  1. That's what I find - they seem to "squash" the nail rather than cleanly cut it. I only used human ones a few times when I was desperate, but it didn't look like it did nice things to the nails. The dremel is my favourite, but unfortunatly I have one girl that needs a straight jacket just for her nails to be done, so the dremel takes too long :/ I use the human ones the same way as I would my own nails, go round the nail. Smooch doesn't like anything that squeezes the nail. He also doesn't like the noise of the dramel even though its not very noisy.
  2. I also use the human ones, Smooch hates the guillotine style, think it might be the slight squeezing on the nails. With the human ones he is fine.
  3. I am home 90% of the time so watch the weather map and go from there. If there are storms forecast I make sure I am home, but as I am retired I can do this.
  4. Just found a site with reasonable postage on the dog ear muffs. Just ordered a pair. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CZQ1T0/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=1278548962&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B009G4CQ3K&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0QM3XDJ6J720AW6Q1VA7
  5. pers this is what I would like to try with Smooch, can not find any in Aus. had a look at over seas but very expensive shipping, I have also tried to modify a human pair but so far can't get them to sit properly so basically have to sit there and hold them on.
  6. Thundershirt on its own didn't work for Smooch but a combination of thundershirt and Rescue Remedy did make a big difference as long as I got the Rescue remedy into him early enough and followed it up every 30 min. I check the weather forecast and when storms are forecast I watch the weather map, from this I can work out when to start the Rescue Remedy. Anything that makes a noise scares Smooch. Truck unloading gravel at the hardware store next door sends Smooch under the computer table. Hope you can find something to help your poor old girl.
  7. In my council area in NSW, working dogs have to be microchipped, council will come out and check if the dog is actually a working dog before allowing free registration but the cost of the microchipping is at the owners expense. Edit to add. Council ranger came out to see if my dogs actually worked. We are on a small cattle property bordering our town.

    Pet Loo

I spray the grass with one of the odour /urine sprays than give it a good hose off. I got some fake grass from Bunnings so that I can change the grass when it gets too smelly. Leave the other one in the sun for several days.
  9. I like these collars, when the leather bit wears out I replaced it with either webbing or plastic coated webbing, the collar lasts forever. http://www.petcompany.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Chain_Collars_and_Leads_71.html
  10. Same, I have had roaming cats come onto my property frightening the crap out of my birds to the extent that birds have died from fright because cat is climbing on their cages. After the council trapped quite a few cats a few years ago I have had no more problems.
  11. Electric fencing wouldn't work with a cat, cats can jump up onto a fence etc and avoid the elect fence.
  12. We had a kong for one of our kelpies, she got her tongue stuck in it, a rushed trip to the vet to get it off. I know a lot of people use them without any problems, but that was our experience with it and I would never use one unsupervised.
  13. One of the vet practices in our area were bought out by Greencross, although I do not use them I do know that there has been a changeover of some of the staff in the approx 12 months Greencross have been there. Greencross appear to be buying out a lot of the smaller vet practices. At this rate they will eventually have the monopoly on this.
  14. I don't have any carpets, in the bedroom a small rubber backed mat next to the bed which I spray with a carpet dry shampoo about once a week. Leather lounge has a blanket and sheet over that, sheet washed every second day. Smooch gets bathed once a week, if he does start to smell a little in under a week I bath him with conditioner only. The other dog is only allowed in the shed as he thinks its a good idea to lay on Smoochies toilet so he smells of pee most of the time, and Smoochies pee is quite strong smelling due to his disibility. I have asked non dogie people and they say my place doesn't smell.
  15. I have used Dog Movers a few times found them great. www.dogmovers.com.au
  16. We peaked at 46.7 yesterday in the Hunter Valley. Today only 25, what a lovely day, got so much done outside.
  17. I came up with a idea for my bird aviaries today, could work for dogs as well. I put a couple of steel fence posts into the ground and one across the top, run a piece of poly tubing across the top piece, fitted some misting nozzles into it, attached the hose and just turned the tap on a little, lovely mist spray for the birds.
  18. This is so true with Smooch. Dogs often misbehave when their owners are present. I can't even go in the examination room at the vet's with Smooch, my vet says he is a angel when I am not there.
  19. We have a old large laundry tub out for the dogs, only one dog uses it. She runs laps round the paddock, into the tub, out the other end and on it goes all day. This is ES's crazy dog she put up in another thread. Smooch and Jimmy are inside with me in the air con and the other two just lay about under the trees.
  20. You could try your local fire brigade, they removed one from my house/shed a few years ago. They had all the necessary equipment to remove the snake.
  21. I bought this one http://www.brightlife.com.au/store/full-length-underblanket-p-1780.html I gave it a test run over night, but what I found it was nice and cool for a while but it heated up as it absorbed the heat from the body and whilst you stayed on it it couldn't release the heat. I guess the dogs don't stay on it for hours at a time. smooch does use it off and on.
  22. Last summer my working dog Jimmy decided it was a good idea to round up a brown snake. Only for the Indian Mayna birds Jimmy would probably have been bitten, the birds were making a hell of a noise so I got up to see what was going on, Jimmy was in the duck pen with nose glued to the ground, ran out of duck pen and straight past the birds, than I spotted Jimmy run in a circle on the lawn, I spotted the snake, yelled at Jimmy who responded straight away and left the snake. This summer i put 2 of the bird toy bells onto his collar hoping that a snake would hear him and go away. If it doesn't work I can at least hear if Jimmy is running around outside and check on him. Last week one of our rescue Galah's was going off his head, I looked outside and here is a brown snake going straight towards the cage, under the cage, I made sure both dogs were inside and wouldn't let them out unless I was with them. I don't know where the snake went, haven't seen it since. Edit to add Jimmy didn't bark at the snake, only for the IM I wouldn't have known there was a snake. At least the IM were good for something lol.
  23. Other than one loud bang, presumably from someone putting a cracker or something into the skip bin behind the laundromat (sensor light came on) no fire to be heard here thankfully.
  24. I am able to be home with Smooch as I am home 90% of the time, I do watch the weather forecast and if there are storms forecast I never go out. I know other people are not able to do this.
