  1. Please don't put shoe polish on your dog, regardless of it it works. Putting something toxic on a dog is pretty shit for cosmetic purposes. The Chris Stick will do the job just fine.
  2. I'd push for the referral, it's your right to ask for it and if they don't give it to you go to another Vet to get it. Without correct diagnosis you can't put a treatment plan together.
  3. I didn't carry my Dane around, I took him with me, I class socialisation more important than the rare case of disease. Just have a common sense approach and don't go to dog parks etc.
  4. That is not a good representation imo. Dirty (So many people say this about this facility), dogs escape (the very public case of the bulldog that the facility has not supported the medical costs), dogs get returned from boarding/training with wounds and emaciated (one of my rescues). Free range facilities aren't a good idea imo, attacks, injuries, too much exercise etc. What makes a good one? Not 1001 dogs, you need smaller numbers to ensure you know what's going on with all the dogs in your care. Well built kennels that are always clean. Big exercise runs with an appropriate number of dogs in them with size appropriate play mates and not over exercised etc. People who monitor the dogs in their care i.e. are they eating, are they injured etc. The training methods should herald results and the facility be honest and transparent in what methods they actually use.
  5. A lot of rescues do such a poor job in the communication stakes. It's not hard to reply to an email, it doesn't matter if you have a full time job, husband, kids, 100 dogs. If you have committed to being the contact person then you do it properly. We constantly hear complaints from people saying other rescues never got back to them or were rude to them, this turns people off rescue entirely. Now, in saying all of this, I make zero apologies for interviewing you for a dog, it's my job to place the right dog with the right family, with only 2 dogs returned in 10 years I'm doing a good job at placements. My phone number is not available because I don't run an animal shelter, I work full time and e-mail is how we communicate but I respond same day so it's never been an issue for me.
  6. Depends on which course you're looking at, the NCTM is really the only one I would recommend as the other ones are really just the made in china versions. Myofunctional is about understanding canine anatomy and movement, so when you do a gait analysis you're already picking up issues with the dog before you touch them, then you proceed with the hands on evaluation and continue with a treatment. All dogs benefit from muscle therapies. Most dogs have owies their owners aren't aware of, little owies then create compensation points and create bigger owies. In little dogs compensation issues from problems such as patellas is common and you can give dogs relief from that for sure. Its very individual based on the dogs conformation, their activity, their diet (diet feeds muscles) etc.
  7. Hi Guys, For those located in Sydney and can get themselves to our Seven Hills home clinic, current foster dogs are welcome to attend our rescue clinic sessions free of charge. Offering: Muscle therapies such as myofunctional massage, emmets therapy, laser & heat therapy. All sessions will begin with a gait analysis. Qualified and accredited. PM me or email [email protected]
  8. Perhaps but why? Is it affecting her quality of life? Image a human having a breast reduction....it's not a small surgery and you just wouldn't put a dog through it.
  9. Why in earth would anyone support this? This is an uneducated and knee jerk reaction to not comprehending the bigger picture. We use Gumtree all the time to promote rescue dogs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Gumtree, it is no different to any other avenue to promote dogs. It's how people screen families which is what matters and if a family doesn't do this well it doesn't matter what advertising avenue they used.

  11. Myth. Your dog could have good poos and survive on the lowest quality food i.e. 2 minute noodles > this is not the best food for the dog. Some foods are too rich for dogs, some dogs (most) have food intolerance, so it's finding a good quality food that is going to have positive gene expression (Nutrigenomics) and sit well with your dogs tummy. We need to stop promoting "the best food is what your dog does best on" because people often only consider the 'now' not the future and usually only consider what comes out of their dog at the 'now'. Nutrition is much bigger picture, and we know this already in regards to our own bodies but for some reason we choose to ignore it for canines maybe because cost is prohibitive or we don't have the same want for our dogs when it comes to health and longevity that we do for our human families or are we under the incorrect assumption that good poos means the dog is on the best food? Palatable is certainly important but it needs to be considered where this is coming from, is it from high quality bio available proteins or artificial methods / low quality proteins lacking bio availability? It's certainly true that one dog may thrive on Blackhawk Fish & Potato and another may not, I think it's logical in terms of individuals no matter what species. Dog guardians should consider the terms "Thrive" "Survive" "Do well on" carefully. As canine guardians we need to become experts in what goes into our dogs bodies and not just go for brands or packaging. Some of the more well known kibbles out there such as RC and Advance have some of the lowest quality ingredients in some of their lines. The ingredients panel is in clear view for all canine guardians to read, it's our job to understand what those ingredients are and what they do to our dogs bodies now and in the future.
  12. BH has better ingredients anyway vs RC, so your switch was for the better.
  13. 14. We're a big fan of local raw honey and have been using it for digestion purposes but started also using it to build up a tolerance to local pollens for the allergic dog I have.
  15. Many Dane Breeders still remove them. After my Canine Myofunctional course I would request that they stay on especially for active dogs, dogs who do a sport etc because they are actually used regardless of what someone else tells you. Some Danes don't have flat dew claws, they have weird ones that stick out and these can be an issue in terms of catching them and injury so in those cases removal could be a viable option. But if we look at the main reason why they are removed which is to create a nice clean line of the leg then we have to consider whether removing a functional body part (yes they are attached and by 5 tendons) is acceptable. I acknowledge that some rear dew claws don't have strong attachment points anymore and in some cases can be a bit mutant so for the purpose of this reply I'm commenting on front declaws.
  16. Hi, Our 13 year old Dane went in the rear, it's pretty common occurrence in elderly big dogs. If it's a nerve function problems sadly there is little that can be done apart from making their remaining time as nice as possible. We tried a harness but she didn't like it, I would just help her when she needed it, thankfully I work from home and that was do-able. I do Myofunctional and Thermal Therapy in Seven Hills if you wanted to give it a try.
  17. You order it online with Nutriscan and they post it to you from America.

  19. I understand, my (RIP) Dane who was highly allergic was not able to be off meds long enough to get intra dermal, we did do both types of blood allergen testing and desenstising injections with no luck sadly. He lived on a low dose of Cortisone.
  20. Brush tails are a big feral problem in NZ aren't they? I wonder if there are any problems with sourcing food in that way though. Yes, they are a pest and we're allowed to kill them. They eat the eggs of our ground laying birds such as the Kiwi. Given many a Kiwi sees Possums in the same light as Rats I'm not sure too many Kiwis would be spending a decent amount on feeding it to their dogs.
  21. That isn't right, your Vet should ask for a re-test. All dogs would react to something. It happened to us and got a re-test. Also, the thing about the blood tests is they're not that accurate, especially the food portion, you'd be better getting intra-dermal done and then you know what you're dealing with. I have to say I was quite disappointed in this thread people suggesting you should use rinses on your dogs rather than going down the diagnostic route at least to begin with. We need to stop touting calendula rinses as a miracle cure and suggest them as supplementary to actual diagnosis.
  22. Says who? Would you eat a meat that had dye in it? Don't take other peoples word for things, look into what is actually in the dye and do your own research.
  23. I think it's safe to presume that a a dye added to your dogs food isn't awesome. I'd be looking into it further, what exactly is it, research it and decide if you want your dog to consume it.
