So eloquently put Jed... describes the joy of pups to a tee! People wonder why I foster rescue pups... I think Jed's description of the adult dogs' interaction with the littlies answers that perfectly... my girls are so good at helping raise them... T.

Personally, I'd be fitting a correction collar and using it with a short sharp "uuhh" if the dog was displaying that sort of behaviour - then treat when the dog is good... T.

I'd be calling the local council on the health aspects of the place - if it's that filthy, people could get sick too... ewww! T.

My dogs are inside when I'm not home, and the back door is always open when I'm home so they can come and go as they please then - and funnily enough, they prefer to be inside lying around... *grin* My yard is fully secure and has enough shelter, but I have a crazy bitch for a back neighbour, and I don't trust her not to throw baits into the yard if the dogs make any noise when I'm not home. Inside is safer all around for my babies methinks... T.

It sounds like you are making great progress with Tango spottychick... perseverence pays off doesn't it? Keep up the good work! T.

Petfood Plus in Roselands may have it - or can get it in for you - here's their website - call them... http://www.petfoodplus.com.au/index.html T.

Certain areas of Sydney have regular rounds of it... most likely because those areas are populated fairly highly with people in the lower socio-economic brackets who don't regularly get their dogs to the vets for things like vaccinations. The Disease Watchdog is just highlighting the areas... and it is also making a lot more vets aware of the disease too. I remember a few years back having 2 pups contract Parvo - and my vet commented that they hadn't seen any cases for quite a while - which is why the first pup was diagnosed as Coronavirus and never actually tested for Parvo - the second pup was tested and was positive... sadly, neither pup survived, even with the best treatment my vets could offer... Wanted: Foster Carer Or Rescue For Huskies X 3
tdierikx replied to k9angel's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Awwww... love the term "Husky Haven"... sums it up to a tee! T. -
On one side of my yard the colourbond fence is only 5 feet high... where our dogs could jump up and see over into the neighbour's yard, we have attached lattice to long star pickets - it works a treat - for our dogs and theirs... It works well for when the neighbour's young lad likes to climb a ladder on their side of the fence to have a chat and see my foster puppies... he can see through, but cant fall over the fence... hehe! Does Your Oh Allow Your Dog/s To Sleep On The Bed?
tdierikx replied to Abigail's topic in General Dog Discussion
We bought a bigger bed to accommodate our dogs... then the OH left... now there is more room for the dogs... *grin* I don't think I could sleep without a furry snorehound next to me now... The fosters have their crates in the bedroom too... T. -
I'm a snob... I like dogs... all dogs... more than I like people actually... I must say that a well bred and healthy purebred is truly a thing of beauty... but so is a happy and healthy crossbred dog. I would not call anyone a "snob" if they preferred to own purebred dogs - but if they made nasty comments about my mutts, then maybe I would... *grin* Working with rescue, I see a lot of crosses - but we sometimes see purebreds too. Anything that can be identified as bred by a reputable breeder will have that breeder contacted before we do anything with that dog... you could call it professional courtesy I suppose. Sometimes if we have a pure dog of certain breeds, some people from the breed club may ring and offer assistance with rehoming that dog... and that sort of help is always welcome. Some breed clubs are more diplomatic than others... errr! T.

I'd be outlining the reasonably high incidence of small dogs needing caesarians... and how much that may cost and still ending up with no puppies at the end of the expenses... note that a caesarian will most likely need to be performed in emergency hours and the costs of that can run into some thousands... T.

I foster pups for rescue, and I'm more inclined towards mutts for my own pets - but it would never be my place to try to "force" someone else's choice of where they source a pet for themselves. Sure, if someone I knew was looking in petshops for a dog, I'd explain to them the benefits of getting a dog from rescue over getting a dog from a petshop - same unknown "breeding", but all vetwork, etc, done, and for a fraction of the price... *grin* However, if someone was researching their fave breed and looking for reputable breeders of same, I'd support them wholeheartedly... You choose what is right for YOU - and to hell with the naysayers, OK? My cousins (who adopted a rescue puppy from my rescue group) live next door to 2 Aussies - they are lovely!! The owner of the Aussies comes over when she's off for a walk/run with her dogs and asks if Gidget wants to come along too... the Aussies are in love with little Gidget and act as her bodyguards at the off lead park - they run interference to some of the unruly larger dogs that go running up to Gidget, and Gidget feels very safe at the park with her besties... *grin* T.

I reckon little Luki fell totally in love with Gypsy... she is such a nice old girl... I love your updates and photos - keep them coming! T.

Should Small And Big Dogs Behave The Same?
tdierikx replied to grumpette's topic in General Dog Discussion
My expectations of MY dogs are that they are social with other dogs of all sizes - my dogs are of the large variety, but I foster pups of all types. All my fosters are socialised with others of different sizes. Right now I have 4 foster pups - 1 Ridgey/Dane (weighs 25kg) and 3 terrier crosses (all just under 2kg) - they all play nicely together. I think the general perception is that smaller dogs won't do as much damage as larger dogs, so some people allow their smaller dogs to display behaviours that they would deem totally unacceptable from a larger dog - personally I don't subscribe to that notion - all dogs, regardless of size, really should display no aggression to others (human or animal) if being taken out in public. It is NOT amusing to see a dog of any size being aggressive or dominant. T. -
What state is your mother in? I think she might need some legal advice from someone with Strata title experience. Take the letter that advises that she was given initial permission from the BC - regardless of their backtracking jargon after that, I think she may have a decent case to put forward. It's a bit rough to allow the animal for 4 months and then reneg on an agreement that they admit she had with them BEFORE getting the dog... T.

My girls don't resource guard as such - but one of them is a Labrahoover... she scoffs whatever she has and will look for more every time. Zeddy is more sedate when she eats - preferring to chew every mouthful... I can feed and give treats like biscuits together (supervised) and we have no issues. Things like bones and pigs ears are given in separate rooms because I'll be darned if I'm sitting there waiting for Zeddy to finish... T.

This is what poodle pups look like when they have spent one day with me and my Labrador... I think Fern had lots of fun - what do you think?? Fern's mummy was most unimpressed... why??? T.

What Quirky, Cute & Funny Things Does Your Dog Do?
tdierikx replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't know where Trouble (Labrador) learned to sit up and beg, but she does it so well... My girls also know that when I say "kitchen" they are to go in there, and I shut the door - this is a good thing for when I leave for work, or if people come to the door and I don't want Zeddy scaring them with her "I'm a big vicious dog" act... Goldies Behaviour When Husband Comes Home?
tdierikx replied to Snowball's topic in General Dog Discussion
I used to have a male Rottie that would lead you around the yard "holding" your hand... it freaked my dad out once when he was visiting... and Rastus used to talk to you as well, which dad thought was growling. Once dad realised that the dog was actually being gentle and affectionate with him, they were fine... *grin* T. -
Is the dog in question a "blue" colour by any chance? T.
-
I have a Labrahoover and a Rottie/Pittie X - the Lab inhales her food, and the Rottie/Pittie chews every mouthful. Needless to say, they are supervised while eating, or they are fed in separate rooms - the Lab would definitely steal the other girl's food if not supervised or separated. T.

Largest litter of pups I've had to help rear was 10... Rottie pups... they are soooo cute and funny when they are about 4-5 weeks old and their individual personalities are really starting to kick in! We sat for hours just watching them play... Have help rear 2 other litters of 9 pups - one litter of Rotties, and one of Labrador X - pretty similar as pups, and just as cute at the 4-5 week mark. One thing I don't miss about having a large litter is the cleaning up after them... T.
