  1. I showed him (and Sumo) to my husband. He just shook his head and left the room. :)
  2. A little off topic, but YES! My bosses dog has been to hanrob twice in the time I've worked for him (less than 12 months). Both times his Doxie boy has come back sad and mopey. One time he had a clear injection site and reaction to what ever they had given him - he had hives for 3 days and both times he's had chronic gas and the runs. Really unpleasant for an "office dog" and his co-workers. I would not touch that joint for all the tea in china. Makes me cross - especially considering the price he pays to have him there (I'm sure its not 37 a day)! To be back on track - I'd be politely telling the first place it's gross they think they can up prices like that without warning and they should honour their current bookings. So gal you found another place for them.
  3. I've always fed my dogs on commercial wet and dry. Our Rotty cross lived to just over 15 on nothing but Pal his whole life and my Foxie girl lived to almost 15 on a mix of what ever was going cheap from the supermarket at the time - she finished off her last 18 months on ID wet and dry and cooked chicken veg and rice. My new man is MUCH fussier then either of them ever were and also gets quite stinky (in terms of general body odour - not gas so much) when he's on regular supermarket food. So far (in the 9 weeks he's been home) we've tried Hills Mature Small bites - he was stinky and went off them within a week of being home VIP dog sausage (yes - I know, not dry) he was stinky and went off them within 3 weeks Homecooked - I worry about the nutritional balance and I am time poor Ziwipeak - Seems to enjoy it but can go whole days without touching it - body odour almost gone, eye goobies cleared up VIP grain free from Woolies. Seems to really enjoy it. Early days yet but goobies and stinky don't appear to be present. Hoping to settle into a good quality dry to supply nutritional needs with raw, RMB and home cooked to supplement / add variety.
  4. I can absolutely say that most commercial yoghurts aren't made on goats milk or low lactose. 180 grams of most commercial yoghurt is enough to make me very very ill and I'm a LOT larger than any dog. That said, I can sneak about 100 grams of good quality, low sugar, full fat dairy into myself before I feel ill. Jalna is one such example, chobani is another. Basically - lactose is a sugar, which you need an enzyme to break down. Full far, low sugar dairy tends to have less lactose and therefore is more digestible for anyone (any dog?) who is lactose sensitive.
  5. Just grabbed a bag of the VIP grain free (duck and veg) Mr. Stinky Picky Pants seems to like it and it's not making him stinky. Chances are he'll go off it in a fortnight but until then I'm rotating it with his Ziwipeak and chicken mince. Will update when he goes off it.
  6. I tried some stuffed loo roll centres today - seem to be acceptable to Mr Fussy. I like the idea of a paddle pool but also don't want him tracking water into the house :)
  7. You don't have to feed exclusively raw for your dogs to enjoy meaty bones. So long as you supervise them (mainly / especially while they're young), make sure bones are appropriate size and NOT cooked they're fine and an important tool for boredom busting, dental health, diet and general happiness.
  8. I look at Scottie sometimes and he looks so much like Guin its not funny. Other than that he's SO different to her we often call him the anti-Guin.
  9. (Hope this is the right forum. Did a search - didn't find anything similar.) What's your favourite enrichment for a non-food driven dog. Scottie has a foot ball and a soccer ball which we rotate a treat ball which we stuff sometimes but we doesn't really get it / understand where the food comes from tennis balls a floppy monkey/bunny (several - as their arms, legs and ears tend to just fall off) a lamb bone raw meaty bones chicken wings a nylabone tennis ball on a rope We've also tried breakfast in a cardboard box. He missed break those few days :S We try to rotate (I can get a bit lazy) he never gets everything above at the same time ...but ... the question is - what else do you use / can I try for a non-food driven dog? I considered a sandpit but don't want him tracking sand into the house. I am also considering an "Adventure box" and / or some scents sprayed around the yard. (our yard is a boring small, no shelter, no shade box surrounded on two sides by brick and 2 sides with colurbond) but looking for other easy to implement options
  10. I must confess I thought that a Vallhund was a grey corgi the other day. I'm not real flash when it comes to breeds. Thankfully I didn't make some dumb comment.
  11. Urgh. Sadly - it's often the vet nurse / receptionsit who is tasked with this duty. (Speaking from experience) some clients can get very shitty when you can't or won't write the "breed" they want to call their animal. I tried putting Cocker Sp x Poodle on a vac certificate once and was "corrected" - He's not a Cocker Sp x Poodle, I was told, he's a cockerpoo. I tried explaining that that breed wasn't recognised in the system (wasn't gunna even bother having any other argument...) - I was asked to hand write a vaccination certificate on clinic letter head (this was back, not long after we had computerised and did still hand write the occasional certificate. It was also back in the day when a "cockerpoo" was a relatively new thing). It was also around that time that we had the onslaught of "he's got all the good traits of a poodle and a cocker spaniel" or my all time personal favourite - "He's worth so much because he comes from a purebred poodle AND a Purebred Cocker spaniel so you see - he's a combination of the both - I think they call it "hybrid vigour" and thats what makes cockerpoos so much more valuable than just a poodle" The other thing is - pet shops often contract a vet to do all their work - and I will add it's a terrifying agreement which only serves to protect the pet shop. I wouldn't accept a "vet checked" animal from a pet shop if my life depended on it. Basically - I would put money on an over bearing owner who swears bling that their pet was a Maltalier OR a vet-for-hire who was instructed to sign off as such. edited to add: Upon re-reading - sounds like its a vet-for-hire from the puppy mill who listed him as a Maltalier. He's all these things AND bitsa? Isn't that a bit like saying I'm tubby, round, fat AND obese? I wish we could call it like it is - he's a bitsa or a mongrel or a mutt - but regardless he should be a well loved pet. urgh. Friggin pet shops and stupid people!
  12. Where do you find the yoghurt? Never heard of it.
  13. Guinea Pig - about 12ish here. She lived to almost 15.
  14. Sumo is lovely but I think I have a little "pup crush" on Moose.
  15. I recently read a book which suggest you can over do yoghurt. sorry - over do calcium. I think it said no more than 9oo mg per day or about 1/4 teaspoon of egg shells. Will have to pull it up and find the answer - will need a few days. as for how much to give - I give Scottie (10 kilo foxie) between 1 teaspoon and 2 tablespoons of Jalna natural depending on what he's eating. He goes through about 180 grams a week and LOVES it. He will actually pick it out of things and leave the rest sometimes.
  16. It's a great idea - I follow a blog who does one photo a week :)
