  1. Dogs know when someone is not well.... and some can detect things we cannot. One of my Rottweilers was especially intuitive when anyone was unwell. One day a mutual friend came over with another friend... Blossom was usually all over him like a rash - she loved him to death. This day she was vary wary of him and backed away from him and barked every time he tried to pat her... and 2 days later he had a massive heart attack and required an emergency quintuple bypass... she knew! My brother's dog knows when my brother is about to have a turn, and will actually go get his meds if they are at home. If they are out, the dog will start acting a certain way to let my brother know he has to get his meds asap. Hopefully your friend's relapse has been caught early and can be treated successfully. T.
  2. I have enough bandaging material to make up a Robert Jones cast if needed... lol! T.
  3. Obviously the Council/Ranger find the person from Great Dane Rescue NSW and Friends more palatable than people from the other local rescue groups... stranger things have been known to happen... Seriously, I've seen the carry on some people in rescue can pull with regards to pounds... and have no sympathy for those shut out for being "troublesome". Gotta work within the boundaries set by each pound, or you'll find yourself looking elsewhere for rescue animals... I used to take photos of poundies at a local pound. Their kennels weren't anything to write home about, and it was a challenge to get photos of the animals without showing the somewhat run-down kennels/runs. It was not pretty, but the staff did work hard to make it as comfortable as possible for the animals in their care. Other rescuers saw the place and kicked up a stink about the old and not pretty conditions - and the next thing we all knew, no-one from rescue was allowed in there... except me, because I was genuinely in there doing my best to work within the conditions and trying to get publicity for the animals there to get rescue. Pounds are not pretty places - they are not designed to be long term holding facilities - and different councils will pay differing amounts of monies for the tender to do the job that no-one really wants to do. Some rescuers need to remember all of that before going off their tree and stuffing up hard won trust that others have gained with various pounds. T.
  4. Amazing!! I love the beauty of where you live perse! T.
  5. What is that in Pic 2? Looks like a form of Wandering Jew... Pic 7 looks like Dandelion weeds... but I don't think many dogs are allergic to those... mine aren't, but they can get red and itchy from Wandering Jew. Note: Wandering Jew is a bugger to try to kill... best way I've found is to rip it all out and then pour used sump oil into the ground it was growing in to prevent it coming back. Some allergies are seasonal too, the grasses change in the different seasons. T.
  6. A friend of mine has the 70D, and I can say that the updated DIGIC processor definitely craps all over my 60D's processor. That said, I'm getting pretty much the same results with my setup as she is getting with hers - except for the really low light scenarios... hers just does so much better in low light compared to mine. If I had the money for the 70D, or even the new 7D, I'd be getting one in a shot! Shutter speed is definitely worth looking at when making your selection - especially when you want to take action type shots. I'm a bit of a fan of the crop sensor mainly because it gets me that extra distance on my zoom. Crop sensors increase the zoom distance 1.6x... so my 100-400mm lens actually gets me 160-640mm worth of zooming in on a subject. Then again full frame gives such wonderful clarity... decisions, decisions! I love the way the Canon feels in my hands... I went from the 450D to the 60D with not much difficulty. I will say that when I bought the 100-400mm lens, the first day I took it out and used it all day handheld, my poor right hand complained bitterly the next morning - taking it out again and using it handheld soon cured that issue... lol! The 60D plus the 100-400mm lens weighs in at around 2kg... which is a lot of workout for your biceps when using handheld... I have great biceps now... lol! T.
  7. The last time I boarded any of my dogs was due to me needing to have surgery. Dropped the dogs off the afternoon before... no biggie... After working in kennels that did both rescue and transit boarding for a dog transport company, I'm much more aware of the ups and downs of those who run them. Routine is a huge part of having animals settle into the new arrangement, so people deciding that they want special treatment with no good excuse are just rude! T.
  8. That's a little harsh Rebanne... have you lost a heart dog before? If so, you should be able to understand the huge hole in the soul they leave... Kajtek will be an awesome home for any dog... and for people to simply not respond to an enquiry about a dog they are trying to rehome is just rude... Hang in there Kajtek, the perfect new family member will come along when the time is right, OK? T.
  9. I'm a complete Canon girl through and through... I have a Canon 60D which I purchased new in 2011 and it's still going strong and has never needed a service or repair in all that time - and I take around 3000-4000 photos a week with it. My fave lens is my Canon 100-400mm L lens - worth every penny of the fortune it cost to purchase! I went whale watching last year in horrible conditions - overcast and a 2m+ swell trowing the boat all over the place. I had to wrap my leg around the railings to stop from being thrown overboard while trying to predict when/where the whales would do their thing... I think I managed to get a few reasonable photos even though it was nigh on impossible to stay upright and hold the camera steady... *grin* - some of my whale watching pics from that trip. Am definitely thinking of having another trip in better conditions this year to see if I can do better...I mainly take photos of animals in zoos, which has it's own set of difficulties with lighting, positioning of animals in large enclosures, etc... but My Canon combo sees me right for those too... https://www.flickr.com/photos/tdierikx/albums - the rest of my photo collection... Seriously, I'd be looking to buy the best camera/lens combo that I could afford... or even saving to get same... I can't stress how much a really nice lens can make all the difference! T.
  10. Lucky Neko! I'd like cuddles from her daddy too... *grin* She has such amazing eyes... such expression! T.
  11. 9 is not old for a Labrador... my 9 year old still plays zoomies like a 2 year old... *sigh* T.
  12. Exactly how much Labs and Rotties can actually shed... all year around! T.
  13. The eyes tell the whole story, don't they? He really loves his human to bits! T.
  14. ACT Magistrate's Court imposed the ban along with a 12-month good behaviour order and a $123 fine Not much of a deterrent, is it? And what is actually going to stop this person getting another pet... are they going to monitor her for the next 10 years? Methinks not... A slap on the wrist really... T.
  15. Stunning perse! I love Apostlebirds, they are real clowns... T.
  16. He's up for the chase... but obviously not the catch... lol! Sounds like Don had a great time... the euro, maybe not so much... *grin* T.
  17. Awww... Feather is so pretty! T.
  18. Gotta love the senile delinquents, yes? They march to the beat of their own drum, despite what you think you want them to do... My Zeddy has developed selective deafness and feigns it being hard to get up the back steps... even though she can hear the food bin opening and get herself inside quicksmart from the middle of the yard... *sigh* ETA: Zeddy will be 16 in August. T.
  19. This thread and especially your post, are quite timely for me as I've been monitoring Luna for symptoms as she was exposed to a strain that is resistant to the vaccine... And we've had a broken sleep as the cough began overnight. She's still eating with gusto, so I'll try the honey to ease her throat. The cough should only last about a week - the only time you should start to worry or think about using antibiotics is if yellow or green snot starts coming up or out of the nose, OK? Luna should have weaker symptoms as s/he has been vaccinated against the regular ones, OK? The manuka honey is great - apply as regularly as you like... T.
  20. From memory, KC doesn't live long in the environment - it needs to be freshly shed for it to be infectious. The usual "quarantine" period for a dog who has had KC is 2 weeks AFTER the end of the symptoms. When I was fostering pups, we had lots of them that had KC... and none of them seemed to worry about the fact that they had to stop playing now and then to attempt to cough up a lung... *grin* Seriously, KC is rougher on us having to listen to the cough than on the pup... if pup gets it, give manuka honey to soothe the tickle in the throat, and otherwise treat just like a child with a cold. T.
  21. Agreed, I'm not sure that this wasn't some sicko getting his kicks. I think he is having you on;really why would anyone give such details over the phone knowing it is a crime. If he wanted to surrender a dog he could do so at any shelter he chose without saying anything. Not if it isn't his dog to surrender... T.
