  1. This stinks. 1 dead dog, 1 questionable staffy x now in a BSL state, 1 traumatised carer. Awesome. And the cherry on top is a private rescue-but-not-rescue responsible for this mess comes out squeaky clean and getting more of a foothold "building a relationship" with council. Why? What for?
  2. oh dear fediie. Not a rescue again. Things are coming unravelled I swear. Bkossom78, if you were in NSW you'd be wrong on both the getting of private details from the C.A.R. and taking the animal home. I'm really glad it's worked out happily for everyone so far, you must have different regs in the ACT.
  3. can everyone see this direct link from FB? attached
  4. :rainbowbridge: Rest in peace sweetheart. All my love Baifra. xxx
  5. I'm so sorry baifra your heart must be broken. xxxx
  6. I'm on a city block with a very little grass bit and lots of concrete, was recently given one of those hoselinks hose heads super jet. It's great! Did a test run on my concrete: yard broom and kennel clean vs just the hose (water, no chemicals) and it beats it by miles. I can see squiqqles where it's blasted the dirt off my concrete! :) So it's perfect for pee stains, you'd never know it was there.
  7. OP. I think it's great that you're helping. There's definitely questions that people should ask. I do think though, that you could word it to put a bit of onus back on the seeker though. There's no use providing a list that they can copy and paste into an email without actually thinking about why they need to ask or if it is appropriate to the breed. Encourage breed research, clue them in on the magical teacups, extra money for blue coats, no-shedding promises (because no-shed doesn't mean no-groom lol). Have them ask themselves questions as well like do I have 15yrs to devote to this puppy...or the time to train them now...will this breed's needs be too much for me.....can I afford vet bills....are all the residents of home including 4legged ready for this pup... I guess I'm saying arm them with more than a list to send. :)
  8. As far as I know, what they voted on is here LINK. It did not propose desexing on reclaimed animals if that's what you mean by any animal, only those sold by the facility at the end of impound time. :)
  9. That third eyelid should go back into place once the inflammation is under control. I've never heard of them staying visible long after things have resolved. ....I was thinking, is there a chance that he's rubbed his face too hard after surgery and scratched the cornea? Vets have a flouro dye that shows up abrasions of the eye, did they try that just to rule it out? He will be fine given time, vet care and TLC :) you're just a worried dog-mum and I don't blame you. It's hard to see them sad.
  10. omg that just looks painful seriously why are we seeing tiny dogs that are so starved? They take nothing to feed.
  11. Exactly the same as me. I saw someone walking along Blaxland Road, Ryde at 8am one morning last week with a pitbull running along ahead of them. My thoughts were wondering what would happen if someone with another dog, let alone a small dog, came along the same path. If I saw that I would crap myself as I would be expecting the worst. With so many attacks I don't like to see any other dog coming towards me with no collar or other means of control. I'm not so worried about small dogs - it occasionally happens but generally it is larger dogs and my dogs have been attacked without provocation. Yes. I apparently own "yappy" "snappy" "anklebiters" but can't take them to Sydney Park for a nice walk because they get rushed or trampled by larger dogs who are exactly what people generalise my guys to be. Note, no predominant breed is mentioned for fear of being labelled a BSL supporter or breed hater which I am not. I just can't handle anymore close calls. People should be allowed to say they feel uncomfortable, that doesn't mean they are ignorant or media brainwashed. But this has been a very interesting thread and the rotty pics are lovely. :)
  12. Oh dear that's one hell of a brain snap. Would they investigate with a necropsy or just file it under 'Of course, it's a pit bull'? Interesting (or maybe just sadder) that there was onlookers but the dog singled out the owner. Not the kind of story the dogs of that state need right now.
  13. Definitely doesn't sound right. :-( Could they have missed a tooth abscess? Far enough back and right up in the root you can get goopy eye, swelling etc. I swear there's some kind of protocol for xrays that mean you might not be able to stay with him? There's a few vets on Dol so they will know. But in any case, just a light sedation would keep him still for a few minutes and be quite safe.
  14. I'm always anon. And an occasional 3am insomnia random thread reader which I find a bit embarrassing. Then there's the walking off mid-read and having your name sitting at the bottom of the thread for aaaages like you're studying it for exams.
  15. Wizard I was asking stuff not long ago. The worry is that you can find a dog, take the dog to a vet for scanning and that vet is apparently under no obligation to seize the dog. (I thought they were but apparently that's not the case) Clinics can apply to be an 'approved premises' under the Act so they can legally seize and hold strays until the ranger comes but many aren't. So pets are being sent home with people who find them and believe that taking them to the pound means they will certainly die. I'm so sorry about Sarge. Hope he comes home soon. edit: spelling
  16. I have an obvious favourite or two :p first one to guess wins a goldfish , and the rest are all pretty much equally lovely even if I would never own one. Definitely not adding a least favourite breed. Firstly, haven't met them all and secondly it's more likely to be actual individuals I don't gel with rather than a whole breed!
  17. Have you ever actually met a diagnosed hoarder? Or seen how the animals are kept? That term makes me prickle and often pops up in anti-private-rescue propaganda. Hoarding is an illness. And you have to be qualified to diagnose it, not just an armchair critic. A true collector isn't just keeping a couple of fosters and I think many carers would be mortified to think foster failure could even be considered a red flag for mental illness. Yes, I absolutely agree that rescues do need to keep an eyes on all policies and procedures. And yep I'm all too aware of how people react when you suggest they are letting the side down. People do not need to meet a diagnosed anything to understand the issues. However, yes I have witnessed this first hand, not that it matters. I object to anyone saying all rescue is good and that they cannot do better. That level of arrogance is mind boggling. Foster carers need support which includes an understanding of why they are fostering because some foster to meet their own needs not the dogs. Anyway seems to me some rescue is a closed shop with people protecting their own interests by personally attacking others to make their point. Which is very poor form and gives the impression there is something to hide. But it does matter. I guess unless you're trying to prove a point. Then diagnosis and pathology just get in the way. And find me ethical rescuers who believe they cannot improve on what they are doing. Please. Obviously there is a story behind your posts. Dog_fan, time for some of that 'truth' you mentioned. What exactly happened to you? Not that you have to share, but you definitely have a lot of very strong opinions for someone anonymous who doesn't participate in the rescue section except in threads like this one so you can have a little dig at rescue.

  19. Sigh, please go back and read post #33, slowly, carefully, and take it all in ... then please, do tell me where I was at all attacking, harsh, rude, derogatory or, much less, saying breeders are contemptable and pedigree dogs are bad? Then read subsequent posts in reply and tell me who's been condescending, rude and elitist. The guy that flew off the handle against Reg'd Breeders/Pedigrees ... his post got me thinking about something that had never occurred to me before now, because this is the first time in my life I've not shelled out $1k's for a pedigree dog group as such, and it's been a fantastic, emotionally & financially rewarding experience. In no way did I dump on anyone, status of dogs or the people who bred them; I simply made an observation that the only issues I've ever had, and the many, many $1k's lost has been as a result of pedigree dogs - it's not rocket science, it's just plain simple fact - I'm not knocking the dogs or the breeders, just stating the truth. The pedigree dogs with issues (2 Rotties & Akita etc) were amongst the first few bred and sold in the country. double sigh I'm out before I get a warning.
  20. Look, when I write in plain, simple English expressing my personal experiences and opinion, only to be attacked for same, wrongly accused of holding breeders in contempt and not liking pedigree dogs (oh sure, I can't stand them, that's why I've had so many so many successes over the years I suppose), it is inferred I must've caused HD in my 2 top Rotties and someone sees fit to take the piss because I referred to the breed of a dog correctly, then you can bet your sweet patootie I'm going to get somewhat peeved and start to treat peeps exactly in the demeaning manner they've treated me. Oh and their elitist attitude of "you've got a BYB mongrel, so why are you here???". I HAVE PUREBRED DOGS, I JUST DIDN'T PAY ANY OF YOU <>$1.5k ea FOR THEM AND THEY DON'T HAVE PAPERS BUT THEIR PUREso therefore I'm some sort of philistine renegade who's supporting "real breeders" competitors whom they'd like to see stamped out, banished, done away with, outlawed, hung, drawn & quartered for their plethora of sins. Find a show program from 25 years ago when I was showing mine & see what Akita Inu's were referred to way back then. Akita Inu is the correct name. I don't give a fat rat's crack what the Aussies of today call them, I refer to them correctly and don't take kindly to being ridiculed for doing so, especially by pedigree breeders. So, let's start calling Blue Heelers just Blues shall we, any type of Mastiff prefix can be dropped so it's just Mastiff from now on, and whilst we're at it all Retrievers can be just that, no more differentiation between them requ'd. It's the Aussie way afterall Petal, you're doing your fair share of 'attacking'. This is just a little discussion forum not an unmoderated facebook page where anything goes. You set the tone and unsurprisingly got the responses you set yourself up for. And yes, you are absolutely entitled to an opinion, that's your right but personally I don't think that needs to be at the expense of others with your harsh & derogatory language.
  21. In Australia, they are just called Akita. No Inu. You have to be one of the most rude and condescending posters I have seen in a long time. Maybe it's just your style, but it's rude.
  22. I can't believe you made her disturb the critters and get out of bed! How mean! hehe It's a very cute piccy and ten points for trying.
