  1. I am not posting to support/not support the petition. I was posting to show how the general public seems to me to be increasingly questioning the role of the RSPCA and similar organizations. Just the other week I was talking to people who have had friends bequeath many thousands of dollars to the society but are now deciding in light of things that have come to their attention are choosing not to do the same. These same people are finding other ways & organizations to support animal welfare. I guess my point is that of late it seems the RSPCA has been a topic of query and I was trying to show this and wondering if such questions are having an effect on its running generally and what will come of it. Many times on this forum & out in publications people are asking questions. I think it is a good thing. People questioning things do make this more likely than accepting things just the "way it is". I was putting it up as an example of people questioning. My personal opinion is that most operations in business and charity alike most likely have good & bad points people are going to disagree with....but the important thing is though emotional somewhere in the middle might be an answer perhaps.

  3. Thx for sharing..cuteness overload!
  4. With all the info drifting around the net these days i have come across these.. Obviously being the face of the Millon Paws walk doesnt get you any special priveleges...both the 2010 & 2012 dogs were alleged to have been pts after the event.... here is a posting with both stories..here Not sure if petitions get anythig done, but i guess it gets people thinking...here People are starting to think outside the square and check things out..
  5. Louis is gorgeous! So sorry to hear he had a hard past...thankfully he has a wonderful life now! daisys eyes are like windows to her soul. beautiful inside & out.
  6. i have had a chip encapsulated & come out through a cyst like eruption...pup was chipped at an early age..it had traveled from shoulder blades to a region near rump. Likely to be rechipped at vacc'n. Would there be an issue with this? Dog was dna tested as a pup...but i guess chip lost...will i be allowed to rechip/ is there a protocol?
  7. I have heard of this Sheridan I know of a case where a horse was down for days on end, had gaping sores/malnutrition & nobody stepped in. When a rescue did step in & nursed horse back to health despite several other horses being rescued from this persons keep, vet attendance, documentation etc..noting was done to this day by the rspca/authorities & the person still keeps horses. It seems hit and miss as to which animals get help, which people get prosecuted & what penalty they get. If an organisation is set up to care for animals, accepts charity to do so...why is it not bound to answer when someone asks a question? Is there a code of conduct/duty of care?
  8. Thank you I will forward these replies on
  9. I know this is a little OT but why is it when a horse is poorly treated/left for dead by a person it seems the authorities are not truly interested, yet a dog prosecution can happen so easily & attract hefty fines/costs? Maybe Im seeing it wrong? Is it becausde horses are deemed "livestock" Im glad people are brought to justice, but dont understand the costs awarded & rehabilitation required for 5 day old pups in good condition in the case above. I guess given more info it may be come apparent
  10. Loving the pics everyone! I think its delightful to have those "spirit" snapshots in our keep that define our dogs as one and onlys :)
  11. Ive put this up before..but I love this pic of my Luci...
  12. Sometimes a picture does capture a dog. Here is Rosie, while probably not technically correct it captures her nature- a little eccentric, a little easy going and great sense of fun! She is as happy as a slinky on an escalator!
  13. I like the new perspective tool, the different heal brush & the black/white preview for spots.
  14. Hey everyone who uses LR the new Lightroom 5 beta is up for download. Seriously! I just got LR4! Anyway some of the new features include color values CMKY, straight line healing and a non round healing brush (yippee). Remember it is a beta so I wouldnt be using it for any workflow, lest there be some bugs in the system...but if you are interested in having a play, go have a look.
  15. Personally I have always said where there was no line struck between responsible breeding of pups and the large scale of dog breeding for the pet market solely for profit, such legislation was inevitable. Too many people have been silent in the non commercial breeding of dogs in my opinion against puppy farms & the lack of distinction of raising healthy well socialised dogs on a small scale & the mass production of canine stock for the profitable commercial market. Activists have been very vocal. Why do breeders shy from comment when a large scale breeder is outed for bad practice/or a puppy farmer is investigated? It can be interpreted as condoning bad management? The lack of balance in opinion will always lead to blanket legislation I believe Sadly the losers are the small hobby breeders who prioritize health, socialization and such above profit.
  16. Im with the posters. The poodle & her owner shouldnt hold blame. So traumatic for the owner and tragic for the poodle. What if it had been a child? No matter what such a dog should not have been allowed to roam behind a gapped fence. Under the law it is illegal in Vic to not have access to the front door of a property due to an animal roaming. People should be allowed to walk on footpaths without fear of a dog lunging through a gapped fence. Just down the road from me there is a little snappy terrier that rushes people who walk past. If complaints were made to council I understand action would be possible to force the owner to contain her dog (esp the bitey end)
  17. Its just not the per day, in my area I am led to believe it is an initial fee plus per day. Factor in the fine for a dog at large and a family could face some 280.00, more if dog was wondering at night or not wearing a collar..and again more if unregistered as well.... My elderly grandfather once let my old dobe out (he left gate ajar as he did some gardening to surprise me...she was picked up by a council worker working on a strip 2 doors down, I called the ranger...I was there as the car pulled into the pound with her inside.....cost me $180.00 dog at large (day) a day of care at pound/release fee ($80.00)she didnt have a collar but was reg'd & chipped($60.00)and because she was a breed defined under the act ($200)and a further $200 for the fact we lived within 200m of a school. Yep, I could have got some landscaping done for that. Imagine if she wasnt registered!!!! This was about ten years back....I often wonder how much it would cost now. I understand fees, but sometimes I think it is really necessary to be so hefty?
  18. A friend of mine has just decided to keep a foster...a Mal X husky. It has a wonderful temperament & they are keen to know the best tools for the job when grooming, especially when the shedding season happens (as opposed to the smaller fur flying daily!)
  19. Sorry to hear of her passing. Kalais rest peacefully & painfree. Another sweet angel.
  20. Hes an absolute riot! I love his sense of fun! Gorgeous pics!
  21. I read about his diagnosis, so sorry to hear of his loss. R.I.P Big guy.
  22. I fully agree with this. I have spoken to some people I know the veterinary field who say due to the popularity in the breeding of cross bred poodles, cocker spaniels, etc..in large numbers (with a questionable maintenance of lineage ie very close matings, matings of untested dogs carrying recessive things like PRA) many more cases of cross breeds with such conditions are being presented. In my experience, 99% of all the crossbreds I owned lived into their later teens. One dog I lost at 12yrs. Of my last fifteen years of dogs all purebred, I have owned 6...all but 2 lived into their late teens. One was healthy but developed an osteo issue which saw her pts at 8yrs. Another died of heart failure at 10yrs. Strangely enough these 2 dogs were the only two of the 6 that I had purchased, so my knowledge was limited to what I was told & what I had seen. The other four were bred by me and as I knew several generations that made up the dogs personally I do believe that that made a difference. I think hybrid vigour might have worked in the past when the odd breeding occurred with the neighbours dog etc..two very unrelated dogs, in many cases crosses themselves. These days in the world of mass producing cross breds two dogs may very well have come from very close lines, if purchased from the same demographic. I agree with Kirislin it depends on having two healthy parents. I also agree with the comments above that a concientious breeder with personal knowledge of many generations that make up their stock would be more viable in order to purchase a suitable companion.
