  1. What's the difference between lamb flaps and lamb ribs please?
  2. I think responsible, ethical breeders, show dogs, dog savvy people etc know how to own an entire dog it's the d' heads that don't.
  3. After scooting around GT (for example) and seeing all the mix breed puppies for sale, yet seeing all these mix breeds being advertised on the same page needing new homes. And again in shelters and pounds. And the crazy combination of breeds leads me to believe that desexing should be compulsory.
  4. I agree with persephone. Our niece has a beautiful way with dogs. Ever since she was around 4-5, she is now 16, she has a very calming energy around dogs and some other animals. When they have visitors they all bring their dogs. It's not I think or I have noticed she is doing anything in particular, it's just the dogs all respond to her. It just seems very natural. We have always called her the dog whisperer, so to speak.
  5. I change every 6 months. Mine do well on EP and Nutro. They also get chicken carcass, lamb flaps(trimmed), lamb ribs, sardines, salmon and turkey necks when I can find them.
  6. A customer came in yest. Looking at bits and pieces for new pup. Japanese Spitz. Asked where from, P.P told me he paid $1800, I say oh and how is it all going. Pup has the runs, drinking lots and peeing every 10-20 mins, I say better take him to the vet. It's ok we will to some shopping first then we may take him. I say how about you go now and then come back and shop. Luckily they went. Another customer, new pup, a Puggle. I say oh what's that, they reply with it's a purebred beagle x pug. I say no that's a cross breed, they reply NO it's a purebred Puggle with papers, just like the labradoodle, spoodle etc.....That's all new to me , I replied. No point arguing as they were getting sh@#$%. On the way home, 9pm, night jogger with kelpie. Main road, kelpie off lead running behind jogger. Jogger runs across road just avoiding a car, car nearly hits dog. On a good note one of our young staff members tells me she is doing a year 12 presentaion on puppy farms, byb, petshops and ethical breeders. This will be seen by 30 students and teachers. Puppy school at the store. 4 beautiful well bred pups, all from ethical breeders.
  7. I know there are lots of sad ads re dogs. But this one got to me. This is Max, it is now time for us to move on, he is 12, blah, blah blah :p
  8. Good point. Maybe if the bell fell off and no one came she would bark.
  9. Mine just sits at the door as well. So I put a cat bell on her collar so I could hear where she was. I will defianately try the training ringing the bell.
  10. Yes it does cut both ways. But you have to remember as well that there are going to be first time puppy buyers. There will be some with no clues and they will be of the mind set of a pet shop purchase. So if we want to guide people away from purchasing from a pet shop, where will they go if they are seen as time wasters.
  11. Wow to recommend someone not to adopt from there is sad from my point of view. It's not the dogs fault
  12. I know that one in Springvale. That place is sooo dirty. I reported one last year. It popped up out of the blue. It had 20 pups or more. All different mix breeds. It was winter, they were in cardboard boxes, front door was wide open, which opened out onto a main road. Whippet pups in full breeze huddled together shivering. She was talking to a customer, I yelled at her to keep the door shut, give the pups a blanket and I told her I was reporting her. So I raced home hope rang council, who put me onto Animal Welfare, the officer told me she was already going around as some else complained. They did an audit on her and she had 48 hours to fix the pens. The officer rang me back, and told me that she had complied-and there was nothing more she could do, and that she would keep an eye on her. She is still traiding This women doses her pups on scourban and lactaid. I get so mad driving past and seeing this weeks specials. Good luck with your report puggerpup
  13. Fantastic pics. I looked at all of them. I love whippets and greyhounds
  14. Mix breeds are always going to be around, it's how they are bred that's the problem. Greyhounds for example have a b large gene pool (due to the industry :D ). So I believe that there are no real health issues. The question I would like to ask is are the gene pools for other breeds shrinking? Do purebreeds have to be of show standard or just well bred? I don't know too much about the purebred world but I would like to pass info onto customers, especially new dog owners how to source a ethical breeder once the breed has been decided? To be honest I find it a little daunting as there seems to be some unethical purebred breeders as well.
  15. Of no help here, but look forward to peoples replies as this worries me too.
  16. Lab 16 or 17 ate Pal and food scraps and anything from the butcher or the baker. She was lean as she was on the go with us kids. One day the butcher gave her a rib cage, mum was driving home from work and noticed her dragging it up the hill. Mum drove past her as she was embarrassed.LOL. No health probs. Annual vet visit. Died old age. Silky Terrier BYB. 16yrs. Supermarket Dry mum cooked mince, rice and veg.Ingrown eye lash, allergy to wondering dew in the garden. Again anual vet visit. 2 Cockers Spaniels friends pups. Supercoat, then Hills Dental, bones, left over meat and veg. One died at 12, the other just on 16, back legs went. One dental, one dew claw accident again anual visits. Currently feeding Eagle Pack, chicken carcass, turkey wings, lamb ribs etc.
  17. Always have and always will. Never been a problem for 25 years or so. The amount of dogs that we have found that have had collars on with ID have been sent back home safely. Then there have been the numbers with no ID tags or microchip.
  18. Have the gutsy bowl here, very similar, not as many lumpy bits. Up from 10 sec to 1.5 minutes.
  19. I agree it was the wrong demographic. However it's a start, now to get the ball rolling and have a 1 hour doco. To inlclude the dump rate, the shelter/pound side , heath probs and then where to buy and how to find a good ethical breeder.
  20. Shmurps

    Rottweiler

I have just printed this out and taking it to work.
  21. I have been reading this with great interest and every day this worries me. I do work in the pet industry, and no we don't sell puppies and kittens, but on a daily basis we have people come in with their entire males and puppies. Whether they are buying food or a collar we always have the same conversations. Most want to breed. I would say 80% are mix breeds ranging from Maltese x, oodles etc... but there is a large percentage that have bull breeds and all of those are from byb. Most of the time we talk people out of wanting to breed their little pup that was bought from a petshop or byb. But to have a discussion with someone who has a bull breed is near impossible. So my question is what can I do? or can someone write me up a educational flyer that I can hand out. It doesn't have to be directed at any breed I guess but if we can stop at least one person from irresponsible breeding it would be a very small start.
