  1. I usually pay on my credit card, then hope the claim goes through before I get charged interest. There is an option for them to pay vets directly, though not many vets are willing to take on that burden. All you can do is explain the situation to your vet and ask if they would consider it...
  2. oh man, I think I need a bigger house...
  3. Nix goes through phases where he does this and I'm sure he just feels like a wander around the yard and eating some possum poo while it's fresh... drives me nuts! Fortunately he's currently in a sleeping well phase - I think the cool weather helps him want to stay curled up in bed... I don't really have much to offer other than sympathy - I'm a massive sucker too :) And a very light sleeper!
  4. For my lab I use an undercoat rake, and then the zoom groom takes care of the top coat. I've just always been surprised by how good a job it does! and it's gentle so he doesn't mind it.
  5. Hey guys, sorry for not updating earlier - was a very draining weekend hanging out with my Mum :) I ended up not taking him to the vet - his behaviour was very perky and my husband thought I was being ridiculous. If he was even a little bit lethargic I would have gone anyway, but in the end he was ok. I took your advice and fasted him saturday night though. He did a little dry gagging saturday night (after not doing anything untoward all day!) and I was starting think maybe it was a cough?! Sunday he was absolutely fine all day though. He ate ok - no spewing and normal poos, so I think it was just a bug. Thanks again for listening, as always!! Oh god MRB - you must have been irate with that kennel!!! Hope she's doing better today.
  6. OMG you poor thing! I can't believe you broke your wrist! Like you need more drama! I'm not really sure, but will be reading with interest - I get so sick of Nixon standing on my feet all the time. But, I always make sure I'm sitting down when we're at the park - all their brains seem to go out the window when they're racing around with each other...
  7. Thanks Pers, my thought is a blockage too, but he doesn't really eat weird things, apart from sticks. He's definitely not a destroyer... Maybe it's just a bug. Just bad timing - my mum is visiting today and I had things planned to keep her from stressing me out. I guess she's probably coming to the vet with me now!
  8. Thanks Gruf, I called the vet and mentioned the grapes. I have a tentative booking for later this morning, and they said we can cancel if needed. I've just fed him a bit more food to see if he can keep it down, so will wait and see! I honestly don't see how it could be grape related, but I can't help being paranoid!
  9. So, my darling boy is worrying me again... Nixon spewed last night before dinner - some bile and a big wad of grass. He seemed ok. We waited a while then gave him some dinner and seemed fine. No vomiting that we could tell. This morning he's just vomited up all his breakfast, about 20mins after eating. Undigested kibble. He just re-ate the small pile, so will see how that goes I guess... He still seems fairly perky otherwise. Just debating whether to try to see a vet this morning before they close for the weekend, or wait and see. If he seemed more distressed I'd just go, but undecided at the moment.
  10. Basically there is petplan, then everyone else is underwritten by hollards and the policies are essentially the same. Petplan has the best coverage, but they've also become significantly more expensive in the last year or so.
  11. When Nixon decided he didn't want to sleep in our room anymore, we started closing the bedroom door, for exactly that reason! On the odd occasion we leave the door open, he'll come to visit at all hours and come nudge my arm for a cuddle multiple times per night! Super annoying. There's also the early morning wakeups which aren't suitable for a weekend sleep in, so the door stays shut! (doesn't stop him from breathing through the crack and making sad moaning noises though!) Now, he only bothers to get up from his bed in the loungeroom if he actually needs to go to the toilet and I know if I hear him outside our door during the night that he needs to go out. He doesn't make any noise, but I'm a light sleeper and I hear his tags jingling :) I was so paranoid about things getting trashed through the puppy stages, that it came as quite a shock to me to realise that I could actually leave him safely with the run of the house - and nothing gets destroyed! I now leave him inside on wet days too, and haven't had a single negative incident. still can't believe it :)
  12. I'd get another opinion from someone else at petplan - I don't see how they could refuse to pay in the future. And a guy at a trade show might not have the most complete understanding of their policy either. What would be most useful, is for your vet to put in writing that a conservative approach is a valid option, and he gave you two options to choose from.
  13. Ps, sorry if I sound harsh, I do feel for you a lot! I remember those early days so well, and I was in tears a LOT, and SO overtired. I just think you clearly need to reconsider some of your firmly held rules or you will be making it so much harder for yourself.
  14. Baby puppies ARE needy, there's no getting around it. If you can't cope, send him back and get a mature dog. We are all giving you the same advice because we've all been there before. If you want to sleep well, have him in your room. It won't be forever, they do grow up! Our boy moved himself out of our room at about 9 months. It was his choice, and we're all happy now! I still wouldn't want him to sleep outside, because no doubt he'd spend the whole time barking at possums and being a PITA. During the day, I'd have shorter play sessions, then give him something to keep him busy without you, until falling asleep. He should be sleeping a lot at this age.
  15. Puppies are so so hard. As rebanne said, have his crate in your room. It won't be forever! We persisted for a month of hell before moving him in with us and life got so much better when we did. Big hug, you are an amazing owner because you care so much!
  16. hmmm. if he's on your bed he might be willing to sleep in. Nixon used to sleep in our room (on his bed, not in crate), and at about 9 months he decided to move out. He now happily sleeps in the lounge on his bed, but still thinks we should be waking up at 6am most days. He just does heavy breathing under the door when he thinks we need to get up :) ETA, I doubt he'll pee on your carpet, but Nixon did once release some anal fluid on my doona by licking his butt on one of the rare occasions he's allowed on the bed! ICK!!!! SO GROSS!!!!
  17. I think Ernie will be fine. I have jammies for Nixon, but mainly because they look cute and make me feel a bit better. I usually only use them if it's a particularly cold night. I think he quite likes them though :) Or sometimes I'll tuck him in with a blankie :) Labs are tough though, and neither Nix or Ernie are baby puppies anymore - they can probably regulate their own temperature just fine.
  18. I don't think it's unreasonable for your vet to check the puppy - particularly as they live in the area. I would stick to your guns on that point. The 72 hours, well, I'd be a little flexible on that - it wasn't that much over. Without your vet's advice, you have to wonder if they're trying to screw you over to get a free puppy...
  19. poor baby, sounds like a sensitive soul. thanks for the update :)
  20. denali, it apparently works on ticks for 4 months, but only 3 months for fleas...
  21. I just read that they say it's safe for pregnant and lactating dogs, so that's pretty impressive! If they're willing to put that on the box, it must be fairly well tolerated? I also read that it's been out for a while in Europe and has been well received there.
  22. There is another thread somewhere, but it's pretty new so I don't think anyone would have tried it yet! Sounds amazing though!
