  1. Did they attempt to resuscitate him? And sorry, it's not like it was uber complex surgery. It was a cut, it should have been quick and not so engrossing that a vet couldn't tell his patient has died. Plus it's pretty galling to then ask for $550 on top of that to tell you what happened. Get all your facts lined up and go to the relevant board in your state. Mistakes happen but this shouldn't have.
  2. The chip is supposed to lodge in place held by the animal's natural connective tissue that forms naturally and gradually after being implanted. I guess in theory or very rare cases they could dislodge from the tissue, be targeted by the immune system as a foreign body and rejected out through the skin. If that's the case, no amount of treating the outer inflammation will stop the body pushing it out. Just a thought anyway. Foreign body rejection happens with piercings in people too, years after healing.
  3. If you put the coat on and they get out of bed, flop their tummies on the floor like they are too hot, you've overdone it. :) That's how I normally get the hint anyway.
  4. Code of Practice Definitions: From what I can see: one word could be all it takes. No specified difference between large and small scale. Registered business or casual hobby. Breeding is referred to as a business, businesses have to comply with codes. And Codes can change
  5. That's exactly what worries me. It's not feasible or reasonable for quiet little hobbyists who make a negligible impact on the national dog population numbers anyway. If this comes in and doesn't cause a spike in pretty crossbreeds being bred/sold/impounded or shipped over the borders for chipping in other registries then I'll be very very surprised. And from a rescue point of view we're next because we have no self regulation whatsoever.
  6. Eeewww yes. It freaked me out to see the rejected sardine heads staring at me from random places  so the littlies get a few whitebait when it's in season and they eat the whole fish incl the icky head.
  7. Corvus, I'm not involved enough but have already seen one panicky email and have no information about the correspondence between the two sides. DogNSW interpretation of key points re breeders here I assume the costs are estimates given the DA aspects, gaining a breeder permit and plans to scrap lifetime registration and replacing it with indexed yearly rates with lower costs for desexed animals. There are some good points in the taskforce findings, but it's disappointing to think that backyarders and large scale breeding facilities will feel less impact than small hobbyist registered breeders.
  8. I urge everyone to read the entire taskforce submission (here) . This won't stop with breeders, it affects ALL pet owners. Tell me there isn't enough laws already, that aren't being enforced. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/poctaa1979360/ Companion Animals Act http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/caa1998174/ Code of Practice for Breeding and Rearing Establishments http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/299803/Breeding-dogs-and-cats-code-of-practice.pdf Companion Animals Regulation http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/maintop/view/inforce/subordleg+374+2008+cd+0+N The failed NSW Bill proposing banning of mammals in pet stores and other retail methods (which is basically the only thing missing from all the existing laws) was vehemently opposed by industry lobbyists and officially disputed by the Australian Veterinary Association. http://www.ccac.net.au/nsw-bill-ban-sale-mammals-pet-shops
  9. Rest in peace little Gracie. Andrea you gave her a name and a chance. She was a very very lucky girl. I'm so sorry you lost her.
  10. 10+ is a common age. Expense, lifestyle change, new dog, new child out with the old. But some are genuine and extremely sad stories of people who love their dog.
  11. that is a seriously disturbing post #1. And could have been so much worse.
  12. Weren't there afghan x pharaoh in rescue a couple of years ago?
  13. If anyone should take the little dog on, as long as it's a kind and loving home there is every chance the dog would adapt. I've rescued/adopted dogs as old as 15, they've had a terrible life but I can assure you that they've all responded to love and kindness and thrived on it1 Oh yes they adapt alright! Doesn't take long for a smart old critter to work out when they're on to a good thing. The one huge fail with private rehoming is people don't always have the experience or the care factor to ensure a good outcome for the dog. I had a pup here, he was on his 3rd home by 8 wks old. All via FB buy/swap/sell. I had one 7yr old from a woman who regularly finds excuses to give her dogs away and get new ones. Not once has she kept a dog till it's last breath. 12 months after getting rid of 3 she had fresh ones.
  14. Thanks for pointing this out Sheridan. It's a large forum now and things do get lost. I'll check more regularly in case my aged and palliative experience is of some help*. Being alone with just google and sooo many questions will do your head in. Pity there aren't more of the older rescuers posting anymore. Having a rescue's access to medical and colleague backup is vastly different to going it alone. I wouldn't and couldn't do one more dog otherwise. * no substitute for veterinary care
  15. I'm so sorry Andrea Hang in there little Gracie. Puppy hugs to you. xx
  16. Oh I love the converted fireplace(?) thingy. Ours are covered up due to space but one of them has a dog bed right in front of it and could be turned into a gorgeous cubby (without the crate door which kind of ruins the look for me  )
  17. I was looking for photos......... news video Images appear to be after the first visit. Actually looks better than I expected considering the controversy, for a place that would have no budget to speak of Just a very rural setup, there's concrete runs and dirt floor pens (not that it looks like you'd ever get lush green grass anyway). Nobody has pointed out who the lifetime residents are so it's impossible to tell who is just passing through before adoption.
  18. Ferrety eyes and nose, god knows what they've done to it the poor thing. I think 'Brazilian Rat' is more colloquial. And this story sounds almost identical to the Mexican Rat story. Must have been a slow news day in Argentina or a planted story to put people off buying from the animal peddlers in illegal markets.
  19. Will PM you anne when I'm on a proper computer. Xx eta: Your PM's are switched off. Hope you're OK. [email protected] when you're ready.
  20. I thought concrete with proper drainage running away from the runs was the standard way to control disease in shelters and capture the runoff from cleaning. Yes/no?
  21. Is it true they are back at BP and without the temp tests? Sorry, all of this happens on FB and I have it blocked.
  22. 3 of the 4 found are, or will be, fine. One is still fighting hard. 2 little girls still missing. Thanks for the update Rebanne. Best wishes for the two lost and the little battler in hospital. The poor owners must be in shock.
