  1. I have a very thunder phobic Whippet, I have in the past come home from work and thought the house had been broken into by vandels as I couldn't believe Yogi could do so much damage-curtains pulled down, fly screens shredded and the wood around the front door eaten like a beaver had chewed it. He has also leapt from being on the bed next to me and run for 8kilometres and been missing 12 hours after a loud clap of thunder even crossing the Freeway. I manage this to an extent by always checking weather forecasts and if there is going to be a storm Yogi is given a Bach remedy that has been blended for him, I place him in my bedroom and draw the curtains, I turn on the cd player with his enya cd and put his bed under my bed and throw a large bed spread over the whole thing so he is in a darkened cave. It seems to work okay, I do have some acp if neccessary but I do try to manage it without sedatives. I can understand not everybody can find a way to manage phobias and anxiety disorders and some are unmanageable, it is traumatising to walk into a house that has been trashed by a dog.Maybe for this man he has reached his limit.
  2. What an awful thing to happen Run free Pittie
  3. The dogs and I enjoying the xmas dol meet in Adelaide
  4. Bast@rds, what sick individuals, they should be thrown in a pit to be ripped apart.
  5. I was starting to have real problems with Abbie my newest Boofa on walks, she was oblivious to the martingale collar and the check collar seemed to make her pull harder, as I walk 2 dogs at the same time I was finding myself being pulled over a couple of times as the Whippet seemed to be being encouraged to bad behaviour as well I now get up an hour earlier so I can walk them sperately until behaviour improves with the two of them egging each other on BUT more importantly I have bought a front clipping harness for Abbie, the result was almost instant, she walks next to me and listens to my commands. I have a connection that goes from the front of her harness up to her flat collar(for my peace of my mind) as it all seems too simple and I worry about her slipping out of it.
  6. Nothing for me to get over Geo, I don't own restricted breeds This is the wrong attitude, and a very selfish perspective. We are all dog lovers and should stand up for the rights of all dogs regardless of their pedigree or lack of. I love all dogs and I will voice my objection to bsl to anybody who will listen. Black Bronson, I hope your breed of choice never becomes a target for bsl as you are alienating the people who would be ready to help you.
  7. Very true, as we dont know the facts, we shouldn't judge what may have happened other than two beloved family dogs lost their lives
  8. Unfortunately, whilest we are arguing over Pitbull/Amstaff are they the same or not, the legislators that are trying to ban them both must be rubbing their hands together with glee. ALL dog owners must unite against BSL as none of us know which breed will be next to face canine genocide as once the Pit Bull has been eradicated you can be sure that another breed will be on the hit list. I dont own either breed but I am unwilling to watch a breed be destroyed by politicians and the media without at least trying to lend a hand, unfortunately the media is unwilling to hear any pro Pit Bull points of view but surely we can continue trying to help. How? I dont really know but one thing is certain we must stop fighting each other and start fighting BSL. At the end of the day all dogs are woth fighting for not one breed more so than another.
  9. This morning I am planting a Cutamundra(golden) wattle in my garden in honour of Jed and her bravery and in memory of her babies that have passed over due to this tragedy. As my little tree grows I hope Jed continues to heal
  10. Oh, poor Tyson, I have been reading his thread hoping all would be well for him, thankfully he sounds like he has very loving owners who are doing everything possible to get him through this tragedy
  11. I have nothing to offer as at the moment I am having cat worries as well but I have tried to make plenty of hiding places and high spots around the house for the cat. My Whippet has always been a bit of a worry with the cat but now I have Abbie(Bull Arab X)I find myself constantly making sure that they are not using the cat as entertainment-they will both snuffle at him when he is rolling on the ground and Abbie rubs her nose on him, I am not sure what this is about and stop her when she does this, there is no mouthing but still I am not sure? I had a Staghound that had been bunny hunting many times and she was great with our farm cats but would rip a feral one apart if she had the chance, our cats knew instinctively never to run thankfully but it was always a concern trying to switch off the prey drive at home. ETA-Sorry to hijack the thread
  12. A magical photo, it tells a whole story in just one snapshot Reminds me of many years ago when I was roustabouting in the upper north of South Australia at a station called Katunga, every morning the sheep dogs would be let off their chains for a quick run around before shearing started for the day, lovely memories.
  13. I am sorry for your loss Di when a person(animal) dies it is quite common for some blood or other fluid to come out of any orifices within a couple of hours, foamy blood sometime indicates weak lining of the lungs but I have seen this happen a few times with people, it is also known as purging. I am not a medical person so am not too sure about the medical whys and wherefors however I do work in the funeral industry and have done transfers of deceased people.
  14. Jed has always been a beacon of knowledge and wisdom here on dol and I hope and pray that our candles help her to see that even in the darkest of times there is love and light to support her.
  15. Yogi and I will be there, the very old(Jess) and the very young(Abbie) can stay home with a bone
  16. What a lovely gentle girl Jasmine is, those photo's are lovely. Hopefully Jack is practicing for his future career as a Vet, imagine all the money you would save
  17. Words fail me Jed we need your wisdom and knowledge, you were often the voice of reason and sense in so many threads, hang in there you are needed and loved by your family, friends and animals. Rest in peace those who didn't make it
  18. Great idea, will be lighting a candle up here in the hills.
  19. We know it's owners fault not the dog or breed, but irresponsible ownership is not reserved for only Bull breed owners. There are stacks of irresponsible owners of other breeds that shoot out the gate and run around the street but don't appear to attack and bite as often as Bull breeds seem to Had the dog who attacked the Cav been a Golden Retriever for instance, the likelyhood of a GR mounting an attack I am sure would be a lesser possibility perhaps???. Rubbish, if the breed that had come out the gate and attacked the Cav hadn't been a Bull Breed the lynch mob wouldn't have saddled up and made an issue about the incident. Statistics are not worth the paper they are written on as they are always biassed one way or the other. A poster previously in this thread doubted the validity of a study/statistic by saying it was "Pro-Pitbull therefor inaccurate". I think a lot of attacks(not the one on this thread) are blamed on Bull Breeds due to mis identification by the general public, they have been forcefed images of violent Bull Breeds by the media and immediatly jump to the conclusion. As for Golden Retievers, I was chased down the road by a GR once as I walked my Whippet, it was quite frightening as he was hell bent on getting us to throw his tennis ball, all very cute and harmless but he was still a dog wandering off his property
  20. Due to a couple of newer members of DOL being so rabidly anti any Bull Breeds and blaming them for all the evils in the world today I find myself becoming increasingly HA and more and more in favour of PSL :D Abigail, out of curiosity what breed of dog is it that you have?
  21. I have never been able to watch Earthlings as the images would haunt me everytime I close my eyes. I am ashamed to be a human when I know the cruelty my kind inflicts on all the other life forms that have the misfortune to share earth with us. The trouble is ignorance is bliss for the majority of people, they think meat comes pre-packed and grows on supermarket shelves. I try to only eat what I could kill to survive, it sounds strange but living on a farm I have had to kill chickens, fish and the occaisional injured sheep so I am able to eat them, however no beef as I have bottled raised 2 calves (and still have them over 10 years later)and treated them like my own children. To eat beef would be unthinkable.
  22. I am so pleased Banshee has arrived into your care Jo, What a horrible situation she must have been in, I hope the other little dog is okay(pug?)as she sounds a bad owner
  23. Max and Zack you are vey brave little guys, I hope your recovery is swift and your healing is complete physically and emotionally Words fail me as to the inhumanity and callousness shown by the woman of the attacking dog, another oxygen thief ruining the chances of saving Bull breeds due to bad handling and ignorance.
  24. No, I dont think that th APBT is a lost cause but it will be a battle to change media, public(and other dog owners )perception of the breed. what we need are some high profile breed ambassadors out in the public eye as canine good citzens-almost impossible to do at the moment due to the APBT being demonized and unwelcome at many obedience clubs and many responsible owners unwilling to take their beloved dogs out into public for fear of persacution(sp?)
