desirable. I think the judges ought to take a long hard look at themselves, and how they are shaping the dogs, and how that is affecting the purebreed community. Their influence, by awarding (and rewarding) certain traits, is why we are having this debate in the first place. Judges?? So you honestly believe that they have so much influence over Breeders?
  23. Powdered supplements are not as readily taken up by the body, I don't know how effective they would be at whelping time, the reason we give sandoz is that it is readily absorbed when it is need most. IMO I think if magnesium is need then looking at giving it in some form as a supplement generally and not just at whelping. I think I would be confirming the need for it first though :)
  24. Same here....you would think there had been a flea invasion..then it stops lol
