  1. Yeah its really yappy and submissive/timid... I’m assuming by monkey you mean a bit cheeky & full of fun personality?
  2. Thanks RP I should get some styptic powder for the first aid kit. I’ve been trying to keep it clean (he has too... keeps licking it!) and I’ve been using a spray which has an antibacterial in, sort of like betadine/Dettol for dogs. I’ve left it unwrapped now, last night I just did a loose bandage to make sure nothing got in/blood didn’t go everywhere. I still can’t get a good look, I doubt a vet would be able to either without sedating him. Such a wiggle worm, he tries to pull his paw out of your hand and fidget. He might’ve just stepped on a pine cone or stick and stabbed right up under the base of his claw, or got it stuck in something...
  3. Just need a bit of advice... last night I let dogs out for wees before bed, Monty came in and went to bed all fine. I saw some blood on the floor and then saw some on his bed (just a tiny bit) and I turned the light on and his paw was all bloody. He wouldn’t let me clean it up or anything so I sprayed a bunch of wound guard on it, wrapped with gauze then with vetwrap to stick it on... Didnt get a chance to get into vet today, plus he’s learning not to be dog reactive so vet visits are a bit of an adventure. I looked at it today and I think he split the claw close to the paw, not sure if I should take him in or not. Otherwise anyone have any good bandaging tips? Or is it fine uncovered? Cheers, S&M
  4. Following on from Kajrin; My sister also has anxiety and has been told to take magnesium. (Also she was told to eliminate caffeine, and minimise refined flours/sugars in her diet for a while to see if it helped.) Maybe that can help you & in turn help your girl.
  5. Thankfully we have strict bio security laws. It’s a bit hard since I love Vietnam, Thailand and China etc so so much, they’re such amazing cultures with some really sensational cuisines. These days most people do not eat dog/cat meat, and it’s only limited to certain pockets of society. But despite the fact that I respect and admire their cultures all so much, it’s difficult to comprehend that anyone would continue to eat it and produce it. In some really bad circumstances in a third world country I wouldn’t blame someone eating a stray dog if they had no other alternatives and were starving, but paying loads of money to eat a torured soul for the “aphrodisiac” effects....
  6. Oh wow that’s terrible! I would’ve thought it was illegal...! So technically people could import it? Recently I went to Vietnam, where the dog meat trade does exist. (Mostly in the north I believe) And it really did make me question my morals... why do I eat other meat yet find the concept of dog so disgusting? a) Culturally I’ve been raised to view it differently. b) dogs are carnivores which we don’t typically eat But then I remembered it’s also the brutal torture and terrible living conditions they experience before a usually agonising death.
  7. Poor Tempeh Might need to look into getting something similar for my Monty, or doggy door access to house/garage. Yesterday there was a big storm but I didn’t know it was coming so I left them out during the day. Checked the weather at around 11 and it was 100% chance of storm at 2pm. There was massive thunder and a little hail... at lunch I got a call saying Monty had escaped! (He hasn’t escaped in almost a year since we got the new fence!) A kind lady saw him, and we have a spare key so she let him inside the house for us thankfully. Last week there was a big thunderstorm at night and even though he’s not allowed on the bed he ended up sleeping with me all night, he was terrified poor matey.
  8. I’d love to meet a “proper” tibbie. My only experience with one is our neighbours girl who was from a pet shop (as with any breed, DONT get a pet shop pup!) and the poor girl is a bit inbred I think... she’s super timid and has crooked bulgy eyes and is a bit like a canine rag-doll. I’m sure that is super off character to what they’re supposed to be like
  9. Yes. Extremely sad. It did say she had a broken back fence though, that’s what I was referring to.
  10. Yeah the least you could do to be a responsible owner, if she was so adamant she could safely keep this dog, is to get VERY STRONG fencing that the dog couldn’t climb!
  11. Personally I would ban dogs from the lounge all the time just to eliminate that scenario, I don’t know if it’s worth the risk. Especially because toddler face level is within reach if Claudia is on the lounge. Sorry that’s the only advice I can give you but I wish you the very best whatever the decision comes to.
  12. The dog or your daughter? If pup becomes aggressive/snappy when sitting on your lap to your toddler, then perhaps try to ban dogs from the couch for the safety of your little one. A few times Scrappi has been snappy at Monty (just minorly as a bossy big brother thing) when Scrappi is sitting with us on the lounge and Monty wants to get on too.
  13. That’s disgusting!! What a sick, heartless woman! She should be banned from owning animals! (Just a warning to anyone who clicks the link, the first thing that pops up is a photo of the frozen puppies )
  14. On the topic of unethical breeders/greeders.... saw an ad on gumtree recently, a registered frenchie breeder. They were selling a blue bitch for $12,000 (!!!) on mains, and $10,000 for a family pet on a desexing contract!!! Then proceeded to list all the “pretty and rare colours you can breed from her”...
  15. Very very true. One of my dogs Monty is very selective when it comes to which dogs he is friendly with. He adores Scrappi and treats him like a security blanket, he is almost attached at the hip. He loves the Labrador next door, and coincidentally another lab around the block. And he gets on well with another dog reactive dog who gets walked by our back lane go figure. But aside from them, I do not trust him near other dogs. Sometimes he is just silly and rudely excited which p*sses the other dog off. Or he is reactive and shows fear and occasionally aggression. On the weekend I walked him, he was really well behaved, walked loose leash perfectly and was super obedient. I was really proud. Then the rest of the walk was awful. We got cornered between yappy dogs in a yard (which mont was nervous of) and an offleash cattle dog about 60m away coming towards us... then another dog offleash while the owner mowed the yard (he walked out of the front yard but Monty was really good and passed without issues) and then a Mum with a young girl walking their dog on a retractable. Monty was not happy this dog was coming towards us (neither was I...!) and I tried to make the “No dogs” leash really obvious to the Mum and calmly get Monty away. After that he was a ball of nerves and proceeded to pull and swerve and cry/staffy-scream/whine It’s a bit of taking two steps forward, one step back. Hopefully one day he can be much more comfortable and at ease on walks, but some days it just gets all too much for him. We bought the “No Dogs” lead after multiple occasions like that where offleash or even leashed dogs would get way too close. Luckily no fights/issues have arisen but I don’t want there to be a first. (Once a tradie’s Great Dane pup rushed us, didn’t even see it coming until it was really close, and I must’ve visibly been worried, and the bloke goes “oh he’s friendly!” And I go “Mines not!!” (He was the worried one then!) Luckily he managed to call it away after I ran up to a neighbors verandah, and Monty didn’t growl or anything thankfully but I think that really shook him. )
  16. Saddening to see. While there are plenty of rescue dogs already needing homes, and “accidental litters” left right and centre, and while there are so many people trying desperately to shut down puppy farming, that they would open a mass produced puppy factory. No matter how clean & good the facilities are, as others have mentioned that is no way to raise a well adjusted family member. They will be selling pups for $1000s profit. Would be great if registered breeders were limited to the caring, ethical, small scale hobby breeders who love dogs, are experts, and have the ability to well socialise and care for their animals. And it is such a shame that the general public are so mislead due to the many forms of “registration”. A “registered breeder” could refer simply to council registry, or State registry (like Dogs NSW) etc, or something like MDBA (or whatever it’s called)
  17. Dog breeding facility proposed near koala feed trees south of Bathurst AN animal breeding facility planned for Fosters Valley could be built alongside a known koala feeding habitat if plans now before Bathurst Regional Council are approved. Rockley Valley Park Pty Ltd plans to build an $841,000 breeding facility to supply dogs to a Kellyville pet store. A statement of environmental effects [SoEE] lodged as part of the development application says it would include 15 kennels; a building containing 20 whelping (birthing) kennels; eight mating kennels; a grooming shed; and a number of dogs runs, outdoor fenced areas and dog socialisation areas. The breeding facility would take up about two hectares of a 100 hectare site at the corner of Rockley Road and Black Mountain Road, about 21 kilometres south of Bathurst. “The proposed facility seeks to raise well socialised puppies that have experienced love and care at the site and have been properly trained prior to the dogs being sold at the Kellyville Pets facility,” the SoEE states. A key concern for the SoEE was the proposed site’s proximity to koala “feed trees” along the western boundary of the 100 hectare site. However, the SoEE states the distance between the breeding facility and koala habitat meant no koalas were likely to be harmed by the dogs. “Due to the fact that there are no trees in the vicinity of the dog breeding facility, there is no potential habitat for koalas,” it states. “The only potential interaction between koalas and the land at the south-western part of the site where the proposed dog breeding facility is to be located would be if a koala was walking on the ground which can occur mostly by male koalas seeking new territories or in search of a female.” The SoEE recommends “non-koala feed trees” be planted around the site and two perimeter fences will be built around the facility. “The area of the proposed dog breeding facility does not contain any core koala habitat and no koalas have been identified on the site,” it states. “However, koala sightings have been made in the vicinity of the subject site. “The two perimeter fences will provide a physical barrier to the koalas from the dog kennels and the dense conifer hedge proposed along both Black Mountain Road frontage and Rockley Road frontage will also deter koalas.” Special protocols will be put in place to be followed if a koala is seen in the area after the facility is built.
  18. We also currently reuse grocery shop plastic bags for "poo-patrol" (in the yard), but I use dog poo bags for walks. (A family member put some in the dogs Xmas stockings haha and they've lasted ages!) Once they have used up I also want to buy biodegradable ones. (Which is confusing because half of them aren't actually biodegradable under realistic conditions) We can't not use bags for "poo patrol" either because of the risk of maggots in the wheelie bins...
  19. Eek! You'll have to keep an eye out, probably will be a few more coming out and about now that it's warming up!
  20. As mentioned above, not quite 60km a day. I have a staffy x who could keep up with lots of exercise and would be happy to spend the day doing agility, going for big walks, fetch etc. but he is just as happy to laze in the sun all day with just a few quick games of zoomies with his fur-brother. Of course it depends on the individual dog, but maybe a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, an American Staffordshire Terrier or a staffy mix would be suitable.
