  1. Just after some advice My 2 whippets were in some really long grass the other day and both have a crusty rash with pustules, Bella is much much worse than Lucy (she only has a couple). I have wiped the pus away and it has an acidic smell to it not normal pus. It is revolting. It isnt worrying them at all. I have washed them in Malaseb but hasn't made any differnece My neighbour suggested it was a grass that has a fungus on its head Just after some advice with what I should bathe it in or put on it or what it is
  2. I get asked all the time when I am going to breed my whippets, my usual response is: 1. They are both female ( one is significantly small than the other and they dont have boy bits) 2. they are desexed - pure pet 3. I wouldn't breed from these 2 with their issues - reactive + extra tooth and terrible allergies, little dog is very nervous and anxious Nup never - there are other people who dedicate their lives to this and I am happy to let them do it and pay the appropriate amount for a pup to live a healthy desexed life with me as a pet
  3. I have 2 of these for my dogs - houdini whippet doesn't get out with mesh on top and bottom - they are light and don't cost much in postage. Best value for money I got some aviary mesh for top and bottom + some of those compost bins made of wire from bunnings - works well is easily dimounted and relocated
  4. My whippet has put out 2 intruders in the last 6 months - who would have thought First was a drunk who let himself in my side gate into my back yard - dont know why it was shut, thankfully she had her hackles up and snapped and snarled at him until he left briskly. I was home alone in Nambour (not the safest of places) so she got lots of cuddles that night. the second one was at 5am and a kid about 18 let himself in my back yard - the dogs are caged on the back porch and put up merry hell - I went out thinking was a bird and let them out. He got ousted the same way The other whippet barks then runs behind my legs as if to say look what i found mum Now if I am home alone without my partner they sleep with me for "protection" well that is what i tell hiim anyway. The neighbours even get warned if someone different comes up to their back yard - combination of cocky and dogs. They don't mind and feel safer for it
  5. My whippet does this - they could be reverse sneezes This is an iggy on you tube there is also a maltese doing it
  6. In my house I am a bit more relaxed and aim for balance over time. Lots of fresh bones, sardines, eggs, yoghurt, veges, fresh meat, minced chicken frames , casserole (kidney, liver etc made by local people for dogs), omega oil and whatever else I can think of or have lying around that is suitable. I am a bit too busy to do the percentage so took a more relaxed out look I initially used Dr B's to get the allergies under control and if others look after my dogs. I also use VAN but not every night and at much reduced amounts Have had great results - allergies much resolved and coats are great
  7. i made my own anxiety wrap out of "Tubigrib" - stuff used at hospitals for sprained ankles, just choose the size you want, cut holes in for legs and slide it on. Worked great and it was free - cause I flogged some from work - he he he Much cheaper option though
  8. BIG THUMBS up for Jane - She is fantastic and the results we have had have been awesome Definately recommend her
  9. If he slips his collar - maybe invest in a martingale collar - great for my slippery whippets or greyhounds They give you a bit of safety, alternately have 2 collars with a joiner b/w them so if he slips one then the other is still there or instead of a second collar a harness with a joiner to the collar - either so the collar can't come off or so that you have him if he escapes the collar Big thumbs up for Jane she is awesome - she has access to a wonderful non-reactive greyhound, who put up with my whippet snapping at her without a blink of an eye lid With obedience clubs go and watch their techniques adn talk to people before joining so you can see if it is for you Also - K9force Steve does distance courses for loose lead walking etc - awesome
  10. Thanks Steve That is exactly what was happening - the golden was just so distracted with other dogs and wasn't/couldn't focus, I just don't think it was fair with no warning of what was about to be inflicted. I don't disagree with corrections just the force that was used unnecessarily in this case - he was so over stimulated he and the trainer had no hope I am not averse to repremanding my 2 if they step out of line esp when a bush turkey or water dragon is involved, however, I tell them to leave it first and give them a second to adjust then the get a pop to remind them This has taken months from screaming and jumping along like a kangaroo to get to the "prey" - most embarassing
  11. I was walking the whippies b/w showers this arvo and noted a dog training session in the local park so I walked around for a sticky beak, sorry I did. Their where 4 dogs - 3 labs and 1 retriever The "trainers" idea of teaching a dog to heel was to seriously yank on the check chain. The poor retriever wasn't really doing anything wrong just having a good look around. There was no warning regarding the correction just a serious whole body yank - the noise that eminated from those yanks gave me goose bumps. I feel sorry for the other dog owners who are being taught this method of training. I am glad that I have ended up through trial and error doing some positive training mainly clicker - now I use a balance of training in drive,TOT and loose leash walking from Steve at K9 - this is working nicely for me at present On the up side my evil whippies where walking on loose leads nicely
  12. I have 2 ment to be secure runs in the back yard half covered for protection with a dog house. They get a treat if it is a long day stay but nothing otherwise. THe treat is usually a bone for mental stimulation My whiley one tried to dig through the mesh and has minced her front paws - little bugger. Her pen is mesh top bottom and sides and she still escapes. Whereas my younger one has mesh on the sides and couldnt care less. If it is just a short trip to the shops then I shut them in a room without a word or put them in their crates and leave. Not sentimental here b/c of separation anxiety.
  13. I trained my 2 at ages 2 and 4 - I did them separately using crate games - worked a gem. LOVE THIS DVD I don't mind which one they go in as long as they go in at "time for bed". They usually happily trot in and lay down Also fantastic with a storm phobic dog, just set it up in the living room and encourage dog in and cover up. Calms her heaps.
  14. My biggest connundrum is how do you make a dog more confident????? She will quite happily look at me the rest of the time except in the triangle. i even started a week of the triangle with just them giving eye contact, she seems to panic at the idea of being tied out which is why i have persisted b/c i want her to be able to be tied
  15. No she has always been a very submissive type (I think anyway). She cringes ,tail b/w her legs, won't look at me, and won't obey known commands (very stubborn). I was intending to send you some vid's of me trying to get her motivated for her toy and of the TOT On a different note she is much more confident and less nervous about other dogs being around, she actually sniffed another dog the other day ( a large dog), she usually pees and cringes and hides. None of this, not outgoing but better. As for my other whippet - it has worked wonders with her behaviour.
  16. ACV is great for fleas, just have to make sure your dog doesn't have any scratches etc on them or it stings. I put it on as a rinse after a bath. gives them a great shine, they almost shimmer. Get a brand with "the mother" it is said to be better Some suggestions: Use apple cider vinegar as a pet bath to treat fleas and skin irritation. Wash your pet first with a mild shampoo and then wash again with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water. Rinse off when finished with cool water and repeat this bath as needed to fleas and skin allergies. Mix equal parts apple cider and vinegar with fresh water and put in a plastic spray bottle. Spray your furry friend daily to treat fleas, heal hot spots, stop itching, and increase the health and luster of your pet's coat. Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to your dog's water or food bowl daily to treat a variety of ailments and benefit the overall health of your dog. Do the same for your cat, but reduce the dosage to a teaspoon. It is believed that apple cider vinegar maintains healthy urinary and digestive health, treats allergies, and as an added benefit, even keeps dog urine from killing your lawn. Use apple cider vinegar as a spot treatment for tear stains, skin rashes, calluses, and dry flaking skin on your pet. Apple cider vinegar may even ease joint pain in arthritic dogs, and counteract common toxins and poisons that your pets may be inadvertently exposed to like pesticides and cleaning products.
  17. Hi I have been working on the triangle now with the 2 dogs for almost a month with great results in their behaviour. Lucy the territorial whippet is much calmer and less dominant towards us. Bella however, comes to be tethered but when you put the food down she becomes overly submissive toward me. Her sit is a crouch with reluctance to look at me, but not looking at the food usually the floor. Also as you would expect the dog should become more eager to work for food, she has become for relucant and less obediant. I would expect her to just sit when the command is given - but she doesn't. I had a chicken leg in my hand today and it took 3 goes. I am sure she knows the command. She did the same thing at dinner time, just wouldn't sit for her dinner. Any suggestions greatly appreciated
  18. Whipitgood my younger dog will happily chase and retrieve a "squirrel tail" thing at home but just looks at you blankly if you get out a ball. Also they stalk and hunt bush turkeys, water dragons, skinks, geckos, flies, moths and cockroaches. Oh and cane toads. Little buggers. Loveable and fun but just not what I am after I am seriously looking at a viszla - love the short coat and the colour, but am partial to a kelpie as well
  19. I grew up with a BC - Ella aka Whoopie she is 8 this year - with heart failure adn going deaf. She charmed him while we were home at christmas time. I love the dogs and aim to get one, just worried I won't do the dog justice and be a good enough owner for the dog. Whoopie is certainly an awesome dog - despite her terrible heart and given 1 year at 4 she has defied all odds and still goes hunting (we live on large acreage) and takes down wallaby. When we had chooks she used to have standoffs with them beak to nose over the rotting animal and the flies - gross but funny. She would spend some of her day rounding them up and then jumping in the middle of them to scatter them so she could round them up again. Her other prowess is that she could tell the difference b/w chook and the native hen in Tassie - loved the native hens for a good hunt. I would like to wait a little until I finish these exams and we get a bigger place for a BC
  20. I have the exact same problem I would like to do more in agility and obedience but as a leaner my whippets are a little on the thick side sometimes Also would LOVE to have a dog that i could take to the beach and throw a ball - i went today and threw the ball the whippets would run round where the ball landed then back to me without looking at it. BAH They did enjoy the water though it was very warm, but Bella only goes in up to her belly and that is with 12 mths of practice I am thinking of a Viszla - but am nervous cause I know they can be high energy My partner wants a border collie but I don't think our lifestyle suits - I am a doctor and he is almost an fulltime ambo We love our 2 whippies but ...... i don't know, just suppose I am left wanting.......
  21. I found percentages too confusing for me I ended up using Dr B's patties b/c mine only eat half each at night plus a bone during the day. Food amounts based on how they look. My older one gets a whiff of food and puts on weight , whereas the younger one you can poke food in all day and it doesn't get fat. They also love half of tin of sardines each a week, raw egg once a week, leftover cooked veges I really liked VAN however, my older ones allergies didn't like it. I intend to go back to it for my younger pup - she did great on it.
  22. Both of mine do it - with all different sorts of collars Older whippet is worse than younger one Don't know why
  23. I bought shade cloth at bunnings and doubled it over cause my runs aren't that wide, it works really really well for shelter and rain except for downpours
