  1. meanwhile the puppy farms are being encouraged to apply for their 'RSPCA approved" sign on the gate and take up the massive slack and thanks to all the states bring in the register laws they are all "registered" breeders even if most of their stock are oodles and from the last I checked fetching 2,500 to 5,000 and there are more "wanted" adds than puppies advertised my vet hates puppy farms with a passion, but he has come to the conclusion they are the only future for the continuation of most dogs. pure and cross.
  2. might be an idea to read this. http://ankc.org.au/media/6598/a-forensic-view-of-puppy-breeding-in-australiav4.pdf thanks to the idea no responsible , ethical ankc member will breed to produce other than to replace for their own kennel Let alone, shock, horror disgust, ever breed so someone can buy a pet or ask a reasonable price to cover costs, YOUR TIME... who other idiots are expected to give of their time and expenses and not be paid for it? Who else works their butt off and says, no dont pay me. Im ethical. Not the stupid "ethical" responsible ankc, dog breeder with their cloak of piety wrapped around them. since when should only the independently wealthy be permitted to breed purebred dogs? Ah yes the new age of imploding gene pool. Pensioners used to be the bulk of long term members. probably still are but now they daren't breed enough puppies to give a decent amount of pin money to supplement their pension or risk being targeted as puppy farmers today ... these figures are the result. its called self elimination of the pure bred dog. if breeders do not breed to avoid being branded puppy farmers where on earth do you expect to find a pup? there are over 24 MILLION australians. Frankly 99.9% who want a pet will never find it at an ANKC member... there are not enough left. let alone enough pups born anymore. bit of reality check might stop the extinction of pure bred dogs, but its not looking like that is going to happen any time soon reality and common sense went out the window when AR started teaching the precious that being "ethical" and responsible is the new words for stupid self destruction. Now unless your a dead end kennel and proud of it, your liable to be targeted for elimination how long before anyone wakes up? its almost too late already
  3. The fact accountability isn't even mentioned. Think the suspicion its going to mean even more micromanagement n less accountability. Barring a miracle
  4. somehow if that is the case, I expect they will NOT "go back to being a preventative charity" without kicking and screaming all the way.
  5. ?? Well that was a total fizzle no ombudsman to investigate abuses of power. although does this no 13, mean they can no longer do their own prosecutions? If so wonderful, although have to see that to believe it .... Recommendation 13 That the NSW Government establish and fully fund a specialist unit within the NSW Police Force to investigate and prosecute animal cruelty offences. bit confused about what this means? Recommendation 14 That the NSW Government establish an independent statutory body, the Independent Office of Animal Protection, to oversight the animal welfare framework. Further, that the NSW Government consult stakeholders on the appropriate functions of the new body
  6. and sadly mri clear parents do not guarantee mri clear babies as a friend discovered. wish both could be cleared from these lovely dogs. I used to breed them but the stress once I bred my first affected pup and the reality that is a minefield with few tools to work with to identify those who carry either conditions , was too much to deal with
  7. https://www.change.org/p/the-kennel-club-stop-registerin-g-cavalier-king-charles-spaniel-puppies-unless-their-parents-are-mri-scanned-and-heart-tested?recruiter=789910933&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&recruited_by_id=97342230-9ecd-11e7-9a62-eb205c5da526&utm_content=fht-2222214-en-gb%3Av2 on paper sounds a great idea. except there is one very big BUT! They are wrong. no one wants to breed a dog that will develop these..............There is a catch. The MRI is only valid for when it was done, it can change. Ditto for heart testing.. Can be MVD clear this month and next year and the next. equally can be showing signs of MVD developing a month later. its very very difficult. Many are clear for their breeding lives but it kicks in at 6 or 7. best case is Jack. he was clear all his life and lived to 16...His sons and daughters averaged 14 years, but as they were bred to other lines their puppies lives got shorter and shorter......The last two developed MVD at 7, one dying two month later, her half sister now 8 although on medication though.............. as I see it the only chance to actually breed for longer sound lives is not use any male under 8 years. Take plenty of frozen semen and dont use it until hes proven by living 11 years or more free of both conditions. THAT is the only way to breed it out sadly. For both the boys and the girls will be past breeding age before you know who will or will not be free of either or both... sadly That is the reality Although if we are really serious then it can be done, by only using frozen semen from males that have passed the parameters I explained Cant do it for the bitches or end of the breed. BUT by using generations of proven clear long lived males should only take three or four generations... six ideally.............12 if you want a geneticist happy. I do know this is what it takes. decades ago discovered a lethal gene in my show stock, my best friends brother is a geneticist... laid me down a plan to eliminate it by only using proven clear males. same scene with the girls would be too old to breed if they were kept until proven clear. in my case it only took six generations to never come up with a carrier male............ but Glen said 12 is the ideal. This is how the old time breeders isolated and eliminated in the hundreds of years before dna tests......in the case of MVD and Syringamyelia there is no DNA test... They are relying on MRI's to show if the condition is developing in the skull.........In the case of MVD... heart checks until dog either dies of old age or the valves start to leak. whichever occur's first. There is a way... BUT its going to take a lot of planning and cooperation between ALL who love the breed. These days anyone who decided to try it and kept the couple of hundred dogs that it would require would be hounded out of the registry as a puppy farmer anyway.. no chance of the large kennels which once existed and created or continued so many breeds in the past. Id love to give it a try, but too old now Good luck folks As Glen told me, There's your blueprint. keep to it and you will succeed.
  8. Checking gumtree and trading post x breds are from 2,500 to 5,000 even the same crosses. Never understood why purebred breeders have been extorted to not ask prices to reflect the cost of breeding the pup let alone some to cover the hours spent, so many I have met seem to feel if you cannot afford to sell your pups for less than it cost to breed them then you should not be breeding? Accusing any who do of being puppy farmers and not fit to remain members. Had an interesting conversation with a lady whose old dog has just died and looking for a replacement puppy, for obvious reasons (just look at how few ankc breeds are even available on the dogzonline listings) there are none of her breed available although some are on the trading post and gumtree from unregistered breeders. She said no way will I be buying my pup from a puppy farmer, I don’t want my puppy coming from one of those dreadful kennels with that awful housing the rscpa are putting up the photos of. Think from memory last year there were three raids with such photos. Yet this lady is assuming anyone not an ankc member is a puppy farm like she saw the photos of, which is lucky for ankc breeders I admit. went back through the press releases on the "in the news " section and all three were photos taken at an ankc member so the good side is jo public are not twigging where they came from. My other thought was although there was once over 60,000 members the stats for 2019 was 31,961.so much hatred for three that made the headlines. Yet over 60 women a year are killed in domestic violence cases and the silence to restructure laws to protect them or at the very least alternative housing and safety options increased to protect them is totally inadequate compared to the tens of millions donated to protect pets? Some police have even been caught handing their mate the address to find her even though there are domestic violence orders against him? Cannot help but wonder, do so many really think these dead women deserved to die that way? Anyway, back to our dogs. Thanks to the push to make it hard to register a prefix membership has halved in the past 20 years while the Australian population has gone from 17,993,074 million in 1995 to 25,203,198 million in 2019. (perhaps I should add the constant harassment to drive members to resign, by many self appointed fellow members who feel they are more "ethical an responsible" than the member they decide to target for elimination, Not even being a breed club member and show secretary working their butt off for their breed is exempt from persecution, from what I've personally seen) as for anyone who breeds more than two or three litters a year is likely to become a target, let alone more. Compared to purebred puppies bred in the same period. E.g. 54,590 in 1995 to 31,961 in 1991. Almost half the number of puppies bred, has plummeted from 81,389 in 1995 to 69,335 in 2018. no figure listed for 2019. a drop of 1,197 from 2017 and a drop of 675 from 2016. Then add this so telling set of statistics and why is the ANKC self destructing? http://ankc.org.au/media/6598/a-forensic-view-of-puppy-breeding-in-australiav4.pdf All the ANKC statistics are freely available on their own site. So why, why is the persecution of pure bred members continuing even though so few are to be found that are not doing the right thing..? Making it harder for new members to get a prefix is not getting rid of potential puppy farmers it is sending the majority to join up with the far more welcoming plethora of alternative pet registers instead, humans are a weird mob, aussies included. The ANKC did a survey many decades ago and discovered some 60% of new members had not renewed by years 3 to 5... some 80% had not renewed by years 10 to 15.........leaving a very small cadre of long time members. Yet still decided to forgo the income and the puppies bred by these short term members. The majority dropping out due to what all we old timers know, its hard work and heart breaking when things go wrong. Why hand them on a platter to the pet registers instead? Hugging yourselves, congratulating each other these softies would have been puppy farmers anyway does not make sense, either for the gene pool for the breeds continually being lost or the need to continually tighten financial belts due to decreasing income from membership and registration fees has certainly happened and continues... Is anyone learning lessons? or is the need to feel special and rare more important then the future of the breeds we are saying we love? The breeders of old must be rolling in their graves,,, none of them believed the height of excellence was being a dead end breeder, (limit register all but those you keep) they worked to preserve their breeds not eliminate most of the available gene pool? Fortunately for the people of Australia who love their pets, the puppy farms are starting up in droves to fill the void . I have noticed the RSPCA is gladly supplying them ‘RSPCA APPROVED” signs after paying the fees.
  9. only repeated what I was told, its tragic anyone should be pushed to that, daughter did work experience with a few vets as she had indended doing vet science... was shocked at how stressful the job is so did medical science instead, wasn't the pets that were the problem, it is the owners
  10. and to be an "ethical" breeder your supposed to sell your puppies for less than it cost to raise them. BUT................ it is not the people wanting a puppy saying that. It is fellow ANKC members who can afford to sell their puppies for less than it cost to raise them. Friend is a vet and he too says so many of his friends have ended it because of the stress. Green dream being the one of choice
  11. Cant remember the first year but 15 years later a young locum gave my puppies full dose protech c3 despite what I did ask for. three were dead before I was back home and the last pup died shortly after. his excuse to his boss was if the pups could not tolerate the recommended dose they were better culled from the breed. He was fired, but that didn't bring back any of the lost puppies and they were their mums last litter. all her previous pups had been male. so end of her maternal line thanks to an incredibly egotistical ignorant prat I asked him what would he do to all the murry grey cattle and the dog breeds susceptible to ivermectin? his reply. He would dose them all and then only continue the breeds with the survivors... would save having to dna test but I well remember before it was known ivermectin could kill susceptible animals , one farmer woke to find over half their murray greys had died overnight. very expensive cull But then it would not have been that vets loss. not even his boss who fired him offered me back the money I was charged for the injections that killed my puppies. I did not take them to be euthanised
  12. all mine that died were vaccinated with protech c3. when I rang and asked what was going on, never lost any before, the reply was new improved formula. so now I check with the vet first and refuse to let them use any but canvac c3
  13. Dreadful isnt it. yes its not really new now, but it began about 17 years ago on a big scale. one of my puppies owners rang me and wanted me to pay for her puppys op, she was only 7 months old when her vet said both needed to be done. both parents were perfect as was the pup at ten weeks... my vet hit the roof when I contacted him. his words were , "the bastard must have needed the money for his new car! There was nothing wrong with that pup." but the deed was done and think he slugged her over $1,700 Cant remember now if it was for each leg, or both now, too long ago. my vet rang her and told her exactly what he thought of someone who didnt even have the good manners to contact the vet who had examined her as a puppy. Let alone only contact the breeder after having the op done with no chance of a second opinion. She was far from happy when he told her in his opinion there was nothing wrong with the pup when he examined her and to operated on any pup under 18 months was criminal and had told me not to pay a cent.
  14. As my vet said, if a dog is a pet the majority of dogs with luxating patella do not need operating on. Today's vets see it as the new money spinner I have seen dogs that were Australian champions with luxating patella and not even the judges realised it, there are so many grades of it. two dogs I knew with it were so wobbly in the back legs they looked ridiculous but their vets agreed there was no need for the op, the op itself cuts away the cartlidge to deepen the groove and what does that do? once done halves the time before there is bone exposed and arthritis begin. both the wobblies never developed arthritis and one lived to 18 the other to 21. owned by different families. the Australian champion had figured hers out, when it locked, she would stretch her leg back until it clicked back into place itself and off she continued... she looked like every now and then she liked to do a leg stretch. I was looking after her for her owner and took her to my vet worried there was something weird wrong with her. he was very impressed with her solution, lived till 17 and still sound in her legs with no pain. if she had been operated on she would have been arthritic well before old age caught up with her
  15. I found it hilarious the rspca stood up for her saying , as I have highlighted in red. Yet, ANKC members have been told for over 20 years now to be "ethical and responsible" they should "LIFETIME guarantee" their puppies. I have said from day one when my friends began spouting that.... HOW can you lifetime guarantee a pup when you cannot lifetime guarantee your own child? Are you nuts? You have a child you take a risk and have to accept the good and the bad. All any breeder can do is ensure the parents are as sound as possible............. Most human parents dont even know if they carry a genetic fault, let alone test to find out before they have a child. Animal Rights began the campaign and ankc breeders for some weird reason grabbed it as their banner to distance themselves from the dreaded puppy farmer.......... As I spotted when I read the NSW POCTA that all breeders now must comply with. It is the blue print for a puppy farm, so, far as our state politicians believe, EVERYONE is a puppy farmer, so your biting your own tail folks. I never thought the day would dawn again that i would agree with anything an rspca representative said but its happened? Astonished. Although they have been selling rescues with all manner of issues with no responsibility for the costs involved in vet care for the new owners, now its in print their reason why. RSPCA says DVK is compliant RSPCA Queensland solicitor and prosecutions officer Tracey Jackson confirmed they had recently investigated DVK over concerns raised by the public. Ms Jackson said inspectors had found no evidence of offences under the Animal Care and Protection Act, or the RSPCA's Breeder's Standards. "Advice and education was provided to the owner of the facility and she immediately implemented measures to ensure ongoing compliance with the standards," Ms Jackson said. "This included ensuring veterinary checks of her animals to identify any of these heritable conditions, even if they were not obvious, prior to using them for breeding." Ms Howlett says she doesn't claim to offer guarantees.(ABC News: Stephanie Zillman) Ms Jackson said it was extremely difficult for breeders to be able to tell if a dog necessarily had a "heritable condition", which included hip and elbow dysplasia, heart murmurs and luxating patellae. "What is difficult for people to understand is that while the Breeder's Standards prohibit breeders using dogs with these conditions for breeding, they do not prohibit the sale of puppies that have these conditions – or that ultimately exhibit these conditions," Ms Jackson said. "This is primarily because these conditions are not usually obvious or easily detectable or diagnosable at a young age." The RSPCA encouraged people who were purchasing puppies to do their research about the breed, speak to their vet, and speak with breeders before making decisions about their purchases. "There are no lifetime guarantees with puppies, and even puppies bred by breeders in full compliance with the laws, could end up with some of these conditions, or other health issues," Ms Jackson said.
  16. also interesting, and helpful "Swelling of the muzzle and around the face, neck, or eyes" how Monique's girl got her name, 'fat face' https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/what-to-expect-after-your-pets-vaccination/
  17. so true, but perhaps they see it as naturally culling the weak minded from the population? Yet, we are locked down to prevent what? Deaths from corona? surely a good culling is whats needed anyway? or is only people who love their animals that are considered needing to be culled?
  18. My vet told me this over 20 years ago. yet we still get yearly reminders to re-vaccinate? as well the dose is one ml for all, from great dane to chihuahua and for a six week old chihuahua and so many small breeds its a sentence of death. Try asking a vet to scale down the amount and 99% refuse on the grounds they "have to dose as recommended".... they dont offer to replace or recompense for the then dead puppy/puppies though. https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/why-vets-are-getting-away-with-murder/?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=socialnetwork&fbclid=IwAR1pKhcxVwByhtE_6FlcpeyBRdtuMO245ruygwuU21J2KT7J0QqpQzfyR_o
  19. well Barbra Streisand solved her problem, she had her favourite dog cloned, think she has three now? found it https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/02/style/barbra-streisand-cloned-her-dog.html
  20. Dogs are wonderful companions. the reason so many now are being recognised as "service dogs". except its not a "new thing" as many might think. its no accident that surveys have consistently found people with pets live longer, happier and less stressed. Which is what you too have discovered. Actually for her breed mix she has done very well.. sadly so many of us fervently wish our pets lived much longer. She is not a breed, she is what is called a crossbred. it was the garden knome that I believe decided to rebrand x breds as "designer breeds" in the cattle world, the cross of two different breeds, usually results in the progeny being bigger and tend to fatten faster, than either breed of parent because of "hybrid vigour".... the catch is if you keep the progeny they have to be crossed to another unrelated breed or it fails in the next generation. in dogs, crossing two different pure breeds has been touted for decades now as creating "hybrid vigor" too. the problem is if both breeds carry the same genetic defect then so will the puppies.... so crossing two different breeds that both carry for example, luxating patella, mitral valve, pra, pll. and sorry forget all the others that can be in both, if the parents have not been dna tested..........which does not usually happen if they are intended to produce cross bred puppies. Also there are many defects that there is no dna tests for yet. as recently pointed out there are over 20,000 possibilities compared to, is it less or more than 100 available to date? The problem in dogs, is all are Canis familiaris. With cattle there are two very unrelated lines that can be crossed with far greater hybrid vigour than can ever be achieved with dogs. Bos Indicus – Tropical breeds Bos Indicus cattle are developed from lines of the Indian Zebu, most commonly known as Brahman. Cattle with Bos Indicus bloodlines can be distinguished by a hump on their back. They also have large ears and dewlap (the saggy skin in front of their chest), which help to keep them cool. Bos Indicus cattle are better suited to walking long distances for water and foraging. Tropical breeds are tick resistant and well-suited to the extremes in temperature of Northern Australia. and Bos taurus can be classified into two sub-categories, British breeds and Continental breeds. Continental breeds, also called Exotics, are breeds that originated in Europe. These cattle are known for weight gain and cutability. Bos Taurus breeds are derived from British and European stock, and they are best suited to the cooler regions of Southern Australia. Arguably, the best known Bos Taurus breed is Angus, which originates from Scotland. Bos Taurus cattle have thicker coats which allow them to weather cooler winters, and they do not have the notable ‘hump’ of their bos indicus relatives. There are approximately 100 Bos Taurus breeds in Australia,
  21. sounds like mitral valve, nothing to do with smoke, drugs or anything not inherited, a cavalier trait seems to be almost a breed trait from how many I am hearing have it. There was a breed book at one pet shop I read that said the average life span was 7 years... it did not state why, but that's about the age most die of it. pretty sad considering most toy breeds live well into their teens.
  22. So many adds for RARE BLUES. or lately the newest must have seems to be Blue Merle. there's nothing rare about Blue or Merle coloured dogs. its in many breeds, both pure and X bred. way too little information about the dangers of letting two merles be mated together..(some merles do not show they are carrying it), Just like some horses can carry the overo gene without expressing, but bred to another overo and 25% chance of the foal inheriting two from both parents and you have a lethal white and you can do nothing but watch it die or have it put down to save it suffering. In the case of merle,. the resulting 25% with two merle genes can have a sliding scale of defects to varying degrees right down to born with no eyes at all. At least mating two mexican hairless just means 25% less puppies as all who inherit two patterns never survive to birth. Another inherited defect not much talked about. Is low immune system, regardless of the colour of the pup or adult.. it expresses down the track as Demodectic mange. Its amazing how often some vets fail to diagnose this as the cause of the problem.... but either way, this too is a genetic failing and nothing to do with the actual colour of the dog.... .... Knew a beautiful cavalier which developed it after his second vaccination........vet hoped it may correct as he matured but gradually became even worse after his third vaccination. as he was intended as a stud dog , the breeder was contacted... Amazingly his breeder said this was proof of his fine bloodline? Low immune system a sign of good breeding? You have to be kidding.. .... no wonder so many kennels are known for dog after dog presenting with severe itch. One vet said he could name the breeder without asking who, depending on the condition the dog was suffering from. Decades ago he wanted to create a data base of conditions linked to pups from the breeder........ I thought it was a great idea, breeders would be alerted to what lines carry a problem they would otherwise not be aware of if the puppy buyer did not contact them. but he said the AVA refused, saying the information is confidential and could expose the AVA to litigation by the breeders if they were named... He believed it would help the breeder to know which parents carried a problem. But then if intending purchasers could know before hand which conditions they may have to deal with if they buy a pup from that kennel was probably the sticking point the AVA was worried about. the good news with the cavalier boy, was put on low dose ivermectin, he lived demodectic free for the rest of his life. (although there was an expensive hiccup when rehomed) Although he was desexed to make sure he could not contribute to more puppies with the same problem... given to a relative, along with his medicine... when it ran out they didn't call and get more. so within months his skin went red and glowing hot so they took him to the vet.. their vet did not believe he needed the low dose ivermectin his previous vet had prescribed, so did every test available "just to make sure" Man were they furious? they were slugged $2500 for the testing?. no idea what on earth their vet tested him for. some one made a motza from an already diagnosed condition?. Any one want to contribute to other things a buyer might need to know when looking for their next pet?
  23. its not just dogs, ex told me he would kill me, but that's not considered serious, until he actually does it, why so many have avo's but still terminated. the targets have no rights to protection from either aggressive humans or in that case dogs
  24. trouble is dogs are not fur kids, they have pack attack instincts that kick in when in numbers. one can be fine but the change when a pack is major. love my dogs but know to make sure they cannot roam....EVER come to think of it some kids, human kids are just as capable of horrific acts... dont think I need to remind u of the specifics, so calling them fur kids isn't always referring to the warm and fuzzies as for the aggressive when you just walking or getting your mail as someone said.. accident/POSSIBLE disaster, waiting to happen. its about time they stopped the no action until your bitten.
  25. posted on ANKC Pedigree Dog Community. good advice. Admin · 21 March at 23:11 Because we are an island nation, we are a lucky country. Even today, no matter what mistakes have been made by our Federal and State governments to date (and there have been mistakes), we (as individuals and as citizens) of this country can still make a difference. We can still change our fate if we act now. I am pleading to every Australian. Be responsible. It is up to us - each and every one of you to do the right thing. If you love your country, if you care about your family, your friends and your community (and even if you don’t), unless you have to go out, stay home. Unless it is essential that you travel, for once, stay home. Stop whinging about being bored or your freedom to move around. Watch movies, read a book, and most importantly, look up at our beautiful sky today and our Southern Cross this evening and think how incredibly lucky we are. If you have been lucky enough to return to Australia, this is a privilege. Isolate yourselves. I am disgusted and horrified by those who have not respected this. I am shocked by those of our population who are not taking this seriously. Those pictured dancing in the mall in our CBD or at Bondi Beach. What is wrong with you all? Just look at what is happening elsewhere. Which part of – “we have to choose who to save do you not understand”? Italy lost over 700 people in one day! Our country does not have the resources (medical and otherwise) to handle this. Do what you can to support our doctors and medical people who are putting their lives on the line and help buy time. Australia can still be an outlier. Our borders are closing and we are naturally isolated. Most of us are big on personal space and actually pretty good at social distancing. Let us be different. Each day is critical. Do whatever is in your power to break the infection cycle and flatten the curve. Stop hoarding toilet paper and whatever is next. Think about what really matters. Step up Australia and look after your mates. It is up to each and every one of you. We can actually change the course of fate. Our lives and our economy are dependent upon you. Even today, there is still time to change the course of fate. It is not too late. Each and every one of you consider – what can you do? As a nation, we are not good at doing what we are told (myself included). However, just for once, all of you use the brain you were blessed with. We have been forewarned and have more than enough evidence. Help our government contain this. Stay home unless you have to and persuade your family, friends and neighbours to do likewise. Unless you do, with every passing day, the situation will get worse. It is denial and complacency, that is the biggest problem. Stay home until we are forced to do so. And ... cuddle your dog instead. Sandy , thanks Elisa, to my surprise the endurance forum admin shut down discussion.......all our pets will be loving the extra attention. well not necessarily some cats
