Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter
_PL_ replied to HeelerLove's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I still worry that cutting them off will not help their current animals and like a few of the overly keen FB warriors, I'm far too removed from things to comment on the shelter itself or their options or the way they operate without looking like a dingleberry. -
Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter

I haven't looked but I suppose it would be, like a hundred other unregistered rescues who potter along and haven't put much thought into needing permits. But who is breaking the law if an unsolicited gift is left at the gate? SA is very confusing. -

Maybe they just paid the usual tax on the bequest? No laws are stopping someone freely giving something away. I can go down the road and leave stuff at the crazy cat lady's house if I want. As long as she doesn't ask for it she isn't breaking laws. A quick look at SA non-profit laws is confusing, there's charitable fundraising permits, but permit exempt "minor lotteries" don't seem to count? I think? Politics aside. It is a worry to me that they still have animals in their care needing food and but particularly vetwork, none of which they can get if funds are cut off and people are told not to give anything. That doesn't seem right or fair to me. Maybe in the end the place will be bulldozed, but right now it still has occupants. -
What the hell is wrong with people. I hope she hasn't suffered starvation for so long that it's damaged her. Mita, we've trialled a few supplements, there's a newish one called Young At Heart, it's a really good supplement for all ages and has no nasty taste. I've found protexin is still the best replacement for gut flora and is also available in soluble form. Unfortunately both are probiotic you can't use probiotics and antibiotics together. Her vet has probably recommended whatever will suit. It might just be that all she can have is lectade to drink and chicken soup meals. I do sear red meat in front of anyone who needs encouraging (so they can get all the cooking smells) but she might not be up to digesting it just yet. Poor girl. Small donation coming from me on behalf of SSR. xAnna

Not bad stuff for mild things. But I'd post in the training section and ask for professional advice on how to stop this before it escalates. Because it can and does.

Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter
_PL_ replied to HeelerLove's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
being a charity always was voluntary. It depended on how you want to run your org. Having permission to fundraise varies from state to state and is a different process to the ATO registration. If a state says you need it to ask for money then you go apply. Registering with the ACNC (Charities Commission) is what was voluntary, unless you want to apply for gift deductibility. The rest, I don't know but that bit isn't correct and the rebukes of what action is being taken against them needs to stop. They need lawyers ASAP. This is so sad to see. eta: oops Steve sorry to repeat your post. -
Appropriate Weight For Sighthounds
_PL_ replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
With those long stretchy legs and back do they get health issues if they get really chunky? I admit, it's a completely different look to what I'm used to so they all look skinny, it's rare that I meet anyone other that a pet greyhound and around here they aren't all that lean. Those Elektra rescue photos are appalling btw. -

They need decent lawyers and that man needs to shut up. -
It may be relevant (sorry if it's been brought up already) ...NSW Govt is looking at amalgamating councils into 'Super Councils'. So what your council says now, may be completely different later.

Cocker Spaniel Needs Help
_PL_ replied to keetamouse's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Dogs need to be weaned off Lovan gradually. Please let them know he was taking it. -
Which is what I was trying to point out several posts ago but apparently that includes addressing the possibility of martian dognappers.

Tryhard dogfight idiots who read the newspaper? eta OK, here's a story I don't really want to repeat Hand on heart, many years ago I personally met a man who had been reduced to buying guinea pigs to blood his dingoes with. He started off with cheap or free pups (in those days you could buy a large crossbreed pup for $75 - $95 retail if you were desperate). His name and face became known, he was watched and moved on to easier obtained and concealed FTHG kittens or rabbits. He couldn't explain why his dingoes needed live animals. Some crap about keeping them antsy and alert and it being the best thing for them. In truth he was just a disgusting pig and a sadist. So yes there are other reasons animals are stolen. Not all involve bull breeds or fighting but few are pleasant. People can be sick. If you can't absolutely rule out dog fighting except by anecdotal statements and a few stats then you have to look at it as one of many possible scenarios.
-
The idea that you have to blood a dog so it'll get the taste for prey has been around long before articles about bait dogs started. You can't blame the media solely for an old chestnut that's been passed by word of mouth for years. If it's been warped to suit the current times, picked up and regurgitated then that's something else. But it's been folklore for a lot longer.

I've just seen Chi's piccies in the breeder section. It's very unfair of you Gapvic to post them there where I can't comment. Want want  gorgeous little micro greyhound. I'm so glad she's doing well. :)

Alphadog Animalarmy Rescue Out Of Act?
_PL_ replied to Aphra's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I've only ever heard of them by seeing their symbol on the Renbury site. -
You can buy parvac (parvo only) and a kennel cough one (and some cat ones) but you aren't allowed to do other people's animals as far as I know and you don't get the certificate. Dogs should go the the vet anyway, a good vet does more than just pop a vaccine in and send you home till next year so if you'e going to spend the money, get a good vet and have a yearly checkup.

Here we go. Media beat up. Frankly, I find it hard to not get passionate about someone being bailed up by several large dogs. Hard to imagine a much more terrifying situation. What a shame the man wasn't mauled to death, then maybe it would be worth getting a bit heated and passionate about it, hey? Why don't you try it and see how you fare. Good point but not admissible in Court based on the evidence presented here. It could have been set up. Maybe he hurt his arm somewhere else, knew the dogs, and is stiching someone up to pay the costs. What an odd thing to say. Anyway, yeah..because DOL chat and a grainy video is clearly all they'll present in court ... and I'm sure a good solicitor will be able to prove that the guy owned the dogs himself, paid the witnesses not to interfere, and was just trying to get a few days sick leave from work. resisting the urge to say more because I've seen these posts before and they seem to be on a different plane of existence.

"Freedom of Information" isn't all that easy either. I worked on a matter that required information via Freedom of Information and I had to shell out something in the vicinity of $300.00 (if I remember correctly). It certainly wasn't "free". All well and good if I had a spare several $M dollars to dip into as the RSPCA has. Yes I believe that is the case. Lots of processing fees. Begins with a $25 application and goes up from there I suppose rspcavic FOI ETA: and I'm sure just because you ask, you don't necessarily receive.

Faaar out, I just watched the video. All I can say is those dogs weren't playing, they were becoming aroused, in a pack. That man was very lucky to have a barrier behind him and be strong enough to stay on his feet.

15yr Old Cattle Dog In Hawkesbury
_PL_ replied to HazyWal's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
RIP May Thank you Nic for visiting her. Giving comfort to a dear old dog so close to the end. -
I don't understand the breeder side but if I were looking for a puppy, it would make the process a little clearer. How would I know what to ask about health testing? How would find a dog whose parents and breeders work on e.g agility instead of just picking the breed I think would be suitable? Or even know if all the people I email to find a puppy aren't actually having litters that year? There's been so many "Help Me" threads here when someone gets a dog with issues that they had no idea needed to be taken into the equation when they first started looking. Not everyone advertises on DOL apparently, and there's nothing wrong with tidying up the listings that haven't been touched (I've found a few whose websites don't exist anymore for example) or offering a better, clearer way for people to find the dog they want and is suited to them.

Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter
_PL_ replied to HeelerLove's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Oh dear, this isn't going to end well. :( -
Juice if you read it they weren't my dogs. Someone deliberately let the dogs out. Sadly they were told they can't have a lock on their gate as it needed to be left available for services to get in and out such as meter readings. THey have now been told the correct info but they have just moved into this house and sadly lost a very much loved member of their family. Thanks for your imput. Hope it never happens to a furbaby in your family. OMG that's exactly what I had in a rented house in Canberra. I can't remember what it was in the yard, some concrete thing that workmen had to have unrestricted access to, so no padlock, whenever they felt like it and the more secure you made the gate the more annoyed they would get (like I had bricks under the gap so my little dog couldn't get under when she was in the yard and they would boot the bricks a couple of feet away for no reason) and end up just leaving the gate flapping open most times. I'm so sorry for your friends K. RIP little dog.

NSW: I believed a dog was technically stolen because it had been left with someone for 7 days and the owner didn't return (apparently), dog was being sold but it had no chip and owner didn't return calls or report it as stolen so nothing could be done except tell the seller off for not chipping. It was weird and I still wonder why nobody felt they could do anything about it without locating this mysterious owner.
