Tracheal / Throat Collapse - Vet Recommendations
_PL_ replied to FURRYFRIENDS's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Don't panic :) it could be airway disease which is not uncommon in tiny dogs. You can ask for an xray with your regular if you want to make sure, then decide on specialist advice.. One of mine has a kink in his tiny little airway which is not great but not a collapse and hopefully won't be. He is on meds for the cough, you just treat the symptoms as a kind of preventative to things worsening. For example, coughing brings on more coughing. Which brings on more inflammation which brings on worse symptoms etc etc So a trip to the vet is not necessarily going to lead to a critical intervention. Best wishes for you xAnna -
I've found a fresh dry patch of wood shavings (the type people get for their guinea pigs) is tempting to pee on. As long as it's not rained on.

Yep. I totally agree that if he had dealt with it himself one on one, been up front, professional and paid all costs then I think it would be half the mess by now. He even tried to lie about the reporter leaving the gate open when the interview didn't go his way. And now it's another lie; There's absolutely no way a dog of Wag's size or even close can snap a spine like that. And fracture the ribs so badly he would have been unable to breathe for the moments he was still aware. That is a brutal, powerful attack and none of his pointing the finger at a dog they didn't see will ever convince me otherwise. Ignore the 'staffy' word, it's just too easy, a perfect scapegoat for completely inept supervision. How can he sleep at night.

Was there one single photo of Wags mixing with small dogs?

Sad a lot of people don't expect their dog to react in a 'dog' kind of way to newborns. You only have to watch some of the utube videos with people laughing and giggling about how cute a dog & baby interaction is when it's clear the dog is NOT happy. And the tot is in a very risky situation. Newborns with their strange new smell and high little squeal could provoke any kind of unexpected reaction. It's so risky, but they may have seen their dog be completely bomb proof around other marginally older children. I'm so sorry for the innocent baby. Hopefully too young to remember. xxx

I assumed it meant not just the dogs in your care or your group's care but outside that circle. eg I used to do a lot of pound dog listings and it was a lot of work but I had the easy part, volunteers doing constant temp testing were often exhausted by system and never ending flow of strays. It can become your constant shadow. 24/7. Up into the a.m's every night then starting again in the morning, they become dogs you feel responsible for. All of them. When there's a PTS it's heartbreaking.

I'm so sorry about the HD. There will be some good advice here from people with experience. You may want to say (either here or by message) your approximate area in regards to finding the tried and true specialists. ooops sorry, I see Redlands QLD on your profile.

Same. The club does a great job of getting them out there for people to meet.

Were you thinking of a plodder for a quiet ramble or a zippy dog that can keep up with a strong hike? Not a suggestion for you because I've only met the breed at dog days but what do people think of a Leonberger?
-
Have you tried a dog puzzle bowl to prevent gobbling of food? :)
-
Have you tried the mature dog breeder listings here on Dogzonline? Chihuahua breeders mature pets I see a short haired female there :) or https://www.petrescue.com.au/ Some decent breeders advertise of Gumtree but it's a matter of research. You could always try going to a dog show, get to know the breeders. Can't answer the colour question! :) edit; you may end up paying transport as well but it's not hugely expensive, you're paying by weight.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. You'd love collecting a stinky matted pound dog and the poor little thing is so scared the anal glands go all over you. Or sometimes they save it for the crate (drive with the windows down LOL) ..... OR the best one .... inevitable grooming time in which case it's always when you are at the business end. For some reason I'm still shocked when it happens.

Is this question asking what percentage of dogs should be assessed for suitability for rehoming? Or which percentage of assessed dogs should be rehomed? Or even which percentage of assessed dogs would we like to see being assessed as rehomable? I assumed the first question was what was meant. Someone else might assume the second or even third and answer with that interpretation in mind. When you ask questions that suggest a lack of insight into how rehoming works, you're going to end up with unusable answers. But by all means, continue to assume us simple plebs don't understand how research works :) Erhmagerd save them all. Forget about the fact that they are a dog and not all of them should be rehomed. I did the survey but it's fairly restricted, the %questions about how many should race etc. Doesn't really take into account the wastage. So if I say eg __% of racing greyhounds bred should be raced, there's no room for me to say; if it was a carefully managed breeding and management program instead of wholesale breeding until you find 'the one' that can compete then throw out the rest then my answer would be very different. Anyway I guess you can't have too many options for answers if you just want a simple snapshot of where people's heads are at when they heard the words Greyhound Racing. I hope the study yields something and maybe paves the way for a more in depth one.

Food definitely makes a smell difference. And the weight it brings is sort of a squishy soft all-over fat (if that makes sense). Yeasty skin is a bit of a pest. It stinks and usually malaseb is recommended but it's got some toxic ingredients that I don't think you need to be touching. Pine Tar based shampoos are less nasty and pretty effective. :)

Mr Powerlegs was showing me that last night

I think you need his spine checked and a new vet asap. If his spinal cord is compromised for example a herniated disc, you'll get both the incontinence and hind issues.

Seriously?!! So arrogant. If he had all the knowledge he claims to have, he wouldn't be trying to sell the idea that running 15 together is anything other than dangerous and stupid. If he has the solution to 100% avoiding large pack fights and dog attacks (and how to break them up safely) I'd be staggered because AFAIK nobody has worked that out.

People do get sold terrible lies I feel sorry for the owners who thought they were doing something good for their little dog. and Does anyone remember what he was like before he got spellcheckers and media people? I'll never forget this thread  And the plagiarised article this 'expert' wrote. Why people give him the time of day is testament to how well good PR team can do their magic. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/228373-dogs-not-to-buy/page__p__5548358__hl__%2Bfarmer+%2Bdave__fromsearch__1#entry5548358 edit; the page itself was taken down but it's still cached forever ;-) cached version (same thing as Dol post quote)

Opinions On Some Breeds * PUPPY UPDATE PG 4*

I may also be one of those awful people who doesn't really like labs... Every one I've met has been lovely but I just don't get them! God me too! I don't know what it is about them but I don't get the hype I find the goldens way more attractive if I was looking into that sort of dog. Why turn this thread into a Lab hating thread I don't get people that don't get Labs and I probably don't get some of the breeds these people like either, but I don't feel the need to hate on their breeds just because I don't get them/like them. It gives me the sh*ts when these type of threads turn into a particular breed hating/disparaging exercise. The OP specified up front "I don't need lab-style exuberance" and it should have been left there. :D :D Don't worry too much. Labs are still one of the most popular breeds ever!!! My breed can get called yappy and bitey and a pest at dog parks. And every second person remembers their granny's silky narking at them when they were kids. LOLOL. People aren't backwards in saying "Eeewwwww a Silky" right to my face. But I bet your labs are welcome everywhere. Just nod and smile. It doesn't really matter. All of this! Bless 'em.
