  1. The diagram fails to take into account the dogs colouring. In basic physics you learn that darker colours absorb light and therefore heat and lighter colours reflect light and heat. If you have a mostly black dog it will absorb heat when out in the sun and if the coat is long the dog will not be able to cool itself very easily. The diagram shows how a compacted undercoat will impact on the dogs ability to regulate heat. It is not a comprehensive study on all aspects of heat regulation in canines. :) I think the message is pretty simple - keep the undercoat in good order and you shouldn't need to shave a double coated dog to keep it cooler. ... or perhaps the thousands of people in Australia who keep huskies ranging from white to black are all wrong and should change their thinking and shave their dogs in summer? :D THIS! I have never felt the need to shave my dogs for summer, and yes I live in QLD. My Long stockcoat GSD spends most of her day outside, she is groomed out thoroughly and regularly as any coated dog should be, she does not suffer during the QLD summer. I have been grooming dogs for nearly 30 years and the problem is most owners of double coated breeds simply do not keep the dog groomed out properly, many simply do not know how to keep the undercoat under control or wont put in the time. Of course a dog with a thick packed undercoat is not going to be comfortable, but groom it out and you have a different dog. Old or infirm dogs that find the grooming process uncomfortable may certainly benefit from a clip off, but the majority of dogs simply need to be groomed properly.
  2. I have had nasty "labradoodles" overly freaky "moodles" and assorted other mutts that seriously were bad news in for grooming. Animals being peddled as being the perfect family pet and receiving no training, no socializing and expected to grow into some animated stuffed toy. Any dog of any breed or mix takes time and commitment, No breed or cross has the monopoly on that and any of them can be ruined in the wrong hands.
  3. What is the point of pushing for everyone to choose a purebred, we don't breed any where near enough to fill the demand and we make it too hard for many to even want to try to get on the list. We have handed the pet market to the cross breeders on a platter.
  4. So, if a dog barks from inside the house at a door knocking sales person, it would be declared menacing? If the salesperson feels threatened then yes
  5. Great Rugs heavy duty blue mesh beds, awesome !
  6. Our dogs are locked in at night too, for the safety of both them and the wildlife (which is abundant) with the added bonus of no barking to annoy anyone.
  7. First the dog that bites the home invader :) My link Then the dog who foils an attempted child abduction :) My link
  8. Have you spoken to your pups Breeder? First port of call :)
  9. That is it in a nut shell, Pets Australia is just as bad a look at their members list is very telling!
  10. If someone strange barged into my dogs sleeping area and shone lights and cameras at them in the middle of the night I'd think they would look stressed too especially my oldies! I have seen the footage of the total kennel area, and those night cages are heaps large enough for sleeping, and they all open out onto yards. From what I have seen the biggest issue people have is this woman doesn't have flash whiz bang state of the art kennels like the commercial puppy farm have. There certainly were no circling stressed pacing dogs in the video footage released of the entire complex.
  11. Are you dogs sensitive to fish or potato or any of the other ingredients? If not, You wont know if any of the ingredients set your dog off until you try it
  12. My injuries required over one hundred stitches...I was bitten twice...not mauled...bitten twice..on the face..the stitches used by plastic surgeons to repair facial injuries are minute and there are many of them. Not trying to make light of what happened to this particular child..but having once been that child myself I know! I can also say that my backside was sore as well.
  13. I had my face very badly bitten when I was a child and my injuries required all of the above except dental work, dog and I lived to be mates another day, and I never repeated the act of disobedience that lead to the bites. I too would like to know what the back story is to these attacks, and I have never been one to simply expect a dog to take anything dished out to it without retaliation. Not a popular stand but there it is. Dogs ay with their lives simply for being dogs at times. Working in the Vet industry I saw many dogs killed due to their owners stupidity and lack of respect. Some families will be repeat offenders because they kill the dog and do not fix the issue that is in their home. Not saying it is the case in this story by any means, but it happens time and time again.
  14. Lamb flaps and chicken portions skin on have always worked here as an addition to an already good diet. There certainly is nutrition in them and I have never experienced any issues with feeding them as part of a diet. The key to preventing constipation (which I presume is the stool issue mentioned above) with any diet is balance. Too much bone will cause constipation in some dogs, but as part of a diet I have never had an issue. I don't feed porridge, bread or any other processed grains.
  15. Read DOL threads and any other forum where pets are discussed and you will quickly see how in general the public are simply not prepared to pay what a Vets time is worth. Routine surgery like desexing are so discounted it is ridiculous, if everything was costed out to cover the Vets time people would scream even more. Starting wages for Vets are stupidly low, and really don't improve much compared to the years of study and early hard grind that is put in. The overheads involved in running a Vet business are huge and the money coming in does not allow for high wages for young Vets. I can't think of any other profession where people expect the knowledge gained during 6+ years of study and hard work to be given away for free. No ones wants to pay a Vet for his/her time, the begrudge consultation fees and whine continually about the cost of Veterinary care.
  16. I have used Capstar for quick action and have never had a bad reaction to the product over many dogs and lots of years, it is a fast acting but short lived treatment. One of the common side effects of Comfortis is nausea and vomiting and it is recommended to be fed with a meal because of this are you sure your friend is not confusing the two products.
  17. No, realistically, I guess not but I am sure the word was spread within the industry. I hope so anyway as I am sure that was one of Caz's goals. I don't know any Groomers who didn't hear Buddys story within a couple of days, it was certainly spread far and wide amongst the Grooming community, and everyone was shocked, saddened and angry that Buddy lost his life in such a way.
  18. The off label use of chemicals and drugs can be dangerous and in some cases deadly, giving information about how to do so over the internet is dangerous and irresponsible. I have seen the results of at home off label experiments, not pretty and in the end what is your pets life worth? Vets will prescribe off label use of some products under advisement. As for cutting the cost of treatments by using chemicals not registered for Vet use, the costs involved with having a product registered for use are enormous. It isn't as simple as marking the price up on a product to sell it to a different market. The testing a studies that have to be done before registered is granted are involved time consuming and costly. Of course they are more expensive to the end consumer.
  19. Vet Fees Some interesting points in this article.
  20. Low start up..have you any idea how much Veterinary equipment costs..or the cost of stocking Drugs? You may get a bit of a surprise LOL
  21. I can actually see a time when Vets will refuse to treat unvaccinated horses, we are already seeing mixed practice Vets dropping equine work, and some equine vets have stopped all together. Any horse showing signs of illness needs to be treated with suspicion and that means even if you suspect mild colic,or a cold, don't take risks, glove up, make yards dog proof, fence off manure piles. Hendra means making changes to the way we have always done things, because human lives are at risk. Even with the deaths we have had parents are still allowing children to handle the heads of sick horses, even kissing their muzzles. I love my horses, but I value human life so much more, I have seen first hand the agony of waiting for the test results to come back in a after human exposure. It is a no brainer for me.
  22. Hendra may be rare but when it does appear it is devastating. Hendra kills people. My horses have just received their 6month booster, the lives of my family and Vets are worth far more than the small cost to vaccinate.
  23. Says it all really... PETA have a philosophy of NO pet ownership for anyone - so why are we surprised that they kill as many as they can once they get their hands on them? T. I agree, yet people are still in denial that this is what goes on and support them. Hopefully this joint show of concern by two such notable organisations will change the minds of some of the PETA apologists.
