Is this question asking what percentage of dogs should be assessed for suitability for rehoming? Or which percentage of assessed dogs should be rehomed? Or even which percentage of assessed dogs would we like to see being assessed as rehomable? I assumed the first question was what was meant. Someone else might assume the second or even third and answer with that interpretation in mind. When you ask questions that suggest a lack of insight into how rehoming works, you're going to end up with unusable answers. But by all means, continue to assume us simple plebs don't understand how research works :) Erhmagerd save them all. Forget about the fact that they are a dog and not all of them should be rehomed. I did the survey but it's fairly restricted, the %questions about how many should race etc. Doesn't really take into account the wastage. So if I say eg __% of racing greyhounds bred should be raced, there's no room for me to say; if it was a carefully managed breeding and management program instead of wholesale breeding until you find 'the one' that can compete then throw out the rest then my answer would be very different. Anyway I guess you can't have too many options for answers if you just want a simple snapshot of where people's heads are at when they heard the words Greyhound Racing. I hope the study yields something and maybe paves the way for a more in depth one.

Food definitely makes a smell difference. And the weight it brings is sort of a squishy soft all-over fat (if that makes sense). Yeasty skin is a bit of a pest. It stinks and usually malaseb is recommended but it's got some toxic ingredients that I don't think you need to be touching. Pine Tar based shampoos are less nasty and pretty effective. :)

Mr Powerlegs was showing me that last night

I think you need his spine checked and a new vet asap. If his spinal cord is compromised for example a herniated disc, you'll get both the incontinence and hind issues.

Seriously?!! So arrogant. If he had all the knowledge he claims to have, he wouldn't be trying to sell the idea that running 15 together is anything other than dangerous and stupid. If he has the solution to 100% avoiding large pack fights and dog attacks (and how to break them up safely) I'd be staggered because AFAIK nobody has worked that out.

People do get sold terrible lies I feel sorry for the owners who thought they were doing something good for their little dog. and Does anyone remember what he was like before he got spellcheckers and media people? I'll never forget this thread  And the plagiarised article this 'expert' wrote. Why people give him the time of day is testament to how well good PR team can do their magic. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/228373-dogs-not-to-buy/page__p__5548358__hl__%2Bfarmer+%2Bdave__fromsearch__1#entry5548358 edit; the page itself was taken down but it's still cached forever ;-) cached version (same thing as Dol post quote)

Opinions On Some Breeds * PUPPY UPDATE PG 4*
_PL_ replied to dididog's topic in General Dog Discussion
I may also be one of those awful people who doesn't really like labs... Every one I've met has been lovely but I just don't get them! God me too! I don't know what it is about them but I don't get the hype I find the goldens way more attractive if I was looking into that sort of dog. Why turn this thread into a Lab hating thread I don't get people that don't get Labs and I probably don't get some of the breeds these people like either, but I don't feel the need to hate on their breeds just because I don't get them/like them. It gives me the sh*ts when these type of threads turn into a particular breed hating/disparaging exercise. The OP specified up front "I don't need lab-style exuberance" and it should have been left there. :D :D Don't worry too much. Labs are still one of the most popular breeds ever!!! My breed can get called yappy and bitey and a pest at dog parks. And every second person remembers their granny's silky narking at them when they were kids. LOLOL. People aren't backwards in saying "Eeewwwww a Silky" right to my face. But I bet your labs are welcome everywhere. Just nod and smile. It doesn't really matter. All of this! Bless 'em. -
You can email them to me if you like and I'll put them up. :) Otherwise, upload to photobucket and it will generate links for you to post.

Cowra Rescuers..is This True Or A Beat-Up?
_PL_ replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
It would be great if this group can succeed where others have not. My biggest concern is that the attitude behind the pound's operation is anything but pro-rescue and pro-welfare. When even the RSPCA has "investigated" and found nothing to complain about in terms of welfare, there's a problem. I and others have been asking for true and genuine transparency in the pound's operations. I don't live in Cowra shire, so my voice is pretty muted based on that - yet Cowra is my closest town and where I spend most of my time and money. Since I moved here, I've seen atrocious "management" of particular cases and inadequate responses from people claiming to be "rescuers". I did confuse Kylie with someone else and for that I can only offer an apology. There are lots of pretenders in the rescue community (as with most sectors of the community I guess), and sometimes they blur into each other. I am not a pretender and the people who actually know me, know that. If comments on social media and forums stop good people from continuing to rescue, I don't see how that helps. I can only imagine how empty some people's lives must be if trying to damage or destroy others is something to do for fun. I'm not having a dig at anyone specific here. If that were the case I would do so privately - and then I'd probably be condemned for not doing so in public. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. I'm in rescue for the dogs. That's my agenda. That quote is just too classic to make comment. Get that shovel ready, you're digging yourself a nice deep hole. And you can shovel something else of yours while you're at it. -
New Rescue Services For Cowra Nsw And Surrounds
_PL_ replied to sas's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
A typical fall-back response, 'it's all about the dogs' when clearly you made it personal and all about your ego by going off your brain and getting it wrong. And pointing out how experienced and knowledgable you are when clearly you have no idea. Just by the way you write, you sound like the one of the crazies that pounds are trying to keep out. Back-peddle now, say you do all sorts of things behind the scenes (and have been for ten years LOL) as if other rescuers who have called you out don't care about the dogs and are just sitting around with their thumb up their butt waiting to take down good and helpful people. -
I'm so jealous. LOL And you are going to have SO much fun!

I'd vote for a debark any day when people have to get rid of their pets because the neighbours are making their life hell. The several I've had through, have been happy healthy little critters. And I'm not surprised the yappy little things were done. Desexing, is more painful and more 'un-natural' and has it's own complications if you want to make comparisons. But just like a debark, it has to be done when the circumstances mean the dog will live a quality life. Free of unwanted litters and baits thrown over the fence.

Cowra Rescuers..is This True Or A Beat-Up?
_PL_ replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Has she started a new profile...??? Why would you do that? . Possibly to hide herself from the reputation that she had on this forum. Especially as Dog Horse Girl profile is still active. Interesting she speaks of ethics - we all have long memories here and her actions around horses from the dogger sales sticks firmly in mind. Skulking back on including introducing herself like a newbie did not go unnoticed by many. Ah! OMG  Love the born-again Dolers. Madley, you're doing really well here :) Will send you an email, I'm not on FB. -
Cowra Rescuers..is This True Or A Beat-Up?
_PL_ replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Sure, all rescues working together is logical and beneficial. But of course, those rescues have to have the same values i.e. desexing, vet work, safe behaviour etc. Technically they are a breed specific rescue with an offshoot 'And friends' program that looks after all-breeds from the Cowra and surrounding areas. There is no divide here between all breeds and breed specific that can sometimes be seen in rescue. Thanks Sas :) -
I'm totally crap at bandaging. Love the Vetwrap to put over it though.
-
Ooh forgot about that one! Cetrigen. And spray outside, with gloves on, and let it dry properly. Unless you want stain everywhere! Or maybe that's just me being uncoordinated.

Sadly, I do! And will for a long time, so I suppose its a blessing in disguise. I also have Refresh Night Time gel (previous name escapes me) but its two small white tubes with a black lid, ingredients are liquid paraffin (42.5%) and soft white paraffin (57.3%) - would this be safe to use too? Any of the non medicated eye lubricant containing plain old wool fat or paraffin is completely safe. Ointment is very thick though so if you're doing a combination you need to leave a 15-20 min gap between chlorsig first then the lubricant after. It does blur the vision for quite a long time so if that's a problem go for the eye gel rather than eye ointment. What you're trying to do is hold back irritation and ulcer of the scratch. Give the nearest clinic a bell, tell them what you have in your kit and they'll give you the yes or no. :) When you get there they can do the dye test.

_PL_ replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Sas will they be working with breed specific rescues? -
Eye wash. A couple of saline things from the chemist. One of the dog-safe antihistamines for bee sting. I'll find the dose chart but I'm sure dolers will know it. And if you have anything like chlorsig (eye ointment for a scratch on the eye) which may have been subscribed to you before. Neocort (cortisone cream for itchy bites) they give the dog a little comfort and hopefully stop them chewing enough to damage the skin, while you get to the vet. Also comforts a skin allergy flare-up. Lectade sachet in case of a bit of the runs. As you say, no replacement for a vet but they definitely tide you over on the way there. :)

Help: Which Of These Plants Is Causing My Dogs Itchy Skin?
_PL_ replied to BobbyM's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep, #2 Moses in the Cradle. Mulch itself is a source of mould (as it breaks down) which causes skin allergies in sensitive dogs. Replacing with pebbles helps. -
No way unreasonable. It's on your property but it's still a business. Every business gets to set it's hours. If you didn't, you would have no life whatsoever and your kids would miss out too. I find with animals there is greater pressure to bend rules .... I can't quite describe what I mean maybe someone else will do better. Like; when pounds have to close up for the day and people crack a wobbler because "if you really cared" then you would let them in.

Cowra Rescuers..is This True Or A Beat-Up?
_PL_ replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Maddy and Wreckit I think you are both right. Plausible death, and a whole lot of conspiracy theories. Currently, it doesn't matter who is right because council will ban rescue from the premises. -
I swear there was an online ....was it Pets On The Park?
