  1. However on the other side of the coin, I'm quite happy for other dogs to correct Gus in the same manner. I know he can be quite rude when the mood strikes, being an exuberant breed and an adolescent male he has his moments. I don't shield him from other dogs growling if he gets in their face and should he get a nip, in most cases he deserved it. Dogs speak dog much better than me...
  2. I had a similar incident yesterday. Gus signed up to be in some promotional filming for work, so he was at work with me all day (not as fun as it sounds, BTW!) A few other people had dogs too, including a young pup who had designs on Gus's pigs ear, he growled and gave her a bark, to which the owner of the pup jumped back and made a big deal of it, I hadn't come across it before (new situation, high value treat, inappropriate puppy about at meal time) so I shushed him and carried on talking. The more I think about it the guiltier I feel. If I was eating and some Dingus tried to take my plate I'd be shitty, especially if it was something yum I don't get often. I feel like a right jerk now, but lesson learned. He certainly wasn't nasty to the pup and I don't believe he would even get as far as a nip but the owner just made such a huge deal of it I felt obliged to do something, which I guess stems from embarrassment?
  3. So sorry guys. We didn't make it today as we found out early this morning my lovely grandma has terminal cancer. I totally forgot about it, tbh. Not that I'd have been any fun at all today! Jo, send me your bank details and I'll pay our share to you, I'm sure you'd have been out. So sorry, just a shitty thing!
  4. What a horrible end that could have been for that little dog. Bastard.
  5. Wait, I don't get it. Have you seen a vet? Why would it be wishful thinking if you have a vet diagnosis? Does your vet know about her heart issues?
  6. I'm a little surprised the breeder mentioned registering yourself with your canine council almost as an afterthought.
  7. Yes Maybe, depends really. We didn't meet our dogs parent/s until he was about 6 months old, but as they're pretty well shown and documented we were happy to go with the flow. We did spend months building a trusting relationship with our breeder though, so it was hardly spur of the moment. I also asked others who had met the parents what they were like and how they behaved at shows etc. Frankly I found asking people who knew the breed what was what to be more helpful than myself watching them strut around the ring, but we are a pet home. And yes yes yes. Won't touch a dog who we can't be assured has had a good start. We watched ours grow via Facebook from day dot.
  8. Temporary. ;) We have all heard that from many DOL mouths before. ;) I getcha. ;)
  9. Ahem, and when were you planning on sharing the news? Hmm?
  10. The beady eyed assassin does the same, tries to goad Stan into playing but he knows he'll get the rough end of the stick so he just tries to saunter past her. She play bows in front of him, blocking him from coming inside, she's a thousand times quicker than him too so he can't even outrun her. Exactly! And then the poor boys give you the 'mum, help!' face. God knows how many times Gus has been in trouble for her work. She's smart enough to rile him up and watch him go, so he more often gets caught at the tale end, but I always know who started it.
  11. This morning I watched Princess Bitchface singlehandedly shred a plastic bag of hay, spread the hay around the yard and tear around the yard with the plastic trying to goad the sleeping Gus into playing her game. She's also more likely to snap when confronted with rude digs, despite being somewhat rude herself, whereas Gus just comes to me looking sad when another dog snaps at him. No more females for us!
  12. That is a worry for me. Would appear to contradict the premise of feeding raw then. I will continue to examine the whole scenario. Horrible Herbert is 10 months now. I want to ensure his diet is totally OK. I also found that the amount of meat I was adding to the mix was the same as I give them now on raw alone, so definitely more expensive. Having said that, there are some real success stories out there, but didn't work for us, and I wasn't overly keen on it.
  13. I wonder though, did the people not notice that many socks going AWOL? I like to think I would...
  14. We had no joy either. Honestly our dogs do better of raw with the odd table scrap. Gus lost coat condition and Rosie lost muscle. Does seem full of oats and fillers to me.
  15. Does anyone know if growing calendular flowers to infuse into warm water for skin irritations has the same benefit as buying the tea? There's a store selling 200 seeds for $4, which seems like a good investment if it works. Wonder if there's a specific variety? Also not sure if this should be here, Off Topic or the garden thread! Haha.
  16. This. They're smart enough to know when they can get away with it too. Might be good as gold when you're around but the second your back is turned...haha. I'd definitely not leave them free range. Not even with a dog I trusted not to eat them.
  17. We just adopted two with our whippet. First off, I'd never trust them alone. I know she's pretty drivey and I wouldn't want to risk it. I know another DOLer, perhaps Kirty, has a beautiful whippet who is quite happy to interact with the chooks. Is she on the drivier side? How old is she? We did some LAT exercises and rewarded her for leaving it, and ignoring them. Best tip is to dog proof your coop and don't expect too much from.her, they're smart about it, and I know Rosie would absolutely have a chook if she could get to them...
  18. Not if they know. If a dog acts up badly at the Airport, it can also be denied loading onto the flight. That is clearly written in their conditions. Interesting.... I can vouch for this. The other option is to have a wooden guard dog crate hired for a few hundred dollars, and even then if the airline isn’t comfortable moving them, they simply won’t. What’s the bet they start fundraising next?
  19. He's missed a lot of development leaving his mum so young, poor thing. When puppies whine, sometimes they need to wee or eat or need attention. I don't know of flatly ignoring all the time is a good course of action. My 17 month old still whines to go wee.
  20. Definitely the cops. Sound like a potentially disastrous situation!
  21. Clyde, not everyone is cut out to rehab a dog like that and nor should they be expected to. Sounds like OP just wanted an easy, companionable dog. I'd do exactly the same and have her PTS peacefully. Frankly I think Lauren should be absolutely commended on making the hard call. Many would have sent her back to be moved on. I also don't know.if its about size either, Gus's best mate at the park at the.moment is a tiny elderly Chi. Its.more.about.matching the two temperaments and styles.
  22. No one here will blame you or hold it against you at all. I'm so sorry you've had to go through this, I'd be having her euthanised too.
  23. I'm glad its not just me! Mum is a silent judger, she's appalled at the amount of money we spend on them, which isn't much, but more than she would. Other than that I let my pooches speak for themselves. We have made huge leaps with Rosie, and Gus is growing up to be a beautiful dog. Whatever! Haha.
