  1. I have several bitches.....the queue forms on the left when one pees so that the last in the queue is the winner as her mark is the one on top. Enter the pee queen Luci (my banner) she will (if first to pee) return to the back of the queue to be last....remember she who pees last is the winner. It is serious business...but as she has got older her patience has waned. No longer happy to wait she does her own thing then runs across the yard to the last dog in the queue and hip and shoulders her off the spot mid stream. Then elegantly does her tinkle, wiping her back feet off in a triumphant manner before going back to whatever had her interest.
  2. Bullmastiffmum my vet was hesitant about specialist referral but after consultation with the specialist of my choice we are going on with the bloods as she has been off medications for the prescribed time and the test was designed by that same specialist to reflect my region. She has started on low dose pred in addition to the antibiotics for her skin pending the results....mainly to bring her comfort. I will get informed by my vet of the results and most likely if indicated attend the specialist as the next step. For a two yr old she has a file over an inch thick of tests. We have also done a blood profile to check her organs as she doesn't do well on meds...to keep a check on kidney/liver function. Stellnme I too have had mixed results with the malaseb...lol and yes Ive done the oatmeal, goat soap, holistic rinse path. Only when it goes wrong are we reminded that the skin is the biggest organ and at times diagnosis is complex! I have had dogs for many many years.....all breeds and I have to say this skin condition has been a real heartbreak for me as opposed to any other illness I have experienced frustration wise. I will let you know how the journey progresses.
  3. Animal lover i am aware of the calendula rinse and yes it is good for the itches..even used castor oil diluted to her skin. It did reduce the yeasty scent...but her skin lesions did not lessen....they didnt get worse however.
  4. Thanks Christine. Due to the skin inflammation she is not able to have the skin prick test. I am just aware that after much of the money I have spent that has been not very effective that I am not throwing money at yet another inconclusive test. All up with collection is $600.00 and with having spent over $300.00 last week with her skin issues I am becoming very distressed/frustrated at not finding the cause or a suitable treatment. Poor Zoe is not yet two years old and has had to endure much on this allergy rollercoaster...having never owned an allergy affected dog in my many years of dog ownership I have a whole new sympathy with those with similarly affected pets. It is horrible to see your pet so uncomfortable with so little options.
  5. In the ongoing saga that is my itchy poodle the veterinarian has advised a blood test for allergens. It is quite a cost (approx $500+) so I am wondering how common and /or experiences with this test. Were the results of any help or was it non specific?
  6. I have poodles and yes my vet has gone from recommending the ears get plucked to basic ear hair trimming do not pluck.Personally Im not fussed for those of my dogs that have fine ear hair..trimming is fine..however one of my dogs has thick hair that chokes the entrance of the ear canal should it be left. I would never dream of not plucking her ears. Yes I have noticed older vets recommend plucking but newer graduates I have seen are pretty much against it. Will be very interested to hear input. A poll on owners maybe?
  7. Has anyone here used or heard of the Australian product Healthy Mouth? It is a drinking water additive for dental/oral hygiene for dogs and cats. I was given a pamphlet by the vet on my recent visit. Looking for opinions.
  8. A truly special dog has passed. RIP Ness... to all her special people.
  9. Having read the discussion I see how highly emotive this is...I can only imagine how the owners of the dogs are feeling. I cannot cast judgement as all the assertions flying around with this incident the facts are not established and much may be hearsay. I do know that if I was faced with having a dog in kennels that was at high risk of fire in the area I would expect the business owner to be present and monitoring the situation on location where my dog is. I would expect a fire plan. I guess in the review of the SA incident, facts on the events leading up to and on that day will eventually become clear. My only experience with fire zones is that I have many friends in the Victorian Dandenongs. Even where there is no direct active fire they choose to evacuate and take refuge with their animals outside the risk region because if Ash Wednesday has taught anything is that things change or escalate very quickly.
  10. My question you say the house is empty...is that just of people? What is about that house next door that requires a guard dog? how do you live somewhere else but pay so much for a dog to live away from you? Makes no sense to me...nor would I want to know I would personally just advise her it is not wise to leave a dog unattended (perhaps remind her of the alleged recent rise of dognappers)maybe she will see the need to either rehome or take care of the dog at her new residence.
  11. I dont see the issue.... say I pay my years fees up front and make claims...they pay the same fee but in monthly installments and make claims. All fair. The insured dog/s die during the financial year...of course the balance of the premium has to be paid! Method of payment are different but agreed cost is the same. Despite not paying upfront the company I assume has paid all claims on that formula. If they want to avoid this- pay up the arrears in a lump sum and move on.
  12. Cavs, Dobes, Staffy and Staffy X, BullArab X, Poodle X and Beagles...lotsa Beagles. Strangely everywhere I go in my travels I see beagles, totally distracted, nose down...dragging their owners out for a walk.
  13. My goodness 22 years, what a lovely age to attain. A good dog. Says it all Rozzie. RIP Columbus.

    Bosco

Rest peaceful now Bosco. Sorry to hear of your loss.
  15. Been there...positively scary. My oldie used to shallow/deep long breath as she was sleeping...all with her eyes partly opened...used to get me every time. Hope the visit is positive for you.
  16. There is never a clear cut decision when oldies are getting to this stage in their life. For me, my head always has said when the bad days outnumber the good, the quality of life/dignity is dramatically reduced the time is getting very close. In my oldies when the simple pleasures and routines they participated in and enjoyed are frustratingly no longer for them I know I need to make a call. That being said our hearts will always be pained even though we have clearly thought it out. My thoughts with you Kirislin.xx
  17. My friend has just bought the Panasonic Lumix FZ200 it is quite light has 24-600mm as a superzoom with 2.8 across the range. Works great. No manual...but one can find info online after market manual.
  18. I think the condition is very relevant in this question should you be seeking an answer. If it is not your place, and you are asking with second hand information- it is pretty much a mute question...As you choose not to reveal facts (of condition) in order to define the situation how can an appropriate helpful answer be offered? What is your interest here to ask? Are you seeking to impress a friend with an opinion based on research based on facts not determined? Are you seeking to purchase a puppy in the future and wish to know about what health issues that are and are not congenital? Are you seeking to know what to ask the breeder of your future purchase that you should be asking about? Are you the breeder of the pup in question?
  19. Six Cheers for Stan ...Happy Birthday!
  20. I am not in rescue...but of late I see it is becoming almost a fad with people, one only needs to check out fb to see the amount of "rescues" appearing. On the outside of rescue looking in I have seen some inexperienced people take on more than they should or know and as a result people and animals are affected. Like vet nursing which is popular with animal loving teenagers it is more than just "I love animals", Ive seen many in work experience learn how not glamorous it is! Other than wanting to 'help' rescues Happy Camper do you have any aspirations to establish a rescue yourself? Rescue done right is expensive and time hungry path to go down, what is your knowledge base and focus? What is your motivation other than loving animals? Have you worked in reputable rescue and learned from a mentor for some time? I acknowledge people on this forum have been wronged by you but i ask as to understand who you are and such.
  21. Great shots glad to see the new toy. I have a d600 and since day one been wishing for a d800. How big is the standard file? Looks like I need to save for additional hard drives as well.... Love that "Fresh Out of the Box" moment :)
  22. So glad to read Maddie is back home with you. Please do see to it that you have a medico check out your injuries..at best you might need antibiotic coverage. I hope Stan continues to throw his hippo tantys as it sounds like an amusing distraction. I hope Stan will be a rock for Maddie as she recovers from the shock of what she has been through.
  23. Oh my, you are living my nightmare when I take to the streets for a walk with my girls. Healing vibes to Stan and Maddie. My heart goes out to you as you see your dogs go through such a distressing time through the inaction of some random stupid/s. Please take care of yourself as well Hazywal, may all your household be back together soon.
  24. Details here :click How sad for the dogs, hopefully the perpetrator/s get caught.
  25. I agree warnings should be sought, people may have been seriously affected by the shock of these images. This particular photographer I think he was insensitive to his audience by assuming his right to show them. He was a guest and should have sought permission from the club board knowing he felt the images may be confronting or graphic. These shots are very personal in nature so I assume he had permission from the families to show this "portfolio"...but then again unless the topic was about such photography I think it was a poor choice.
