Help Please! Problems With Going On A Walk
sas replied to Alison Ma's topic in General Dog Discussion
I hope you mean a check chain rather than a choke chain....a check chain becomes a chock chain when you put it on incorrectly and it can't release. A check chain wouldn't have worked for you because you haven't trained the dog how to walk on one because you probably haven't be taught how to use one. You gotta ditch the normal harness. Just because one tool works for someone with a similar breed doesn't mean it will work for yours and then as I said previously a tool isn't going to work unles it's fitted correctly and you have been shown how to use it properly. ________________ I never intentionally choke her, its because she pulls so much she ends up vomiting. I'm going to try a martingale collar, see how Lola goes with that. Thank you :-) How about letting a trainer help you find a suitable tool and show you how to use it? ________________ But what will I do in the meantime, keep using my harness? I'm pretty sure the trainer who I mentioned would be able to squeeze you in this week. What I was aiming at when I was saying before you trying anymore different tools just wait until you see a trainer otherwise you're wasting your monye on tools that your dog is going to ignore -

That is so true!! Also- with choosing a trainer- don't use anyone whose methods make you uncomfortable, or who appears to hurt the dog. Choose someone experienced, and who discusses everything with you Also....try and stay away from Fanchise places like Bark Busters and Dog Tech unless you have heard wonderful testimonels first hand. -

Help Please! Problems With Going On A Walk

_________ I try to walk her as often as I can. Lately, she goes for walks on Saturday and Sunday. We take her to the beach on the weekend which normally tires her out for a day or two. That's not enough....I think you know that already. A dog especially one with the problems that she is presenting needs to get out everyday to remember how to be a dog and to incorporate training into that walk. I'd probably be taking a high energy dog out twice a day. -
Did you not feel comfortable interupting the man doing that to his dog?

Calm Calm Calm, you don't even want to put her collar on if she's not calm, just wait it out. Next is not to even walk out the front door if she's not calm and she doesn't go out before you. Every step of the way she has to learn to be calm, you'll be suprised at how quickly she picks it up when you're consistent with this method. You say you use a harness....do you mean a specialised no-pull harness or just a normal harness? A normal harness teaches your dog to pull as that is the purpose of a harness....sled dogs and the like.... A no-pull harness with a d-ring on the front could assist you. The thing is, any training tool you use, you need to make sure it is fitted correctly and get guidence on how to use it, this is probably why the Halti didn't work as the dogs needs to conditioned to it and fitting it correctly is also very important. I'd reccomend you hook up with a Trainer and/or Behvaiourist to help you work through these challenges. In Sydney, NSW I reccomend Craig Murray from Premier Dog Training who can come out to you and work with your in your dogs own environment: 0408 113 874. -
"the Sooner The Better" What Sort Of A Comment Is That?
sas replied to Pepi's topic in General Dog Discussion
Are you sure you didn't mis-interpret the comment? The sooner the better is often meant that the dog doesn't suffer long term with illness so it's not actually a horrible thing to say. Rescue people aren't in for the money....get involved in rescue and you'll see there is no money in it at all...most rescuers live on the bones on the ass to help these dogs. -
Are we seeing more and more of them because people keep breeding dogs with skin issues and immune defciences?

Oh boo hoo....she did the crime...she pays the fine.

Do You Have A Dog With Food Allergies?
sas replied to ~Aimee~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dog reacts to some foods, I can't tell you whether they are food intolerances or actuall allergic reactions to the food. My dog is a general allergic dog, allergic to too many things to list and these types of dogs tend to develop more allergies/intollerances as time goes on. My boy is 3 and after being on a Salmon diet for a year, I just switched him to the Vets all natural diet, 3 weeks in and I ran out and gave him some salmon and he had a mighty reaction to it....skin eruptions, really upset tummy and lots of chewing and itching - mind you this was Salmon out of a can so he could have been reacting to a preservative. -
The Bunnings Compost Pen is the one that sticks in my mind, what do you think Bunnings made of it all? LOL
-
Puppies ears do the most bizare things, I wouldn't be too concerned. If your pup was a show pup you would probably be taping the ears during teething if that was relevant to your breed.
-
My Great Dane has tear staining and anything he licks stains in the same way.....he's just gone onto the Vets All Natural Diet, I think we're 4 weeks into an 8 week trial and no new staining and existing staining is fading away. I think it's great there is a product like Angel eyes but I think it's important to look at the inner workings of the dog as well.
-
LOL I don't mind Ceasar, like any trainer you take what you want and leave what you don't want but that video was fricken funny!
-
I'm so sorry to her about your Grandad *hugs* Another Angel you know...
-
I believe that is a known side effect of Pred.
-
I'd tell him to piss off. I know you care for the dog but technically the dog isn't yours anymore, you're not allowed to see the dogs so the dogs aren't yours. He's trying it on. If you do decide to pay, don't pay a dime until you've spoken to the Vet, got a second opinion and the quote in writing on the Vets letterhead.

Obedience Instructors Going Too Far!
sas replied to Miss Squish's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
To me it's simple, never let another person treat your dog in a way you're not comfortable with and if they do tell them so and report them. If you think the club is clicky and someone has asaulted your dog then report them to the RSPCA/ -
What has been your experience with prednisone? Varied How was it administered? Tablet Forgive my ignorance but does it come in tablet form that can be crushed and put into food? You'd probably just want to chuck it in a piece of hotdog or something to ensure the dog gets the required dossage. How often is it given? It's individual and as prescribed by your Vet. Were there any side effects in your case? Depends on the dossage and length of time the dog is on it. My dogs most common side effects are thin coat, thin skin that bruises easily, skin infections, sunken skull. We didn't have weight gain, but do have increase water intake and in-turn increased toilet breaks.

Referral to a Dermatologist, if you don't you will regret it as the condition gets worse as the years go on and it may start to spiral out of your control. Sorry that you're going through this.
-
Crossing everything that you find him really soon!
-
You were polite, I would have told him to get his dogs onlead....doesn't matter if his dogs won't bite or not.

Hi Barly, From knowing other people whose dogs have bloated they have bloated under none of the typical senerio's, so really the best you can do is go by the theories out there: 1) Provide Breakfast & Dinner rather than one large meal 2) Eat off the floor, a study has shown the higher the bowl is raised the higher the inccidence of Bloat 3) Have 30-60 minutes either side eating. 4) Keep dog in a calm frame of mind, remove stresses to the dogs environment It's hard not to go over the top when you are worried about Bloat.
-
Danes are a bloat prone BREED regardless of whether the Mother or Father have bloated - the same with any other deep chested Breed. That's not to say I don't think there is a family link but I just wanted to make a mention about the breed being prone as a whole.
