Sorry if this is in the wrong section but wasnt sure where it should go.Im in the belief that this mix is a mongrel. If this is correct then why are people selling them at such prices like $400-500 then? This has come to me becos I acquired a 'freebie' maltese/shitzu here and the lady advirtised her as purebred and well I told her that was a load of hogwash! She got rid of him cos she was moving.I think she should have got rid of her little snot nosed kids cos he is a brilliant little dude & he has now gone on to a lovely lady who will adore him, that is my dear old mum.

A cross breed is a dog that is bred by crossing 2 pure breeds together.

A mongrel is a dog who's parents are both either cross breeds themselves and/or of many different breeds.

A Maltese x Shih Tzu is a cross breed dog, not a mongrel....provided that either parent was a pure breed of each.

Multi-shits are dime-a-dozen in rescue and pounds.

Many of them are great little dogs, some have serious health and attitude issues - usually because they've been a popular pet-shop/puppy farm 'product' bought by people with no idea about dogs who dump the pups when they're not cute anymore, and haven't magically toilet and obedience trained themselves.

*disclaimer - I fostered one for a long time, and it took a long time because so many unsuitable people rang looking for a cute perfect dog. I'm making generalisations based on one tough little dog (but also lots of stories told to me by other people who'd had a similar SWF pup).

Mongrel through and through, and are horrible usually when mixed together

Please see my post number 39 which is..

Sorry yes, my terminology was incorrect, it is infact a crossbreed. When I said they are horrible, I know alot that are snappy and unsocial.

I grew up with Shih Tzu, and love their temperaments.

I must admit that I would have to disagree with you there using the ones we see here in Albury as an example. Can't comment on their health or genetic stuff but purely on temperament the vast majority of Shitty Malts we see here have beautiful temperaments with people and kids. They can be a little dodgy with other dogs but that is all down to socialisation IMO.

I don't support the breeding of this mix BUT definitely wouldn't call them horrible in terms of temperament.

I have always been in the belief that a purebred is one that has both parents of the same breed, that is maltese x maltese etc.The pups produced from that are then purebred?

Tdierikx-Well I dare say the pet shops would sell them at at more higher price here.

Katdogs- Gotta love the name Multi-shits.Yes I can see the problem with people wanting the cute, fluffy adorable little dogs & then dumping them after that.I think its like that with all types of dogs(esp pups) though. But this sort of dog esp,cos I rung another advirtiser and this is what she played on with her 2 litters she had up for sale.

I can't agree with you here. I've fostered a few and had a lot to do with them generally and found them to be very nice little dogs actually.

And just for the record - I have a strong preference for foxy type dogs but I've learned to appreciate what nice little dogs some malt crosses can be and how much easier they often are than foxy types to foster!

Whatever the crossbreed (designer dog for f---wits who have nothing better to spend their money on), I want to see petshops and backyard breeders all stopped in their tracks - VERY SOON.

Far too much death and irresponsible pet owners and they are largely responsible.

It's probably the most common mix of dogs that I groom. I have heaps on my clients list, and for the most part they are nice little dogs. Of course, in my biased opinion that is the Shih Tzu coming through, if they ever snap then I blame that on the Maltese parentage

Yes correct. Sorry must have confused you....

A purebreed dog has 2 pure breed parents of the SAME BREED ie. PB Maltese + PB Maltese = Purebreed Maltese

A cross breed dog has purebreed parents of DIFFERENT BREEDS ie. PB Maltese + PB Shih Tzu = Maltese x Shih Tzu

A mongrel has mixed breed parents ie. Maltese/Shih Tzu + Maltese/JRT (or any other breed, wheter distinguishable or not) = Mongrel

Hope that makes sense.

Hi CNR,

I must stand up for this little guy cos in the few weeks I have had him until mum took him home he has been nothing but gorgeous. He got on well with both my dogs, esp one that is a cranky ol girl and I loved him to bits myself.I think if you have met horrible ones then maybe it could be a part of the owners input into their behaviour. Please dont blame it on the dog.

Here, here Dogmad,I agree with you on this.I had a friend here who purchased a kelpie x lab I think it was and she paid something like $600... I told her off fair n square with that one.

I was recently given a maltese shih tzu as I'm a softie and didn't want to see the little guy go to the pound, although I'm not overly fond of this breed as I've found them to be yappy he is actually a nice mannered little dog, is actually better behaved than Lady  He is an angel to brush and clip and happily let me clip his toe nails, his only bad trait is barking at everything he sees outside even neighbor when he's outside which drives me crazy but he probably thinks he's being a good watch dog but would actually roll over for a tummy rub if anyone did come in.

Naww cute. May they have a long and happy life together.

Yep mongrel, mutt, crossbreed. Doesnt matter what she calls him as long as they're happy together.

Sorry but I really had a good laugh at this explaination. So do you sight pedigree papers for the parents before you class a dog as a cross breed as apposed to a mongrel? Sorry but a cross breed is a cross breed is a cross breed. Whether you call it a mongrel a mutt or a cross breed, they are still dogs with more than one breed in their mix.
