  1. Hmm this is the question?????????? You can put two 0.0 parents togther and get high hips..........you can get low hips.........or you can get a combination of anything.......you can put together two higher scoring hips and get low hips.........or you can get high hips ........or a combination of anything. Does the sire have prior history on the status of what his pups are scoring hip wise?? The other thing I like to look at is the siblings of said parents and the siblings of the grandparents and their scores, it is called a vertical pedigree and it gives you a better picture of possible hip status within the family. I am not sure what the Labrador stats are, no doubt somebody can post further information.
  2. No there is no open health registry in this country for Rottweilers. We (NRCA) only record HD, ED Eye and Mouth. Heart checks is not compulsory at this stage, I really don't know if they ever will be here. I personally think they should be and certification should be done at least a basic like the OFA (Orthopaedic Foundation for Animals) offers.
  3. This would concern me greatly and to answer your question, no I wouldn't continue on like there is no issue. SAS is an extremely serious health issue for any breeder and one IMO that should be of a priority to make sure it doesn't happen again. I shake my head that a "breeder" would continue to go on and repeat a breeding knowing it has produced a pup that has a diagnosed SAS condition. I would be testing all pups in that litter to be finding out answers. But saying that, I do take health issues extremely seriously. I do not think that ignorance is an excuse, and in this case it seems education is not being considered either. Maybe my ethics and morals are to high?? I really don't think so, the ONLY reason to breed is to improve, breeding knowing that SAS has been produced is not breeding to the betterment of the breed, it is to the detriment, but hey that is my opinion.
  4. Interesting to read the differences in prices. Some are just well We are in Nillumbik and are yet to receive the renewals for the dogs..........I must say that I am a little worried now that they may have gone up considerably. Mind you they are very slack at getting them out and letting people have say 28 days notice yet expect you to have them paid on time! ETA; Carluke is there any explanation as to why the fee has doubled? I have always begrudged having to pay a fee for rego on the dogs as well as a permit fee for them (I think it is a form of double dipping). I just don't get councils and charges. I really do understand why some people do not register their dogs.
  5. Yes thank you for posting the link for the pics, it is so very good to see them all. Congratulations to all for getting the invite...... Huge congratulations to the winner, a most handsome boy! ;) :D
  6. As above, if you can, give it in the morning unless you have a twice a day schedule - If so then try and give it early evening unless you wish to be woken up to let your dog outside (assuming your dog does sleep inside). ETA; make sure there is plenty of fresh water available.
  7. Oh my, that is a fat pregnant belly.............what will she look like when she is closer to term! Best of luck.
  8. Congratulations on the expected large litter!
  9. Do I think it is hereditary, yes I do. Some girls need help to learn / understand things and are in shock to start with. Some that aren't that good first up are so much better the next time. Some who aren't good first up will be the same next time. I had a bitch who with her first litter was terrible at the job. After about 2 weeks she finally clicked on and did her job very well and fed / cleaned puppies up until they left. Her next litter she excelled as a mother from birth all the way through. Her line had great mothers in it and I hoped that her second litter was not to be a repeat of her first, it wasn't and I was very relieved at not having to feed and toilet the pups myself. Other bitches I have had were born to be mums, these girls are super mums and worth their weight in gold and came from a great mothering line. I think it is important to know the bitch line and the mothering skills in that line. Not always easy to do but I think if you wish to breed on than to me that is very important that the line be from known free whelpers and great mothers. ETA; Saying the above, life is not always black and white. I have known some daughters of great mothers to not be good mums at all and some from not good mothers to be great. Sometimes things don't always go to plan. Mother nature is very unpredictable.
  10. This set up works for us as well. The boys are much calmer and happier if they are next to "the" girl. Although having two males can be a pain as they compete for the pretty girl, but it can be managed. We have two males and four females, all are entire. We have dog runs and multiple crates throughout the house and in the "dog room". Managing them all becomes second nature after a while and you do get use to it. The only problem that we may have is when we have one of our dogs that we bred come back for a stay and that happens to coincide when a girl/s is in season and that may upset the routine but we still manage it. Having a dog and bitch only is easy to manage with a couple of crates and again easier with a dog run. If you are renting a portable dog run is must as well as being useful for containing dogs whilst needing to do things in the yard. I have friends who have two bitches and a dog, they send the dog to the boarding kennel whilst the girls are in, it works for them and gives them peace of mind that no accidents happen while they are at work.
  11. Good luck for the surgery and for Ruby coming out of it well.
  12. I am very sorry for your loss. Thinking of you and your family in this sad time. My your Grandad rest in peace.
  13. You could possibly use a whelping heat pad. The deluxe one has a variation on heat settings and are designed to be on for very long periods of time and have weight on them as they are also recommended for old dogs and or those recovering from surgery. A lot of good doggy stores carry them and I have also seen them in some of the larger pet stores. Not sure of the brand but the one I refer to is usually red in colour and has a chew proof cord on it.
  14. Most health food stores will stock it or if they don't they will order it in for you. Another great product that has many uses.
  15. I agree that an immune system that is under attack will show up as many things including eye goop. Eyes can be cleaned / flushed and treated with some colloidal silver. You can also give this to your dog as a maintenance thing as well.......a large dog 40kg about a tablespoon a day in their meal. I personally believe a lot of health problems are contributed to by diet and environment, I am not fan of dry foods as a complete food and choose to feed our guys on a BARF diet, we now have four generations of BARF fed dogs and their health is great! We have very few if any Vet bills now and I believe it due to mostly a healthy / natural diet. Another great tonic / immune booster is Apple Cider Vinegar, but make sure it is the cloudy one not the highly filtered one.
  16. As usual, your crew are very entertaining. :D Thank you for sharing!
  17. A great way to see many of the breed you want in one place. I suggest that you purchase a catalogue so that you can get the dogs names and owners / breeders of the dogs you like the look of. It is a great way to start your search for a dog by attending shows and seeing many of the breed you are after. BTW what a great dog!
  18. Whippets I was thinking the same thing, I will have to check with them as last time I was there they only made the wood based ones. Does anybody have a link for the fibreglass ones???
  19. RL what an awful thing to have happen. However you did everything right to contain your dogs on your property. Sadly your next door neighbours did not contain their puppy on their property and now they have had huge vet bill. And that is a massive Vet bill, What do some of these vets charge for shares in the surgery....... . I would NOT contribute towards the neighbours Vet bill, it is not your fault. If you feel you need to do something then as suggested buy the puppy a small hamper of toys / treats and maybe a wine hamper for the neighbours. This is not your fault and you are not to blame for your neighbours failure to keep their puppy safe. ETA: We have had a similar situation happen before. Our dogs were on our property, next door neighbours dog got under the fence. A couple of our guys caught the dog (SWF), severely slobbered on, nothing more. I got hold of the dog and returned it to neighbours and explained the situation. Neighbour started going on about if it needs vet care I will be held responsible. Neighbour was informed by myself, it is your dog and your and responsibility to keep it contained on your property as the law requires you to do. Never heard another thing and the small hole under the fence was quickly filled in.
  20. Congratulations to all that did well over the weekend.
  21. Congratulations to all the connections
  22. Travelling whilst feeding a BARF diet can be done without to much effort. When we travel to and from shows we feed chicken frames or similar from the Supermarket Deli, cans of sardines and other raw meaty bones (lamb / beef). This will be fine for many days if needed. If you have access to a fridge / freezer it is even better than having to purchase RMB's each day. Also if you have access to a fridge freezer we take already premade BARF patties packed in an esky and transfered to a fridge on arrival. These are to expensive for us to feed on a regular basis (we make up our own mix) but these are very handy when travelling with your dogs. I use to take everything but it is not really worth the extra effort (a lot was wasted), just take what you need for the travelling part and get what you need when you get to your destination. There are always Supermarkets open or butchers about. Also as suggested 4Legs is another option when travelling and we have used this when needed or even as a treat when on the road.
