In my opinion the Clicker is the way to go, a verbal marker isn't accurate enough imo in this case. The link posted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHgBvnQ71ss is of a great clicker trainer, I've learned alot from her other videos. When cutting I do make sure that I hold the nail firmly so the pressure of the cut doesn't feel uncomfortable to the dog, I tend to snip both sides of the nail and then an across cut, less stressful than one big clip that can cause discomfort if the nails are super hard.

Licking paws and legs aren't uncommon. Some older dogs lick their legs (joints) where they are sore and some dogs lick their feet and legs due to allergic reactions. A skin scraping isn't expensive, ask your Vet to quite it, I think it cost me $40 last time I had one done, they look at the slide under their own microscopes so there isn't a need for it to be expensive. The tablets that cost a lot, was that Atopica?

What Diet Should I Be Giving My Dane Puppy?
sas replied to Maddi1146's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ok coolies Which Science Diet are you feeding? The thing with growing Dane puppies is they need to be feed certain percentages of protein/phos. With your Breeder, are they are Registered Breeder who are knowledgable enough to give you advice on what to feed your puppy, although Dane puppies should be fed certain percentages different lines do well on different foods i.e. you have different style Danes; Euro, American, Italian etc. -

depends if you can or cannot. Who can't? It's not difficult. People can make things happen if they want to. My opinion is to feed the dog seperately until they are calm and have slowed down with their eating and then bring them together tethered....set the dogs up for success step by step. -
Wow... THAT good eh? Maybe I should go check it out. Is it a one day/evening thing or once every week for a few weeks? Luci Ellem Obedience classes are on Monday nights, I think the beginners start from around 7pm. You can't be precious if you go to Luci Ellem, she will help you but you have to be willing to let her.

Too cute Vickie!

Breed is irrelevant when it comes to basic training. I have one of the dumbest most stubborn breeds but they have absolutely fine basic training, the younger one is at an advanced level. It's just education and getting help from those who are experienced enough to give it to you....but you kinda have to be willing to go out of your way to get to the best people ya know

What Diet Should I Be Giving My Dane Puppy?

So you've just acquired this Dane now? As others have said, pop into the Dane thread and you'll get some different ideas. Dane pups should be fed a strict diet. -
Fluppies will custom you one up too. 4 Stretch Lyrca in a light colour is going to be the better way to go.

Don't try and soothe your dog, just ignore the behaviour. I would still be wanting to feed them in seperate areas where they can not see each other so they can fully relax. -

Do you recommend this for single dogs too? I always thought that scattering a dogs meal through your backyard before leaving for the day gives them something to do and keeps their minds entertained. Obviously if you have more than one you would never do this as it could cause guarding and fights, but what about one non-food aggressive dog? That works for about 10 minutes (keeping them occupied), it would be better to physically exhaust the dog befor eyou leave the hosue if the dog is a problem during the day and provide interactive activities for the dog such as interactive toys, sand pits eyc. -

You don't get to choose who the top dog is apart from you. Your dogs change their positions during the day. Humans create problems between dogs by trying to dictate this, dogs have a natural order, leave it to them and just repremand inappropriate behavour. Dogs are pack animals, breed is irrelevant. When dealing with 2 dogs give attention to the calmest first and that's how you get calm behaviour. -

I'd just treat them like the domestic dog they are, put their food in a bowl and give it to them, don't set them up for failure so feed them apart until you have done the neccessary training. -
Unfortunately Carmarna is like 1-2 hours drive for me. I will probably need the trainer to come to my house and give me tips. It's a one hour drive for us too, a lot of people travel 2 hours for her classes...she's that's good....I guess it depends on how frustrated you are

This was part of a Dane thread challenge, although that video is good and shows a smarty pants dog that is excelling at that, there is another video which is more instructional: http://www.youtube.com/user/kikopup#p/u/41/xsvNvK8T1z8

Can Eveyone Please Check Out My Golden Retriever
sas replied to Emmajin's topic in General Dog Discussion
He very well could be purebred but not pedgree and there's nothing wrong with desexing pet puppies at 6 months. He could very well be purebred... I said its possible he aint. I've never seen a coat that short on a Goldie. If you told me he was a Lab/GR cross I'd believe you. Nothing "wrong" desexing at 6 months SAS but if I wanted a larger boy to mature a bit more, I'd delay it. The earlier you desex em, the leggier they get. He's a pet pup not a show dog, average owner doesn't care or know what the breed standard says -
mmm what did the Vet say about this?
-
Maybe time to seek a new vet Sounds like a plan.

We use Goats Milk soap on our allergic dog.

He very well could be purebred but not pedgree and there's nothing wrong with desexing pet puppies at 6 months. Some young dogs really struggle with their weight, it's seen a lot in Danes, they start to mature and then they start to fill out a bit. You can up the food a bit if you want but there is nothing wrong with a breed like yours growing on the light side, less strain on joints. An hour a day exercise might be a bit too much for your breed, hopefully a Breeder will come on and let you know their opinion. If your dog is healthy, wormed and healthy then don't worry too much unless your dog is actually refusing its' food. -
Rysup, Do your brown spots stay forever if you don't use this?
